I had just moved from Washington, D.C. and a position with the National Council for the Traditional Arts, and my friends there had advised me to keep an eye out for “this great little festival” that they’d heard of. So, with my furniture barely situated in my new apartment, I gave the Lotus office a call and was quickly set to work helping to make flight reservations for a particularly VIP artist. And thus began the journey...but it was hardly a journey that I took alone, and I am so grateful to the people I met along the way. To Lee Williams and LuAnne Holladay: Thank you so much for making this festival happen, and for all that you do for Lotus . you bring so much joy and beauty to the Bloomington community, and your work enriches so many lives. Fass THE 2005 LOTUS WORLD MUSIC AND ARTS FESTIVAL: PROCESSES OF PRODUCTION AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF SPATIAL LIMINALITY The dissertation explores the role of space in the production and perception of meaning in the cultural performance genre of festival, using a case-study approach centered on the production of the 2005 Lotus World Music and Arts Festival in Bloomington, Indiana. The study expands the notion of “festival” far beyond the four days of its enactment and encompasses the festival’s year-long production process, one significant element of which is how producers conceive and manipulate space to mobilize a “global” festival within a local geography. Drawing on data gathered via ethnographic methods such as interview and participant-observation, the dissertation analyzes the ways in which spatial considerations play into production decisions and become essential components of a uniquely “festivalized” and liminal participant experience. This study emphasizes space as an actor and prioritizes the affective role of space vis-à-vis the construction of meaning in festival contexts, and its conclusions examine how festival producers use spatial transformations, inversions, and juxtapositions to create powerful loci of ambiguity and symbolic tension. _____________________________________________ _____________________________________________ _____________________________________________ _____________________________________________ vi Table of Contents 1. Februar 2003 Berlin, Garage Pankow Nach langer Fahrt mit den öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln, traf ich gegen 21.15 Uhr endlich in der Garage Pankow ein. Erstmal hieß es Blase leeren, und dabei wurde man auch schon schön mit der passenden Musik beschallt. Von draußen klang es ein wenig wie Black Metal, umso erstaunter war ich als ich die Band erblickte und die 3 Symphoniker so gar nicht wie ne BM-Band aussahen. Als erstes (oder besser gesagt die ersten 3 Lieder die ich mitbekommen habe) dachte ich es wäre noch Soundcheck, denn irgendwie sah es auf der Bühne doch sehr entspannt aus. Der Sänger hockte ab und zu mal auf dem Boden, dann trank er mal wieder nen Schluck, dann hat die Band untereinander nen bißchen gequatscht. Irgendwann merkte ich aber das es schon der Auftritt ist und lauschte mal nen bißchen aufmerksamer. Meine Verwirrung wurde von Lied zu Lied immer größer, denn bei den Dust Devils fand wirklich jede Stilistik ihren Platz. Was eben noch, vom Drumming her, wie alte Darkthrone klang, uferte nur Sekunden später in Grindcoregebolze aus. Der Sänger hatte ne schöne abgrundtiefe Death Metal Stimme bei der sollte er aber auch bleiben, denn diese zwischenzeitliche Rumgequieke klang nun wirklich schon sehr lächerlich (ich war noch nie nen Freund von Grindcore). Irgendwann hatte die Band keine Lust mehr, was ganz natürlich ist, denn hätten die Dust Devils Applaus hören wollen hätten sie sich selbst beklatschen müssen.     Preface to the 5th Edition This book and the Guitar Club that went with it started because one of my old counsellors put a few guitar chords into the official camp song book. Those chords were the reason I learned to play. That summer, when we were last-year campers, regular activities were cancelled one day because of stormy weather. We all piled into the lodge, where we sat with Ryley and her guitar, singing all afternoon. It was the first time a lot of us had ever sung our favourite camp songs with a guitar. At the time, I'd never even heard recordings of most of them. (This is before Napster, kids.) I remain ever thankful that we didn't play Rainy Day Bingo that afternoon. At the end of the summer I started writing in chords for the rest of the song book, which gradually led to the first edition of The Mi-A-Kon-Da Guitar Book. Since then, this book's seen a few new places and met a lot of new songs. It seemed about time to give it a name that would bring everything and everyone together. Turtle Rock does just this. On Birch Island, it's where the whole camp meets after lights out on Mi-A-Kon-Da night to sing quiet songs by the fire, listen to the camp legend, and watch the full moon rise over the lake. It's also where we meet for special cook-outs, reflections, and early in the morning to watch that bittersweet Last Sunrise of the Summer.
