Milwaukee Catholic Home | 3 Postcards from Poland From May 16th-28th, Fr. Tim Kitzke led a group of Milwaukee Catholic Home friends on a pilgrimage to Poland and Prague. 43 individuals participated in the trip, enjoying good food, beautiful architecture, rich history, spiritual growth, and strong community. On these pages, we share just a few of the many stories of our European adventure.

Warsaw May 16-18 Warsaw, our first stop in Poland was rich with history, architecture and art! We explored the streets of Old Town, visited sites such as the Royal Castle and St. John’s Cathedral, and spent some time among the gardens and monuments of Lazienki Park. A highlight of our time in Warsaw was a visit to the Warsaw Zoo and the Villa Zabinskich, two locations featured in the book The Zookeeper’s Wife, which we read and discussed together in preparation for our trip.

Niepokalanow, Czestochowa, Zakopane May 19-20 This series of stops included many shrines and holy places, where we learned new things about the history of the Catholic Church in Poland. In Czestochowa, we visited the Jasna Gora, the largest Marian Shrine in Poland and the home of the “Black Madonna,” a famous image of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the beautiful city of Zakopane, known as Poland’s “winter capital,” we enjoyed the mountain vistas where St. John Paul II enjoyed hiking, skiing, and leading Krakow May 21-22 youth camping trips In Krakow, we visited Wieliczka, the during his early years oldest salt mine in Europe. Wieliczka is an as a priest. A scenic elaborate underground world of chapels, gondola ride took statues and decorations carved entirely us to the top of Mt. from salt. We also continued to follow in Gubalowka! St. John Paul II’s footsteps, visiting the Wawel Cathedral where he celebrated his first Mass and other places where he lived and worked. We also did some shopping at Market Square, one of the largest medieval outdoor markets in Europe.

4 | Milwaukee Catholic Home Our pilgrimage to Poland was not so much a trip as a true spiritual journey and fun adventure! As we progressed we grew in our fascination with the beauty, history, culture, and people of the new places we were seeing. And we grew in our love for God and those with whom we were traveling. Many thanks and blessings to the Catholic Home for sponsoring the trip. You were always in our hearts and prayers! --Fr. Tim Kitzke

The Saints of Poland May 23-24 From our home base in Krakow, we took a number of day trips and learned about the holy Polish men and women who have inspired the Church and the world. We celebrated Mass at the National Shrine of the Divine Mercy and visited the original burial site of St. Faustina. In Wadowice, St. John Paul II’s hometown, we visited his childhood home and the church where he was baptized. We also spent time at Auschwitz, which gave us the opportunity to reflect both on the horrors of the Holocaust and the courage and self-sacrifice of saints such as St. Maximilian Kolbe and St. Theresa Benedicta.

Prague May 25-28 Our time in the historic and picturesque city of Prague included stops at notable sites such as the statue- lined Charles , the Old Town Square, and the Jewish Quarter. We also enjoyed a cruise on the Vltava River. We brought our time together to a close with a gala dinner at famed Czech restaurant Velika Klasterny, including delicious traditional fare and a program of folk song and dance.
