4 JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2016 Kateri Circle News

Remembering Who We Are by Gail B. Rando

As Native Americans, our greatest evangelization tool is simply the way we live, and the love and the reliance we have on the Creator. The gifts of prayer, caring for Mother Earth, and love of family keep us in spiritual harmony and balance. So that, whatever we are doing isn't as important as the spirit with which it is done. We believe that evangelization is the naming of God in every situation; it is a way of viewing life.

As Catholics, we embrace the truth that "we are all related," and our love and devotion for Jesus, our Savior, is the focus of our lives. We call our way of life, "The Good Red Road." As Native American Catholics, we believe in the Wakan, the Holy One, the Crucified and Resurrected Jesus who gave His all for us, and who remains by our side.

We are a simple People, and for us, culture, tradition and spirituality are a blending. There is no dichotomy, but rather a connectedness. Though each "tribe" or "nation" has a specific language, dress, and customs, we are united in all the basic traditions.

Native American Catholics may make up only 3.5% of the Universal Church, but that 3.5% has been tried in the crucible of suffering and has proven its fidelity to the Lord in the exuberance of joy and thanks of our daily walk with Him. It has been said that suffering can make us beautiful or it can make us ugly - the choice is up to us. We've chosen to be beautiful, and to see our loving God in all things, people and situations.

His grace IS all powerful, and it is our sustaining force.

As members of Kateri Circles and the National Tekakwitha Conference, our goal has always been, and will continue to be: evangelization. Now that our many years of prayers have been answered, and St. Kateri Tekakwitha’s life of holiness and sacrifice lived in a joyful spirit has been recognized by the Universal Church, we have even more reason to be not only rejoicing, but sharing the blessings that God has given us through St. Kateri’s prayers.

Now is not the time to relax our efforts, rather it is time to double our efforts at increasing our Kateri Circle membership, helping to grow attendance at the Annual Conference and strengthening evangelization.

As we accomplish this, we are indeed, sharing the Good News: God is alive, He is among us, He cares deeply for each and every one of us, He wants our success – and He asks so little.....just to love Him and one another.

We have a mission! Let us work together and move forward with God’s help!

Glory belongs to God whose power is at work in us. By this power, He can do infinitely more than we can ask for or desire. Eph. 3:20

National Catholic Youth Conference NCYC in Indianapolis, IN November 2015 It was wonderful! I attached some pictures. We had a lot of youth come through the area and spend a good amount of time there. We had an artist from Kentucky do a chainsaw carving of Saint Kateri, and the statue was a piece of a photo scavenger hunt. At least 1000 youth came to take pictures with her. Many people thought the relics neat and liked seeing them up close. You can see in the pictures we had two triangle pedestals which had "magic paper" on them. Magic paper rapidly absorbs water and the youth used paint brushes to write their prayers and pray with Kateri. The youth wrote a lot of prayers on those as well.
