WHAT IS CALFRESH? • CalFresh (known federally as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP) helps people with limited income to buy healthy food. • CalFresh is a nutrition program not a welfare program. • CalFresh benefits are deposited in an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card. It works just like a bank debit card. EBT cards can be used at most grocery stores and farmers’ markets. WHO CAN GET CALFRESH? • The amount of CalFresh a household receives is dependent on household size, countable income, and monthly expenses, such as housing and utilities. • You may be eligible to receive CalFresh even if you have earnings, are unemployed, retired, receiving Social Security Income (SSI), or other benefit programs such as CalWORKs or General Assistance. • To qualify, at least one household member must be an eligible immigrant or citizen. That person can be a child. • Single individuals and couples without children may be eligible to receive CalFresh. • College students may be eligible to get CalFresh if they meet student requirements and are otherwise eligible. • If you get SSI (Supplemental Security Income) you may qualify for CalFresh, if otherwise eligible.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD YOU KNOW ABOUT CALFRESH? • You can own your home and car, and have savings and still be eligible. You do not need to report CalFresh on your tax return. • CalFresh is not a loan. You do not need to pay back benefits that you receive, unless you are overpaid. • If you are 60 years of age or older, homeless or disabled, you are eligible to purchase prepared meals at certified restaurants in Santa Clara County.

UNITED WAY BAY AREA COALITION AGAINST PAYDAY PREDATORS (CAPP) / PUBLIC INTEREST LAW FIRM

The Coalition Against Payday Predators (CAPP) operates during the holiday season and beyond to educate residents about the pitfalls of pay- day lending, while offering alternatives. CAPP encourages substitutes to payday lending, such as reconsidering spending, borrowing from a credit union, seeking assistance from nonprofit agencies, dealing with debt head-on, and proactively saving money. CAPP, and allied partners in California, also advocates for stronger consumer protections for payday loan borrowers, in addition to changing local land use policies that limit the prevalence of payday lenders.
