Joseph Nicolosi is an internationally recognized professional expert on therapies that promote normal heterosexual adjustment. He is known for his long-standing leadership in a key professional association that applies scientific findings to psychosexual adjustment. But his breadth of technical scientific knowledge is combined with years of extensive clinical experience helping everyday people. This combination has enabled the authors to explain psychological research findings to parents in a very practical way. Their book provides clear guidance on what parents can do to promote their childx92s sexual adjustment. George A. His book offers practical advice and a clear-eyed perspective on the antecedents of homosexuality. I wish every parent would read it, especially those who have reason to be concerned about their sons. Its purpose is not to condemn but to educate and encourage moms and dads. Dr. James Dobson, President, Focus on the Family, quoted in Bringing up Boys Practical Advice and Encouragement for Those Shaping the Next Generation of Men In his latest book, A Parentx92s Guide to Preventing Homosexuality, based on his many years of specialization, Joseph Nicolosi has translated the vocabulary of research science into plain English, easily understandable to the lay public. Though the book is primarily oriented to the needs of dads and moms concerned about a childx92s gender development, it is also a guide for good parenting in general. In well-described, clear accounts of his clinical sessions and discussions of the theories he does and does not support, Nicolosi has contributed a most valuable addition to the sexuality literature. More important, it should prove invaluable to all those concerned with child rearing, development and education. Toby B. I believe it is imperative that at the very first signs of deviance parents take themselves to a psychiatrist knowledgeable about this problem and make every effort to become aware of what may be damaging in their relationships with the child in question. I commend it as a primer in infant and child rearing for all parents concerned with the appropriate sexual orientation of their growing children. It offers insights into the parent-child conflicts and personality mismatches that can set the stage for same-sex attractions. Nicolosi's use of parents' diaries in describing successes, struggles and even failure provides down-to-earth, practical advice for addressing prevention at the root level. The understanding that can be gained from this book will go a very long way toward eliminating pain and frustration in families while defining the healthy nurturing that is so essential to reinforcing every child's unique personality and sexual identity. Don Schmierer, author, An Ounce of Prevention and Whatx92s a Father to Do Facing Parentsx92 Tough Issues This book meets a great need. It is sound scientifically, countering the abundant misinformation on the subject of homosexuality with which the public is currently inundated. What it provides that no parent can find in any library, however, is what to do when one's own child seems to be developing in a homosexual direction. Joseph Nicolosi draws upon many years of clinical experience to offer parents clear guidelines on evaluating and then reacting constructively to the situation. The authors' points are practical and down-to-earth but always respectful of parents in their struggle to help their children. I believe this book will become a classic in the literature that parents will consult far into the future. It may be an eye-opener to many in the mental health professions as well. Johanna Krout Tabin, Ph.D., ABPP, board and faculty member of the Chicago Center for Psychoanalysis, and former chief psychologist, Chicago Psychological Institute The Nicolosis have written a groundbreaking book. The authors challenge the American Psychological Association, rightly, on their narrow, totalitarian attitude about homosexuality. The authors make an excellent case that a significant number of homosexuals develop their identity from defective parenting, and that many such homosexuals later wish to change their orientation.

Bennett Advocates of “reparative therapy” employ a modified version of Judith Butler’s “normative heterosex- uality” discourse to “cure” gays and lesbians. Coupling Butler with a “coming out of homosexuality” personal narrative, reorientation texts such as Love Won Out construct a ubiquitous foundation for sexual identity and collective experience. At the text’s conclusion, a tension is produced between a constitutive conception of identity and a more traditional notion of self, grounded in a secured ontological base.     Expressive Ends: Understanding Conversion Therapy Bans* MARIE-AMÉLIE GEORGE** Abstract LGBT rights groups have recently made bans on conversion ther- apy, a practice intended to reduce or eliminate a person’s same-sex sexual attractions, a primary piece of their legislative agenda. However, the stat- utes only apply to licensed mental health professionals, even though most conversion therapy is practiced by religious counselors and lay ministers. Conversion therapy bans thus present a striking legal question: Why have LGBT rights advocates expended so much effort and political capital on laws that do not reach conversion therapy’s primary providers? Based on archival research and original interviews, this Article argues that the bans are significant because of their expressive function, rather than their prescriptive effects. The laws’ proponents are using the statutes to create a social norm against conversion therapy writ large, thus broadening the bans’ reach to the religious practitioners the law cannot directly regulate. LGBT rights groups are also extending the bans’ expressive message to support the argument that sexual orientation is immutable and to reverse a historical narrative that cast gays and lesbians as dangerous to children. These related claims have been central to gay rights efforts for much of the twentieth century and continue to shape LGBT rights battles.     Testimony of Quinnipiac University School of Law Civil Justice Clinic In Support of Proposed House Bill 6695 Public Health Committee March 7, 2017 The Quinnipiac University School of Law Civil Justice Clinic provides free legal services to low-income people and advocates for policy reforms that benefit low-income and underrepresented groups. The Clinic supports Proposed House Bill 6695, An Act Concerning the Protection of Youth from Conversion Therapy, which would prohibit any licensed professional from engaging in “conversion therapy”—that is, any practices or treatments that seek to change an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity1—with a person under the age of eighteen. Same-sex orientation is not an illness.2 Nor is gender nonconformity—that is, having a gender identity that does not align with one’s assigned sex at birth.3 So-called “therapy” for non- existent medical conditions is not therapy at all—it is fraud.4 It simply does not work.5 This fraud is especially pernicious, moreover, because it does real harm. At its essence, it teaches vulnerable people to hate themselves, and vulnerable people who hate themselves may do desperate things. Some young people who have undergone conversion therapy have attempted to hurt or kill themselves.6 Some have died.7 Not surprisingly, both the medical and legal communities have taken a strong stance against conversion therapy, as have five states and the District of Columbia, which passed legislation banning the practice on minors.8 We urge this Committee to follow their lead and approve Proposed House Bill 6695.     Are Sexual Orientation Change Efforts (SOCE) Effective? Are They Harmful? What the Evidence Shows Peter Sprigg EXECUTIVE SUMMARY* “Sexual orientation change efforts” (or SOCE) are efforts to help people with unwanted same-sex sexual attractions overcome those attractions and/or abstain from homosexual behavior. SOCE may include professional therapy or less formal (often religious) counseling. At the urging of LGBT activists, some states have enacted or are considering legal restrictions upon the practice of SOCE. Critics of SOCE make two claims—that it is ineffective, and that it is harmful. This paper examines evidence for those claims, but first we must define terms. “Sexual orientation” is an umbrella term which may refer to one or a combination of three components—sexual attractions, sexual behavior, or sexual self-identification. “Effective” SOCE is therapy or counseling that results in any significant reduction in homosexual attractions or behaviors, or increase in heterosexual attractions. “Harm” as a general consequence of SOCE can only be proven if harms exceed benefits, and negative indicators after SOCE exceed negative indicators without therapy, after “gay-affirming” therapy, or after other therapies. Recent studies and surveys are summarized here, in reverse chronological order. July 23, 2018 – Santero, Whitehead, and Ballesteros, The Linacre Quarterly1 In a survey of 125 men who had undergone SOCE, “68 percent self-reported some to much reduction in their same-sex attraction and behavior and also an increase in their opposite-sex attraction and behavior.” Clients experienced positive impacts in the areas of self-esteem, social functioning, self-harm, suicidality, and substance abuse. “The hypothesis of ineffectiveness of SOCE is rejected” and “the hypothesis that harm predominates is rejected strongly.” 2017 – Black, First Stone Ministries Effectiveness Survey2 This Christian ministry, focused on “overcoming all forms of sexual brokenness including homosexuality,” surveyed 185 former clients.

Robinson and Sue Spivey Received: 1 January 2017; Accepted: 18 May 2017; Published: 27 May 2017 Abstract: In this article, I situate the practice of sexual orientation conversion efforts (SOCE), sometimes known as conversion or reparative therapy, within historical, cultural, religious and political attitudes to non-heterosexuality. Using documentary analysis, I investigate the contemporary resistance of two socially conservative organizations: National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH) (US) and Core Issues Trust (UK), to legal and professional regulation of the sexual orientation change efforts (SOCE) which they advocate. A number of themes emerged from the various documentation. The most convincing of these themes is a claim that to provide SOCE is to respect client’s autonomy rights to diminish unwanted sexual attraction, and to live in accordance with the moral principles that they value. I demonstrate that neither NARTH nor Core Issues Trust are consistent in their regard for client autonomy. I suggest that the most plausible reason for these organizations’ emphasis on autonomy and other secular tropes, such as scientific proof and progressive language, is that they provide a smokescreen for conservative Christian values. If we value a world of LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans) rights and recognition, we must counter this backlash against sexual and social justice.
