  • The Black Tent
The Black Tent (1956) and Bengazi (1955): The Image of Arabs in Two Post-Empire Journeys into the Deserts of Libya Richard Andrew Voeltz [email protected] Cameron University Volume 7.1 (2018) | ISSN 2158-8724 (online) | DOI 10.5195/cinej.2018.200 | http://cinej.pitt.edu Abstract These two little known films are both part of the cycle of post-imperial films dealing with the decline of the British Empire. They are perhaps the only films set in or near the historical period of the British Military Administration of Libya after 1945. The Black Tent frequently gets lumped in with the genre of World War II British war films. Bengazi marks the cinematic journey of the actor Victor McLaglen from The Lost Patrol (1934) to Bengazi (1955), his career encapsulating the beginning and end of the Hollywood British Empire film genre. Both films contain redemptive dramatic journeys into the deserts of Libya involving the loss of British imperial male power. The case studies of The Black Tent and Bengazi show the beginnings of new post-empire film genres and new mentalities toward the Arab “Other” that partially promotes a decolonization of western cinema. The Black Tent (1956) and Bengazi (1955): The Image of Arabs in Two Post-Empire Journeys into the Deserts of Libya Richard Andrew Voeltz The Black Tent (1956, British) and Bengazi (1955, American) are perhaps the only feature films set in the last days of the British Military Administration of Libya from 1945 to 1951.

  • Crowdsourcing Memories and Artefacts to Reconstruct Italian Cinema History: Micro- Histories of Small-Town Exhibition in the 1950S
. Volume 16, Issue 1 May 2019 Crowdsourcing memories and artefacts to reconstruct Italian cinema history: Micro- histories of small-town exhibition in the 1950s Daniela Treveri Gennari, Oxford Brookes University, UK Sarah Culhane, Maynooth University, Ireland Abstract: In the mid-1950s, cinema was Italy’s second most important industry (Wagstaff 1995: 97). At its peak, the country’s exhibition circuit boasted some 8,000 cinemas (Quaglietti 1980). Despite the important role that cinema played within the social, cultural and economic fabric of 1950s Italy, we know relatively little about the workings of the distribution and exhibition networks across urban and rural contexts. We know even less about the individuals whose working lives and family businesses depended on the cinema industry. This article uses micro-history case studies to explore some of the broader questions associated with the history of film exhibition and distribution in 1950s Italy. We use both the oral history testimonies collected during the AHRC-funded Italian Cinema Audiences project (www.italiancinemaaudiences.org) and the crowdsourced digital artefacts donated by members of the general public during the creation of CineRicordi (www.cinericordi.it), an online archive that allows users to explore the history of Italian cinema-going. Building on the oral histories gathered for the Italian Cinema Audiences project, this archive integrates the video-interviews of 160 ordinary cinema-goers with public and private archival materials. With this article, we aim to explore the ‘relationship between image, oral narrative, and memory’ (Freund and Thomson 2011: 4), where - as Freund and Thomson describe – ‘words invest photographs with meaning’ (2011: 5).

  • Museum Salutes James Bond and His Creators Critic Judith Crist Moderates Forum
The Museum of Modern Art % 50th Anniversary to MUSEUM SALUTES JAMES BOND AND HIS CREATORS CRITIC JUDITH CRIST MODERATES FORUM In any time capsule of the 20th century, there is sure to be a commentary on and, more than likely, a print of a James Bond movie. So great is the impact of Secret Agent 007, archetypical hero of the second half of this century, that it is estimated one out of three people throughout the world have at one time or another viewed one of his spy thrillers. The most popular Bond film so far, "The Spy Who Loved Me" reportedly has drawn one and a half billion viewers or over one eighth of the earth's population. Given these facts, the Department of Film of The Museum of Modern Art, considers the phenomenon of James Bond noteworthy and is rendering, at an appropriate time concurrent with the premiere of the new James Bond "Moonraker," an homage to the producer, Albert R. Broccoli and his colleagues. Recognizing that each of the Bond films is a collabora tive project, Larry Kardish, Associate Curator in the Department of Film, has included in this tribute Lewis Gilbert, the director, Ken Adam, production designer, and Maurice B inder, title creator and graphics artist. The James Bond program, organized by Mr. Kardish, opens on June 25, with a documentary titled "The Making Of James Bond." It takes the viewer behind the scenes of the production of "The Spy Who Loved Me." Produced by BBC, it consists of four half-hour films: the first deals 11 West 53 Street, New York, N.Y.

  • Unmasking the Devil: Comfort and Closure in Horror Film Special Features
Unmasking the Devil: Comfort and Closure in Horror Film Special Features ZACHARY SHELDON While a viewer or critic may choose to concentrate solely on a film’s narrative as representative of what a film says, some scholars note that the inclusion of the supplementary features that often accompany the home release of a film destabilize conceptions of the text of a film through introducing new information and elements that can impact a film’s reception and interpretation (Owczarski). Though some special features act as mere advertising for a film’s ancillary products or for other film’s or merchandise, most of these supplements provide at least some form of behind-the-scenes look into the production of the film. Craig Hight recognizes the prominent “Making of Documentary” (MOD) subgenre of special feature as being especially poised to “serve as a site for explorations of the full diversity of institutional, social, aesthetic, political, and economic factors that shape the development of cinema as a medium and an art form” (6). Additionally, special features provide the average viewer access to the magic of cinema and the Hollywood elite. The gossip or anecdotes shared in interviews and documentaries in special features provide viewers with an “insider identity,” that seemingly involves them in their favorite films beyond the level of mere spectator (Klinger 68). This phenomenon is particularly interesting in relation to horror films, the success of which is often predicated on a sense of mystery or the unknown pervading the narrative so as to draw out visceral affective responses from the audience. The notion of the special feature, which unpacks and reveals the inner workings of the film set and even the film’s plot, seems contradictory to the enjoyment of what the horror film sets out to do.

Bascomb, PhD ABSTRACT Race, class, and politics in film comedy have been debated in the field of African American culture and aesthetics, with scholars and filmmakers arguing the merits of narrative space without adequately addressing the issue of subversive agency of aesthetic expression by black film comedians. With special attention to the 1980-1989 work of comedian Eddie Murphy, this study will look at the film and television work found in this moment as an incisive cut in traditional Hollywood industry and narrative practices in order to show black comedic agency through aesthetic and cinematic narrative subversion. Through close examination of the film, Beverly Hills Cop (Brest, 1984), this project works to shed new light on the cinematic and standup trickster influences of comedy, and the little recognized existence of the 1980s as a decade that defines a base period for chronicling and inspecting the black aesthetic narrative subversion of American film comedy.
