Palm Desert adopted its pioneering Golf Palm-Night Cart Transportation Program more than by Linda Kottke two decades ago, giving residents the freedom to use their golf carts as a convenient and environmentally friendly way to get around town. Some golf cart drivers, however, are unaware of the guidelines for their use, and could be placing themselves and others at risk. Golf cart drivers must have a valid Palm Springs with Red Car by Moira driver’s license and observe the same rules of the road as automobiles. The valid driver’s license Johannessen requirement means that golf cart drivers must be at least 16 years old. Underage drivers can pose a serious safety risk to the public and to themselves. Overcrowded carts that contain too many occupants is another common and dangerous violation. If there are only two seats in the golf cart, there should only be two people in it. Golf carts with valid City permits are the only carts that are allowed to use the designated golf cart routes, lanes, and paths that crisscross the community. To be permitted, golf carts must be electrically powered, conform to industry standards for manufactured golf carts, and provide an unobstructed view to the rear from the driver’s seat. They must also be equipped with many of the same safety features as cars and other passenger vehicles, including seat belts for all occupants, turn signals, side and rearview mirrors, as well as head, tail, and brake lights. To obtain a City permit, the golf cart must first be inspected by a Palm Desert code The Winning Ball by John Ressler enforcement officer to confirm that the cart meets the requirements. A $10 permit can only be purchased after the cart passes inspection. Permits are valid for two years and can be purchased from the Business License counter at City Hall, 73510 Fred Waring Drive.
