General Information

GENERAL INFORMATION

The following information is intended to help make your Silversea cruise more enjoyable and rewarding. After all, your experience ashore should be nothing short of what your delights are on board.

In an effort to furnish you with the best possible information about what to expect during your time ashore, our Shore Concierge Team will provide additional tour and port details once the cruise is underway. On the Shore Concierge Chanel on your TV there is a very helpful introductory video on Channel 3, we highly recommend you to watch.

Travelling independently? We are happy to help with our “Privato” program in most ports or contact the Shore Concierge Team for a truly bespoke arrangement.

Quality varies greatly from port to port and culture to culture so your patience and understanding is always appreciated.

They will have desk hours to devote to individual enquiries, as well as hosting informal discussions with groups of guests. Going Ashore

SILVERSEA SHUTTLE SERVICE

Complimentary transportation may be provided by Silversea when the local town is beyond a reasonable walking distance from the port. This service may not be possible in ports where a strong taxi union exists, preventing Silversea from providing a complimentary shuttle. The availability and schedule for this service will be announced by the Shore Concierge Team and listed in the Silversea Chronicles. We are not able to advise this in advance.

Operationally, intervals between shuttle bus departures are hourly, approximate and could be affected by local traffic. Silversea is not liable for any unforeseen delays. There will be a break in service for driver meal times. Shuttle service is offered during the day only. The shuttle service is designed to augment local transportation; guests requiring more flexibility may prefer not to wait for a shuttle and secure a taxi at their own expense.

TOUR TRANSPORTATION

Silversea makes every attempt to secure the best available tour vehicles and guides in each port of call. However, in some ports the best equipment may not be luxurious and may fall short of your expectations.

CHILDREN ON TOUR

To ensure the safety of our younger guests, children up to the age of 8 years old are only permitted to participate in suitable Silver Shore Excursions/shuttle service if the vehicles are equipped with the correct safety harness and seating equipment to accommodate young guests. Alternately guests may use their own approved safety seat, booster seat or harness as long as they are compatible with the local touring vehicle and can properly secure the young guest. Child harnesses and secure seating cannot be guaranteed. Silversea reserves the right to refuse children under the age of 8 years old on any tour on the basis of safety.

GRATUITIES

Gratuities for local guides and drivers are not included in the excursion price. It is customary to tip tour guides. Such gratuities should be extended on a voluntary, individual basis. On all tours with meals or beverages, restaurant gratuities are included.

MOBILE TELEPHONES

As a courtesy to fellow guests, kindly refrain from using mobile telephones while on tour so as not to interfere with the guide’s explanations. Most tours make frequent stops, allowing time for guests to use their mobile telephones. We appreciate your understanding in this matter.

SMOKING

For reasons of safety and comfort, smoking is not permitted on any of the tour vehicles. Your understanding in this matter is appreciated.

VIDEO/PHOTOGRAPHY CHARGES

At some museums, sites and monuments, photography and/or the use of video cameras may not be allowed or may incur a charge. These charges are not included in the tour price and are at guests’ own expense.

SHOPPING STOPS

While our organised excursions are not generally geared to the serious shopper, some tours allow for short shopping stops as indicated in the tour description. In the interest of all tour participants, guests should adhere to the allotted time and return to the tour vehicle promptly as advised by the tour guide or ship’s escort.

Please Note: The selection of shops is generally left to the discretion of the tour operator. Silversea does require that establishments be reputable, of general interest to our guests and offer quality goods. However, all purchases are the responsibility of the individual.

Itinerary, all arrangements, and prices are subject to change without notice. For full-fare guests booked on or after January 15, 2015, Silver Shore Select Excursions are included; Silver Shore Collection and Privato tours are specially priced. Guests booked prior to January 15, 2015 may reserve shore excursions at our published prices.

Shore Excursions for Mykonos (Greece) Wednesday, 30 September, 2015

The Sacred Island of Delos JMK-A

Duration: 4.00 Hours Price: $79 / Included

Experience the ancient beauty and ruins of Delos during a scenic and informative half-day tour of this sacred island.

Depart the ship for the brief transfer to the local ferry dock, then board a ferry, or 'caique', for the 45- minute ride to the tiny, uninhabited island of Delos. Upon arrival, your tour continues on foot.

Although Delos Island only has an area of approximately 1.5 square-miles (about four square- kilometres), it was once a very important religious, cultural and commercial centre. Today, the island is covered with ruins from fallen columns, sections of the famous mosaics that adorned the houses of the wealthy, a stadium and seats from a theatre. A row of five marble lions also stands amidst these ruins.

Mykonos is probably the most well-known and talked about of all the Greek islands. Upon arriving in Mykonos Town, your walking tour will begin to showcase both the lifestyle and the true history of this unique town.

Commence your walking tour through the narrow whitewashed streets; here you can appreciate the fact that its' confusing layout was designed to foil the attacking pirates. Akrotiri's Destruction

A volcanic eruption circa 1,600 B.C. destroyed all life on the island, and the island itself sank beneath the waves. Excavations at the archaeological site of Akrotiri document the existence of life on Strongyle, legendary Atlantis; although no written records have ever surfaced to support this. Marvelous frescoes were found in some of the houses and are now on display in the national archaeological museum in Athens.

Akrotiri Excavations

Depart the ship by a local tender to Athinios, where you join the waiting motor-coach. Enjoy your scenic drive to the southern end of the island and the archaeological site of Akrotiri. The excavations at Akrotiri, led by Professor Spyros Marintos, began in 1967. It is an amazing city with houses, streets, squares and workshops, all of which had been covered under a thick blanket of pumice since 1,600 B.C. You are able to walk around this ancient city among well-preserved buildings, which will give you an insight into the ancient civilisation of Santorini, the center of a civilisation akin to the Minoans of Crete.

Self-Exploration

After the tour of the excavations discover the nearby village and explore one of the 5 fortified settlements on the island in medieval times. (Optional walking tour on your own along the narrow streets of the village for access to this polygonal tower-castle and admiring the stunning views towards the south and west side of the island). At the end of tour, return through the beautiful countryside to Fira, the picturesque capital town of the island built on the rim of the caldera wall. Time permitting, enjoy the town at leisure or perhaps relax over a coffee and enjoy the magnificent panoramic views of the volcanic island, the caldera and the sea.

Please note: This tour involves moderate walking and is suitable for guests with limited mobility; however it is not wheelchair accessible. Guests should wear seasonal clothing, flat walking shoes and sun protection. Tour timeline may vary to avoid overcrowding at the site. Lines may be encountered for the cable cars during the busy summer-season. Some walking is necessary, as there is a 2-block interval between the cable car station and the coach disembarkation point.

A brief stop here, the highest point of the island, offers a spectacular panorama of the caldera below. Leaving Pyrgos, re-board your coach for the drive to Oia.

As you traverse its narrow cobbled streets you will come across many tiny shops which offer a varied and unusual collection of hand made works of ceramic art, paintings and semi precious jewelry. Coffee shops perched on the edge of the cliffs offer spectacular views of Fira and the volcano. Oia was once a major fishing harbour. The ship's tenders depart from the pier at Skala Harbour, located just a few steps from the lower cable car terminus.

Ancient Ephesus KUS-A

Duration: 6.50 Hours Price: $149 / Reduced $95

Embrace the ancient beauty, sites and treasures of Ephesus during a full-day tour of this spectacular old city.

Home of the Virgin Mary

Depart the pier for the drive out of Kusadasi, and towards Bulbul Mountain to see the house believed to be the last home of the Virgin Mary. The Virgin Mary is said to have come here in the company of St. John towards the end of her life, around 40 A.D. The house was officially recognised by the Vatican in 1896 after being described in visions by a German nun who hadn't previously seen nor visited the house; at the time, it had yet to be discovered. Each year, Christians and Muslims who honour 'Meryemana' as the mother of a great prophet make religious pilgrimages to the site. Beneath the house is a fountain where a sacred spring feeds three fonts, each bestowing a unique blessing upon visitors. From here, re- board your coach and continue on for the drive to Ephesus.

Ephesus

In ancient times, Ephesus hosted St. Paul, St. John and the Virgin Mary. Ephesus was an important Greek trading city of Ionia. Later, it became Rome's provincial capital and was home to one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The massive foundation of the Temple of Diana can still be seen here today after 3,000 years. Greek Theatre and Temple of Hadrian

Your archaeological tour continues with a visit to the Temple of Hadrian, built in the 2nd century A.D. in the name of the Emperor.

The house was officially recognised by the Vatican in 1896 after being described in visions by a German nun who had not previously seen nor visited the house; at the time, it had yet to be discovered.

Each year, Christians and Muslims who honour 'Meryemana' as the mother of a great prophet make religious pilgrimages to the site. Beneath the house is a fountain where a sacred spring feeds three fonts, each bestowing a unique blessing upon visitors. From here, re-board your coach and continue on for the drive to Ephesus.

Depart from the pier for a visit to Claros Antique Site with your guide and expert who will add a new and exciting dimension to the discoveries and treasures of Claros and Ephesus during this exclusive programme.

Claros and the Temple of Apollo

Claros is a prophecy centre of Colophon, one of the twelve Ionic cities. Claros is built between two cities; it is 8 miles (13 kilometres) south of Colophon and 1.25 miles (2 kilometres) north of Notion. The Temple of Apollo here was a very important centre of prophecy as in Delphi and Didyma. The oldest information about this sacred site goes back to the sixth and seventh centuries B.C. through the Homeric Hymns. A sacred cave near the Claros' Temple of Apollo, an important place both in the Hellenistic and Roman eras, points to the existence of a Cybele cult here during the earlier periods.

Discoveries

Claros' Apollo sacred side was first discovered by S. Schuchardt. Later, in 1907, Theodore Macridy found a column of a propylon, a monumental entrance building. In 1913, Macridy worked with Charles Picard and together they found the propylon, which contains a large exedra.

The excavations were suspended during World War I and were restarted by Louis Robert in 1950 and

Pergamum & Asclepion DIK-A

Duration: 5.50 Hours Price: $89 / Included

Discover the archaelogical ruins from the ancient Roman city of Pergamon and the ancient health center, The Asclepion on this half-day tour.

Pergamum

Depart from Dikili port to Pegamum, passing through the fertile plains watered by the Selinus River, a site settled by one civilization after another since ancient timamum was ruled by Lydians and by Persians before falling to Alexander the Great in 334 BC. When Alexander died, control of the city passed to one of his generals, Lysimahchus, who controlled a great part of the Aegean region. After Lysimachus' death a cascade of kings and emperors ruled the city and the kingdom of which it was the center, from Philatairos to Attalus to Eumenes, to Atallus II, whose will finally declared that Pergamum would become a part of the Roman Empire after his death.

500 years later, around 300 AD, this already great city's golden age began with the invention of parchment in the city. You will tour the remains of the city's most famous landmark, a library that contained 200,000 volumes and put Pergamum on a par with Alexandria as a cultural center of the Roman Empire.

As you walk around the acropolis, located atop a steep hill with a spectacular view, you will get the impression that the city was built to be an inaccessible fortress. And it was. Continue on, admiring the celebrated library, a steep and impressively dignified theater, temples of Trajan and Dionysus, the monumental altar of Zeus, the sanctuary of Demeter, a gymnasium on three terraces, and the Agora.

Asclepion

Your next stop will be the Asclepion, named after the god of health, which is reached via a sacred road lined with still more monuments and architectural fragments from antiquity. The Asclepion added to the city's reputation as a center of learning and science, and contained a rehabilitation center, an Ionic portico, sacred spring, latrines, and a "psychotherapy tunnel".

At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach for the 45-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: The visit to Permamum involves an extensive amount of walking uphill and downhill on uneven ground. The site of the Asclepion is on level ground. It is not recommended for guests who utilise a wheelchair or those with limited mobility. Sturdy walking shoes, a sun hat and long pants to avoid scratches from the briar bushes are recommended.

Bargama Town & Asclepion DIK-B

Duration: 5.50 Hours Price: $89 / Reduced $65

This tour has been organized for guests who find exploring the acropolis of ancient Pergamum too difficult. Touring the Asclepion is on even ground.

Depart the pier via coach for the approximate thirty minute drive to the modern town of Bergama located at the foot of the Pergamum acropolis. Proceed with a guided walk of the Asclepion.

The Asclepion

Below the acropolis, spread out on level ground, are the ruins of antiquity's first complete health spa and healing center. A 30-minute walking tour of the site includes the Sacred Way, Sacred Well and the Serpent Altar, the design of which was the symbol of Asclepius (god of medicine). The Asclepion's fame was mainly due to Galen, one of the greatest physicians of ancient times. Under his influence, the medical school at Pergamum became renowned, and his work presented the basis for all Western medicine well into the 1500s.

Leaving the site, you will head to the center of Bergama.

Archaeological Museum

Located on the town's main street, the museum houses a large collection of material from the Stone Age to Byzantine times as well as an ethnographic department. Following a brief visit, take a short drive through Bergama's busy streets to the Red Courtyard.

Red Courtyard

The massive brick-built ruins once belonged to the Temple of Serapis, originally built by Emperor Hadrian and converted in Byzantine times into a church dedicated to the apostle John. The building, also known as Red Basilica, takes its name from the red brick walls. After the destruction by the Arabs in the early 8th century, a smaller church was built within the ruins.

After your visit there is some free time to explore the Bergama town center before starting the return drive to Dikili.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking on even ground. It is suitable for guests with limited mobility and those who utilize a wheelchair who must be able to transfer from the chair to the coach via steps. Sturdy walking shoes, a hat and sunscreen are recommended.
