RESOLUTION

TCM Classic Film Festival 2014

WHEREAS, for the fifth consecutive year, thousands of movie lovers from around the globe will descend upon Hollywood for the TeM Classic Film Festival. The 2014 festival is set to take place Thursday, April 10 - Sunday, April 13, coinciding with Turner Classic Movies' - TClvl's - 20th anniversary as a leading authority in classic film; and

WHEREAS, the TeM Classic Film Festival is always amazingly fun, illuminating and memorable for fans of movies, and invariably proves to be extraordinarily enriching for anyone who has ever been intrigued and entranced by our culture and eager to learn more about its artistic history and cinematic wonders; and

WHEREAS, over four packed days and nights, attendees will be treated to an extensive lineup of great movies, appearances by legendary stars and filmmakers, fascinating presentations and panel discussions, special events and more; and

WHEREAS, the theme for the 2014 TCM Classic Film Festival will be Family in the Movies: The Ties that Bind, Throughout the four-day lineup, the festival will showcase on-screen clans of all types - big and small, happy and imperfect, musical and dramatic. In addition, the festival will spotlight the first families of Hollywood and the filmmaking dynasties that have entertained generations, And it will explore the kinship that connects close-knit groups of professionals behind the camera, such as the stock companies of classic Hollywood; and

WHEREAS, the countless fans of classic film are encouraged to visit the festival website www.tcm.comlfestival. which is filled with great information. (Also, passes for the 2014 TCM Classic Film Festival can be purchased through this website- availability is limited, so those wishing to attend the festival are encouraged to buy their passes quickly.) WHEREAS, The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, which has a longstanding role in movie history and was the site of the first Academy Awards® ceremony, is set to serve as the official hotel and central gathering point for the TCM Classic Film Festival for the fifth consecutive year, (The Hollywood Roosevelt also offers special rates for festival attendees). Festival screenings and events will be held at the TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX, the TeL Chinese 6 Theatres, the Egyptian Theatre, El Capitan, The Hollywood Museum and The Ricardo Montalban Theatre; and

WHEREAS, the City of Los Angeles and the community of Hollywood are incredibly proud and thrilled to be host to this remarkable festival that gathers together so much of the art and industry of film. This vastly enjoyable festival serves to commemorate and memorialize some of the greatest creative accomplishments of modern humanity - accomplishments that have greatly shaped, and been shaped by, by Los Angeles and generations of its people and businesses, In many ways, the history of classic film IS the history of Los Angeles:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Los Angeles salutes and celebrates the TCM CLASSIC FILM FESTIVAL 2014, and wishes every single person who makes it possible, and every single fan who rejoices in its delights, the very best of times in those days and nights of April 10-13 that comprise this festival. RESOLUTION

Shirley Jones

WHEREAS, Shirley Mae Jones was born on March 31,1934, in Charleroi, Pennsylvania. She was the only child born to Marjorie and Paul Jones, a beer manufacturer. At an early age, Marjorie Jones recognized that her daughter had a natural gift for singing. went on to study drama at the Pittsburgh Playhouse, after which she performed with the Civic Light Opera Company. While in her teens, she was crowned Miss Pittsburgh, a title that started her on a path to a career in show business; and

WHEREAS, While vacationing in with her parents, the 19-year-old Jones auditioned for the songwriters Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. Her wholesome appearance and well-trained soprano voice impressed the team, who cast her in a minor role in their Broadway production of Me and Juliet (1953). Standing out among the large cast, Jones was eventually signed to play the lead on tour; and

WHEREAS, The following year, with some valid stage experience under her belt, Jones was cast to star in Rodgers and Hammerstein's film version of Oklahoma!. Released in 1955, the multimillion-dollar production met with acclaim from critics, who felt Jones was the perfect choice to play the movie's heroine Laurey. She followed the success of her film debut with a turn in the 1956 feature adaptation of Carousel. Opportunities continued to come her way, and she landed leading roles inApril Love (1957) and Never Steal Anything Small (1959), which paired her with leading man James Cagney; and

WHEREAS, In 1960, Jones shed her girl-next-door image by taking a dramatic tum in the film Elmer Gantry. Her performance as a jilted girlfriend turned prostitute earned her admiration and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. For the remainder of the decade, Jones continued to work in films. She returned to her musical roots as Marian the Librarian in The Music Man (1962); she took on lighter roles in the comedies The Courtship of Eddie's Father (1963) and Bedtime Story (1964); and showed her flair for the dramatic in The Happy Ending (1969) and The Cheyenne Social Club (1970); and

WHEREAS, In 1970, Jones made a transition to the small screen in ABCs musical sitcom ; and

WHEREAS, She was cast as the recently widowed mother of a singing family. The show was a hit, making household names of its actors and actresses - (Jones' real-life stepson with Jack Cassidy), Susan Dey and Danny Bonaduce. The cast capitalized on the show's popularity by recording a few albums which included songs like "I Think I Love You" and "Doesn't Somebody Want to Be Wanted"; and

WHEREAS, In the early 1990s, Jones focused her efforts on a successful concert career, touring the U.S. as a singer. Most recently, she continued to work in television, where her credits included a recurring role on The Drew Carey Show, and guest appearances on Melrose Place and Sabrina, the Teenage Witch; and

WHEREAS, In early 2008, it was announced that Shirley would play Colleen Brady on the soap opera Days af aur Lives; and

WHEREAS, Shirley Jones's movie, television and stage roles, a record breaking Broadway run, two recent Emmy nominations, and an ongoing career of symphony concerts and speaking engagements world wide has earned Shirley Jones an incandescent place in the heart of all America that doesn't ever seem to go away:

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that by the adoption of this resolution, the Los Angeles City Council does hereby commend and acknowledge SHIRLEY JONES for her lustrous career in the world of entertainment. Mark Williams

Concerned Citizens South Central Los Angeles

WHEREAS, The relationship between a community and its residents is a vital and interdependent one, deriving its strength from the quantity and quality of civic involvement and public spirit generated by individuals, connnunity organizations, and philanthropic groups; and

WHEREAS, In recognition of the immeasurable contributions and positive impact he has made to the local community and beyond, Mr. Mark Williams be deserving of the special honors and highest commendation of the public; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Williams has raised money and provided valuable resources & relationships that have benefitted many worthy non-profit organizations. His passion and desire ranges from supporting organizations benefitting children; and creating soccer Leagues throughout Los Angeles County. Mr. Williams continues to concentrate his attention to improve the lives of others; and

WHEREAS, As an entrepreneur and investor, Mr. Williams Co-founded Concerned Citizens South Central Los Angeles (C.C.S.C.L.A.), In 1985 to oppose a waste-burning incinerator slated for the middle of the neighborhood. After a 2 year fight they defeated the project. Recoguizing that the enviromnent was more than pollution, the founders decided to stay together to address quality of life issues in the Vernon Central neighborhood of Los Angeles; and

WHEREAS, Since that time c.C.S.C.L.A. and Mr. Mark Williams have developed over 700 units of affordable housing, helped to establish a federal credit union, organized more than 57 bloek clubs, provided employment training and screening services, youth development services, soccer programming, gang intervention and prevention services and engaged in public policy development activities including development of the 2-pronged gang intervention model that has been recognized nationally as the first-ever definition of gang intervention; and

WHEREAS, The mission and purpose C.C.S.C.L.A is a organization fostering of interest among its members and community in social, economic and environmental conditions and growth of their eommunity. Additionally, to assist in the development of low income housing in Southern California communities by providing technical and other assistance to nonprofit housing development corporations; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Williams has established himself an active leader within the world, a hands on strategist and a philanthropie citizen utilizing his talents to create unique opportunities to help many including those with Developmental Disabilities to thrive and effectively impact the world. Thus improving the lives of others and laying the groundwork to improve the quality of life of those he encounters and the eommunity- at-large:

Marshall Bruce Mathers HI

WHEREAS, The relationship between a eommunity aud its residents is a vital and interdependent one, deriving its strength from the quantity and quality of civic involvement aud public spirit generated by individuals, community organizations, and philanthropic groups; and

Whereas, In recognition of the immeasurable contributions and positive impact he has made to the local eommunity and beyond, Marshall Bruce Mathers III deserving of the special honors and highest commendation of the public; and

Whereas, Mr. Mathers III founded his own charity named The Marshall Mathers Foundation, assisting disadvantaged youth. The foundation works in eonjunction with a charity founded by Norman Yatooma. Mr. Mathers every year has helped at least 420 more children this year, and has, along with his Marshall Mathers Foundation, spent at least $200,000 to purchase presents for the children in the two-year spau; and

Whereas as an entrepreneur and investor, Marshall Bruce Mathers III has opened other ventures, including his own reeord label Shady Reeords, an Ameriean reeord label speeializing in hip hop music. Mr. Mathers III and his manager Paul Rosenberg founded the label in 1999 after the highly suecessful release of The Slim Shady LP; and

Whereas Since the formation, the label has signed nine acts. It has also been part of the business venture in Shade 45 radio station via Sirius Satellite Radio, and had its own dedicated special edition magazine via XXL magazine. The labels aets over the years have earned RIAA eertifieations of platinum or higher on seven of its 14 released albums; and

Whereas, Through his role as the Founder of The Marshall Mathers Foundation- Mr. Mathers III on Deeember 3, partuer and promise to donate match made to Wolverine Humau Serviees will be matehed dollar-to-dollar by Marshall Mathers Foundation. And The Marshall Mathers Foundation's mission is to provide funds for orgauizations working with at-risk youth in southeast Miehigan and throughout the U.S. aud Wolverine Humau Serviees is a non-profit organization that provides eare for youth throughout the state of Michigan. And Mr. Mathers III foundation will mateh donations up to a total of $100,000. The donated funding was used to raise over millions of dollars to help seriously ill, under-privileged, and disabled ehildren through the United States; and

Whereas, Mr. Mathers III is very passionate about the eauses he supports like RisklDisadvantaged Youths, Children, Human Rights, Poverty, and

Whereas, Mr. Marshall Bruce Mathers III has established himself an aetive leader within the world, and a philanthropic citizen striving to improve the quality of life of those he encounters and the community-at- large:

WHEREAS, In recognition of the immeasurable contributions and positive impact he has made to the local community and beyond, Mr. Juan "Rocky" Martinez deserving of the special honors and highest commendation of the public; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Martinez has raised millions of dollars and provided valuable resources & relationships that have benefitted many worthy non-profit organizations. His passion and desire ranges from supporting organizations benefitting children; and creating soccer Leagues throughout Los Angeles County. WHEREAS, As an entrepreneur and investor, Mr. Martinez fonnded the Los Angeles Premier League "LA Premier" were he serves as President, a Soccer League at G.W. Carver Middle School where many players have been drafted by Major League Soccer Teams including Chivas USA and Los Angeles Galaxy; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Martinez believes his inspiration was his farther, Jose Martinez who inspired him as a child and imparted both the importance and responsibility of giving back, helping those in need and performing random acts of kindness. Both his parents continue to lead by example and have demonstrated countless examples which leave a lasting impression and will always be part of his own legacy to leave this world a better place through programs like soccer; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Martinez has established himself an active leader within the world, a hands on strategist and a philanthropic citizen utilizing his talents to create unique opportunities for all ages in soccer to thrive and effectively impact the world. WHEREAS, since 1986, the month of April has been proclaimed Month of the Military Child which is a month-long observance to acknowledge, honor and recognize the service of our littlest heroes, our military children and the important role military children play in our communities; and

WHEREAS, there are approximately 1.9 million military children, ranging in ages from newborn to 18 years old, 1.3 million military children are school-aged and more than 700,000 children have experienced the deployment of one or more parents since 2001 with California having the highest number of Active Duty, National Guard and Army Reserve personnel in the Nation with over half of those service members being parents; and

WHEREAS, the Military Child serves and sacrifices for her/his country, often in silence, and gives in ways that are not readily apparent. As they travel the globe themselves, vicariously through their military service member or experience family separations through deployments, the reintegration issues become especially challenging and yet, they grow and become an inspiration and a source of pride for our nation; and

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT by adoption of this resolution, the Los Angeles City Council joins with the Nation in recognizing the strength and sacrifices of our military children and does hereby proclaim April as the Month of the Military Child.

James V. Adams

WHEREAS, Mr. Adams has been President of Chaminade College Preparatory since July, 1996, and has worked in Catholic education for 42 years. Prior to his joining Chaminade, he served as a teacher, principal, assistant superintendent and Superintendent of Schools in Diocese of Sacramento; and

WHEREAS, he is a native of the San Fernando Valley and a graduate of Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks and California State University, Northridge. He also holds a Masters degree from the University of San Francisco in Education Administration; and

WHEREAS, he served on the adjunct faculty of the Education Leadership program at St. Mary's College in Moraga and is a part-time consultant with Meitler Consultants, Inc., and educational plarming firm located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and

WHEREAS, over his IS-year tenure as President, Jim Adams has skillfully and thoughtfully guided Chaminade College Preparatory through a period of unprecedented growth, and maintained a strong foundation for Catholic education. Under his leadership, both campuses have benefited from the addition of new, state-of- the-art buildings and two capital campaigns; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Adams led Chaminade during the Great Recession; a period during Chaminade maintained a balanced budget, launched a One-to-One Student Tablet PC Program, and tripled its financial aid budget since the 2006-2007 school year. He has always demonstrated a commitment to financial aid- since his first school year (1996-1997) Chaminade has increased its budget from $S4,157 to $2.9 million. His vision has furthered the school's mission to form academically capable and morally aware young people to be outstanding contributions to the future; and

WHEREAS, in 2010, Mr. Adams was named by San Fernando Valley Business Journal as Best-Not-for-Profit Executive. In 2012, he received the Catholic Secondary Education Award from the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) for his distinguished service to Catholic education; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Adams is active in the community and served on the board of the Boys and Girls Club of the West Valley, Advisory Council for Community Bank, Sacramento Blood Bank, the Heart Research Founda~ and Catholic Charities.
