TITLE: Coordinator of Staff/Moderator of the * DEPARTMENT: ’s Office LOCATION: Chancery

PURPOSE OF THIS POSITION The Coordinator of Staff/Moderator of the Curia* is appointed by the bishop to coordinate and supervise the exercise of administrative responsibilities for the Diocese of _____. The Coordinator of Staff is responsible for leading and coordinating diocesan operations and administration in order to assure that diocese’s goals are met with respect to effective and efficient operations, reliable financial reporting, and compliance with applicable laws and regulation. The Coordinator also works with diocesan staff to appropriately support the bishop in his chief roles of teaching, sanctifying, and governing the faithful and to foster mutually responsive relationships with diocesan institutions (parishes, Catholic schools, etc).*NOTE: According to Law (c473.2 and c473.3) only a priest, preferably the Vicar General, can be appointed to serve in this position with title “Moderator of the Curia.”

RESPONSIBILITIES and ASSOCIATED TASKS Other responsibilities and tasks may be assigned for the good of co-workers and the mission of the diocese Primary [Approximate Time Allocation] Administrative Leadership [30%] o Support the bishop in providing leadership to the senior diocesan staff, shaping the values, principles, and operating policies that are the basis for a strong internal control system o Supervise and give work direction to administrative assistance and the heads of major diocesan departments/offices: Finance, Personnel, Services, Education, Planning, Ministry, and Legal o Strengthen the staff’s performance and morale through providing a collegial working environment that also maintains clear lines of authority and accountability o Ensure senior diocesan staff have a clear understanding of the Church’s mission and the vision of bishop to better advise and contribute to strategic planning for bringing this vision into reality for the diocese o Meet regularly with senior diocesan staff to review activities, ensure effective communications and set-up monitoring procedures to assure close coordination of all diocesan efforts toward key institution and departmental objectives o Develop succession plans for grooming future leaders for senior diocesan positions as well as attract and retain competent personnel for all administrative positions

Operations Management [30%] o Communicate regularly with the Vicar General (or bishop) to report on the status of diocesan operations and to receive work direction/supervision o Continually reinforce the diocese’s vision and mission in working relationships and management processes o Work with bishop and senior diocesan staff to identify and prioritize work objectives to optimize the outcomes given the human, financial, and other resources available o Review reports of each department’s activities and developments and, if necessary, work with senior diocesan staff to adapt strategies as needed to meet required goals

Strategy [25%] o Develop a strategic framework in which to operate that meet short-term targets toward long- term goals o Analyze available external data and internal reports from operational, compliance and financial perspectives identify potential opportunities for the diocese, mitigate risks and, manage the impact on operational and mission effectiveness in a cost effective manner o Advise the bishop, Finance Council, and CFO in developing and approving a diocesan-wide budget focused on achieving the pastoral, financial, and operational plans for the diocese o Lead senior staff in proposing and/or revising major policies for the bishop to consider for approval o IF VICAR GENERAL: Collaborate with the bishop in leading the ongoing diocesan strategic planning process includes all senior diocesan staff and other key advisors

Constituent Relations [15%] o Provide a key example for other diocesan employees in following the bishop who is the executive as well as spiritual leader of the diocese o Communicate a vision of high-quality, accessible, and relevant service at the diocesan level o Interact with various constituents, especially and parishioners, to better understand the context for diocesan serve and to monitor the effectiveness of diocesan offices in progressing toward their approved goals and objectives o Utilize various means to deepen employee’s understanding of the relationship of their work to that of the bishop and their acceptance of the strategic direction of the diocese o Participate in committees and commissions as assigned to coordinate all aspects of diocesan service for effective, yet efficient operations o Participate in professional associations and conferences, especially ______?___ to expand knowledge of national and international issues influencing the Church and to develop a network of useful contacts

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Minimum of 15 years of experience in various management and financial areas, with 5 years experience in executive-level position such as COO, Vice President, or General Manager; multiple professional responsibilities in leadership positions within a large, complex organization, preferably the Catholic Church; Experience in staff supervision and training, strategic planning, financial management, and general operational oversight

Education: Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Management, Accounting, or Finance or equivalent work experience; Masters of Business Administration (MBA) or other advanced degree preferred; some training in

Licenses/Certifications: Certificate in Management Accounting (CMA) desirable; Doctorate or Licentiate in Canon Law a plus
