UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE GROUP C, MATCHDAY 1

AS ROMA v REAL MADRID CF

Just over a year ago we were remarking that AS Roma could hardly make their UEFA Champions League debut in grander style. The opening fixture at the Stadio Olimpico brought together the champions of Europe’s top two footballing countries, basing our appreciation on UEFA’s annual coefficient ranking lists and, to add even more spice to a tasty clash between the two group favourites, the match also brought face to face with the club he coached a few years ago and many of the players who were his pupils at the time. Fate has decreed an almost exact replica of last season’s opening fixture in the Stadio Olimpico and, as we said a year ago, a thrilling match is in prospect.

Curiously, last season’s encounter represented the first European meeting between the two clubs. AS Roma’s ‘nearest miss’ had been in the 1998/99 UEFA Cup, when Club Atlético de Madrid recorded the only win for a Spanish side against the Italian club in Rome. On the other hand, Real Madrid CF had made 17 visits to Italian clubs, playing 11 times in and 4 in Turin. Those 17 visits had produced only one win – and that was a 1-0 victory over Juventus FC almost 40 years earlier. Four games had ended as draws and the other 12 had been defeats. Since a 1-1 draw in Naples 13 seasons ago, Real Madrid had lost all five games in Italy and had scored only one goal until the 2-2 against S.S. Lazio during the 2000/01 campaign. This is Real Madrid’s seventh UEFA Champions League campaign dating back to 1995/96. They have a good record on matchday one with just one defeat, at AFC Ajax in 1995, in six previous opening matches. Real Madrid are unbeaten in their last five opening day matches against Rosenborg BK (4- 1), Internazionale FC (2-0), Olympiakos Piraeus FC (3-3), Sporting Clube (2-2) and last season’s 2-1 victory in Rome. During last season’s opener on 11 September ball-possession was pretty evenly-shared (49-51% in the Spaniards’ favour) but the visitors had 19 goal attempts (9 0n target) compared with 13 (9) for the home team. Luís Figo (50) and (63) put Real Madrid 2-0 up and reduced arrears with a 73rd-minute penalty. Fabio Capello fielded: Pelizzoli; Cafú (Balbo 82), Zago, Samuel, Candela; Assunção (Cassano 61), Emerson, Zebina; Totti; Montella (Lima 46) and Batistuta. The unused subs were Antonioli, , Tomic and Siviglia. ’s line-up was: Casillas; Salgado, Hierro, Karanka, ; Flavio Conceição, Makelele; Figo, Raúl, McManaman; and Guti (Iván Campo 87). On the bench: César, Geremi, Celades, Solari, Savio and Munitis. Portugese international Luis Figo will complete 50 UEFA Champions League appearances if he takes part in this game. Real Madrid CF is easily the most successful club in the history of the UEFA Champions League with three title wins in six competitions and a record number of wins (46); goals (157) and points (105) from 77 games. Real Madrid also have the best win percentage of

Matchday One Rome 17 September 2002 AS ROMA – REAL MADRID CF any club in the competition at 59.7% and average 1.364 points per game – only AFC Ajax has a better points return The Spaniards lost only twice in 17 matches during last season’s success, both away at FC Lokomotiv Moskva (0-2) in the first group phase and then at FC Bayern München (1-2) in the first leg of the quarter-finals. They share the competition record with FC Bayern for winning a group the most times with six wins each. Real has topped their first and second stage groups in each of the last two seasons thus making four successive group successes. AS Roma are starting their second UEFA Champions League campaign. They recorded only three wins in 12 games during last season – two against FC Lokomotiv Moscow in the first stage and then another against FC in the second. The Italians put together a run of ten games without defeat (three wins and seven draws) between the loss at home to Real Madrid and the defeat in at the end of the second group phase, which eliminated them from the competition. AS Roma coach Fabio Capello took charge of 48 first team games in his only season (1996/97) in charge at the Bernabéu, winning 31, drawing 12 and losing five – three of those losses came in his last six matches as coach. None of the above games, however, were in European competition as Real Madrid had failed to qualify in the previous season. Real Madrid CF began with a 25-game unbeaten run before losing to FC Barcelona in a Spanish Cup match at the end of January 1997. They went on to win the league by two points from ’s FC Barcelona and then, under , lifted the UEFA Champions League title the following season. AS Roma, in keeping with the rest of Italian clubs, have had to wait longer than expected before opening up in domestic competition. A dispute over television contracts and revenues meant that the start to the season was delayed and did not kick off until Saturday. And it didn’t begin too well for AS Roma who suffered a 2-1 defeat at Bologna in front of a 27,439 crowd at the Renato Dall’Ara. Samuel, Emerson and Cassano all picked up yellow cards as AS Roma slipped to an injury-time defeat after had put them in front from the penalty spot. The AS Roma team was: Antonioli; Zebina, Samuel, Panucci; Cafú, Tomassi (Totti 66), Emerson, Lima, Candela; Batistuta, Cassano (Montella 46). The unused subs were Pelizzoli, Dellas, Cufre, Fuser and Tomic. Coach Fabio Capello said “I realised that Bologna had already played serious games in the Intertoto Cup and were well-prepared for the start of the season. From our side, I can only be happy with the physical condition of my players. took Totti’s place as team captain.” Capello believes that Italian teams can once again challenge for the dominance of European competitions. “I am sure that Italian teams will return to being protagonists of the top European football competition.” Roma president Franco Sensi said: “The group is made up of one strong team like Real, one reasonably tough team like AEK and an average side in Genk. We have been treated kindly.” Italian international striker Francesco Totti signalled his return to action after injury by playing the last 24 minutes but is suspended from Tuesday’s match. Argentine Gabriel Batistuta and Lima are also suspended, with Guardiola, Cassano and Montella all now coming into the squad reckoning. European champions Real Madrid CF opened the new campaign with the 3-1 victory over in the UEFA Super Cup and raised the curtain on their domestic league

Matchday One Rome 17 September 2002 AS ROMA – REAL MADRID CF campaign with a comfortable 2-0 home victory over RCD Espanyol. Iván Helguera headed Vicente Del Bosque’s side into the lead after 34 minutes and Steve McManaman added the second two minutes from time. The line-up was: Casillas; Salgado, Hierro, Helguera, Roberto Carlos; Cambiasso (Solari 89), Makelele; Figo (McManaman 82), Zidane, Raúl; and Guti (Morientes 81). The unused subs were César, Pavón, Miñambres and Portillo. , Michel Salgado, Raúl Bravo, Iván Helguera (in midfield) and Raúl were the starters in Spain’s 2-0 EURO 2004 victory in Greece. Raúl scored the opening goal to bring his tally to 29 in 56 international matches. Claude Makelele and took part in France’s hard-fought 2-1 win in Cyprus. Luís Figo played the first half of Portugal’s friendly in England. Last Wednesday Real Madrid made their debut in the Copa del Rey, travelling the short distance to satellite town San Sebastián de los Reyes to take on the local side from Division 3. Despite going a goal down after 13 minutes, they recorded an 8-1 victory – the club’s highest away win in an official competition. Tote and both hit hat-tricks with and supplying the other two goals. Vicente Del Bosque fielded only one () of the starters from the opening league match in a line-up which read: César; Valdo (Guti 46), Pavón, Rubén, Raúl Bravo; McManaman, Cambiasso (Morientes 60), Celades, Solari; Tote and Portillo. The unused subs were Casillas, Hierro and Salgado. Last Saturday’s big league match against Balompié in Seville was nothing like as clear – in fact it was painted in chiaroscuro. Kick-off was delayed 18 minutes due to a failure; the game was interrupted after 6 minutes because the level of lighting was fluctuating; and, in the 44th minute, the stadium was once again plunged into darkness. International referee Juan Antonio Fernández Marín consulted the captains, gave the stadium personnel ten minutes to solve the problem and, when Betis could offer no guarantees that the second half might be floodlit rather than candlelit, called the game off. It turned out that a fault in a generator was blowing all the fuses. Fernández Marín will be hoping to see more light in Trondheim, where he has been appointed to handle the Rosenborg BK v Internazionale FC match. Spanish regulations stipulate that the remaining 46 minutes will have to be played at a later date. If the rule-book is strictly adhered to, it means the teams will have to play the one minute plus added time which remained at the end of the first half; take a 15-minute break; and then play the other 45 minutes. However, both coaches can name different teams rather than field the same line-ups. It means that the re-arranged part of a genuine ‘game of two halves’ will start with Betis leading 1-0. Capi had put them ahead in the 35th minute. The players who did half a day’s work in Seville were: Casillas; Salgado, Hierro, Helguera, Roberto Carlos; Makelele, Cambiasso; Figo, Zidane, Raúl; and Morientes. Reaching for torches on the bench were: César, Pavón, Raúl Bravo, McManaman, Solari, Guti and Portillo. The Real Madrid expedition arranged to leave the Spanish capital at 18.00 on Sunday and had an additional fixture on Monday morning - an audience with the Pope in the Vatican at 12.00noon. AS Roma will hold a press conference with coach Fabio Capello and team captain Damino Tommasi on Monday at the Roma training camp in Trigoria (30 minutes fromStadio Olimpico) at 14.30pm followed shortly afterwards by a training session. Real Madrid CF coach Vicente del Bosque will host a Press Conference in the Press Conference room at the Stadio Olimpico at 18.30pm. The training session will start at the stadium at 19.00.

Matchday One Rome 17 September 2002 AS ROMA – REAL MADRID CF This season’s UEFA Champions League sets a new record by featuring players from 70 different countries, making it a genuine showcase for top talent from all over the world. Last season, players from 51 different countries took part in the competition. As usual, some new publications should be available at all venues on Matchday 1 even though it’s been a rush to print and distribute on time. The UEFA Champions League Statistics Handbook includes the usual information about the 32 clubs, the 32 coaches, the referees, about 800 players and the history of the competition. An expanded and updated version of the All-Time Players’ Appearances handbook is also available. It provides a 130-page record of the 2,485 footballers who contributed to the match action during the first ten years of the UEFA Champions League. The handbook is enclosed with the first issue of the official UEFA Champions League Magazine which includes squad-lists, background information, interviews and features. There’s an old saying that if you start to read something you’ve written, the first thing you’ll spot is a mistake. Unfortunately, it’s true this time round because – nobody can explain why – Manchester United FC’s UEFA Champions League record is pure fiction. If you would like to pencil in the correct version, it reads like this: UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE RECORD Participations P W D L F A Home - 39 24 9 6 86 35 Away - 39 13 15 11 51 40 Neutral - 1 1 0 0 2 1 Overall 7 79 38 24 17 139 76

The financial conditions for the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League campaign remain essentially unchanged in relation to last season. The gross amount in the pool will be at least 1,055 million Swiss francs with 809 million earmarked for the clubs (including 41 million for the professional leagues of the participating associations). Each of the 32 participants will receive a starting fee of 2.5 million Swiss francs plus an appearance fee of 500,000 per match. In addition, there are performance bonuses of 500,000 francs for a win and 250,000 for a draw. In other words, a team winning all six matches in the first group stage would be guaranteed 8.5 million francs – plus the gate receipts from all home games. In the second group stage, the appearance fee and the performance bonuses are the same. The eight quarter-finalists receive 4 million francs apiece; the four semi-finalists earn 5 million each; the beaten finalist receives 6 million and the winner of the UEFA Champions League receives 10 million. One Swiss franc is approximately 0.68 euros. Clubs can also earn additional income from the so-called Market Pool, based on the proportional values of different TV markets and the number of clubs competing from any specific country. This is a complex calculation and precise figures are not usually available until the end of the season. In this phase of the competition, teams’ results against each other have a special relevance, bearing in mind the criteria used to decide the final group positions if two or more teams are tied on the same number of points: Higher number of points in the matches between the teams in question Superior goal difference from matches between the teams in question Higher number of goals scored away from home in matches between the teams in question Goal difference from all group matches

Matchday One Rome 17 September 2002 AS ROMA – REAL MADRID CF Update

65,000 spectators are expected for this game. One sector initially reserved for Spanish fans has been sold to the Italian public as Real Madrid have brought only about 400 supporters with them, who will all be accommodated in the main stand. Fabio Capello is suspended for this game. So will be in charge on the Roma bench. Galbiati has been working as assistant to Fabio Capello for many years at Milan, Real Madrid and now Roma. “Of course I regret not being on the bench against Real Madrid,” Fabio Capello admits. “But I accept the decision as it has been taken.” With Totti, Batistuta and Lima suspended, Guardiola is expected to take a place in midfield while Cassano and Montella will play up front. is now ready for a part- time appearance. AS Roma coach Fabio Capello remains positive despite missing the suspended trio as a result of post-match scuffles in last season’s match against Galatasaray SK. “It makes Cassano and Montella certain for this match. They’re small and Madrid’s defenders are large so you can be sure we’ll be keeping the ball on the ground.” “I will be looking for more intensity, hunger and commitment from the players, something which should allow us to give a performance of the highest level against Madrid.” Captain Damiano Tommasi comments “I regret that Totti cannot play. But for me it is a special motivation to go on the field as team captain. Of course you do not need special motivation if you play against Real Madrid. But being team captain is even something more. We lost our first League game because of mistakes we made in the defence. But it is the whole team that lost and not only the defenders. Mistakes in defence often start in midfield or up front. You win as a team and you lose as a team.” “Our match last season was our first in the Champions League and against a strong team like Madrid. This time we have met them in pre-season and we have a year’s experience under our belts in the UEFA Champions League which makes us stronger.” Tommasi also insisted that the players were keen to bounce back immediately from a shock opening day Serie A defeat to Bologna. “We are used to thinking ahead to the next game and when you lose you want to play again immediately.” “We know we need to play well right from the start of the Champions League in order to proceed. Above all at home and playing against Real Madrid.” Fabio Capello added “last season we had to play our first-ever Champions League game against Real Madrid and we paid for having no experience at that level. This time it is different. We have more experience at international level. I don’t want to speak about the suspended players. The eleven that will go on the pitch have my full support and confidence. The Real game is our first official home game this season. Our public is aware of that and my team will have full support from that side. Besides Real I would nominate Bayern Munich and Arsenal as top candidates to win the Champions League this season.”
