Previous work has established that a WGD affects most lineages in the Papilionoideae and occurred sometime after the divergence of the papilionoid and mimosoid clades, but the exact timing has been unknown. -

SHANTI SWARUP BHATNAGAR PRIZE FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 2005 Biological Sciences Dr Tapas Kumar Kundu The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for the year 2005 in Biological Sciences has been awarded to Dr Tapas Kumar Kundu of the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore. Dr Kundu has done outstanding research in the area of chromatin transcription. He has identified PC4 as a functional component of chromatin and as a unique activator of P53. He has also established the role of acetylation in chromatin transcription and histone chaperone activity, besides using this process for identifying new drug candidates. & Dr Shekhar Chintamani Mande The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for the year 2005 in Biological Sciences has been awarded to Dr Shekhar Chintamani Mande of the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics, Hyderabad. Dr Mande has contributed very richly to the area of structural biology of proteins. His studies have thrown light on the unrecognized function of chaperonin-10 of Mycobacterium tuberculosis . His studies have provided unusual insights to the mechanism of action of heat shock proteins and those involved in oxidative stress from M. tuberculosis. Chemical Sciences Dr Samaresh Bhattacharya The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for the year 2005 in Chemical Sciences has been awarded to Dr Samaresh Bhattacharya of the Jadavpur University, Kolkata. Dr Bhattacharya has made outstanding contributions to the platinum group coordination compounds and their applications to activation of organic molecules. & Dr S Ramakrishnan The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for the year 2005 in Chemical Sciences has been awarded to Dr S. Ramakrishnan of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. -

As a consequence, in the past fifty years, there has been a paradigm shift in our interpreting the life process. In the process, modern biology had acquired a truly interdisciplinary character in which all streams of sciences have made monumental contributions. Because of such rapid emergence as a premier subject of teaching and research; a necessity to restructure classical teachings in biology was recognised by the academics worldwide. In tune with such trends, the academic leadership of Jawaharlal Nehru University conceptualised the School of Life Sciences as an interdisciplinary research/teaching programme unifying various facets of biology while reflecting essential commonality regarding structure, function and evolution of biomolecules. The School was established in 1973 and since offering integrated teaching and research at M. Sc/ Ph.D level in various sub-disciplines in life sciences. Since inception, it remained dedicated to its core objectives and evolved to be one of the top such institutions in India and perhaps in South East Asia. -

He started the college in 1917 in Bangalore under the University of Mysore. It was started as the School of Engineering with 20 students each in Civil and Mechanical Engineering branches. It was the fifth engineering college to be started in India and the first one in Mysore State. In 1965, the name of the college was changed to University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering after its founder. It is currently the only constituent college of Bangalore University. The name UVCE is very popular in the field of technical education in Karnataka. In its existence of 103 years, the college has a history of great reputation and countless number of alumni. Through this exhibition, we supported the Year of Water initiative as observed by the Government of Karnataka. It also featured H2O Today, a popular traveling exhibition by the Smithsonian Institution. We encouraged visitors to explore the collective experiences of water and refIect on future challenges through a range of dynamic exhibits and workshops. We presented 15 exhibits spread across three floors of Bangalore International Centre, which examined the role of water in our lives, beyond the value that we derive from it. These exhibits were brought to life through 45 connected programmes such as workshops, lectures, master classes, film screenings and musical performances. Participants engaged with the latest research and thinking on water, and examined its cultural significance, by interacting with scholars and artists from around the world. Current Affairs 2013- January International The Fourth Meeting of ASEAN and India Tourism Minister was held in Vientiane, Lao PDR on 21 January, in conjunction with the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2013. The Meeting was jointly co-chaired by Union Tourism Minister K.Chiranjeevi and Prof. Dr. Bosengkham Vongdara, Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Lao PDR. Both the Ministers signed the Protocol to amend the Memorandum of Understanding between ASEAN and India on Strengthening Tourism Cooperation, which would further strengthen the tourism collaboration between ASEAN and Indian national tourism organisations. The main objective of this Protocol is to amend the MoU to protect and safeguard the rights and interests of the parties with respect to national security, national and public interest or public order, protection of intellectual property rights, confidentiality and secrecy of documents, information and data. Both the Ministers welcomed the adoption of the Vision Statement of the ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit held on 20 December 2012 in New Delhi, India, particularly on enhancing the ASEAN Connectivity through supporting the implementation of the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity. The Ministers also supported the close collaboration of ASEAN and India to enhance air, sea and land connectivity within ASEAN and between ASEAN and India through ASEAN-India connectivity project. In further promoting tourism exchange between ASEAN and India, the Ministers agreed to launch the ASEAN-India tourism website (www.indiaasean.org) as a platform to jointly promote tourism destinations, sharing basic information about ASEAN Member States and India and a visitor guide. The Russian Navy on 20 January, has begun its biggest war games in the high seas in decades that will include manoeuvres off the shores of Syria. -

College, Dibrugarh - 786 001 (Assam), India. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Changes in botanical names of flowering plants are an issue which comes up from time to time. While there are valid scientific reasons for such changes, it also creates some difficulties to the floristic workers in the preparation of a new flora. Further, all the important monumental floras of the world have most of the plants included in their old names, which are now regarded as synonyms. In north east India, “Flora of Assam” is an important flora as it includes result of pioneering floristic work on Angiosperms & Gymnosperms in the region. But, in the study of this flora, the same problems of name changes appear before the new researchers. Therefore, an attempt is made here to prepare an updated account of the new names against their old counterpts of the plants included in the first two volumes of the flora, on the basis of recent standard taxonomic literatures. In this, the unresolved & controversial names are not touched & only the confirmed ones are taken into account. In the process new names of 470 (four hundred & seventy) dicotyledonous plant species included in the concerned flora are found out.
