Your City, Your Club. 3 The Sounding Board On behalf of all at FORAS and Cork City FC we extend a warm welcome to the players, management, directors and supporters of Rovers.

Pat Lyons, Chairman In a week that has seen the senior team go top of the Premier Division we want to acknowledge the magnificent achievement of Stuart Ashton and Paul Bowdren in guiding our Under 19s to the national Elite Division title for the third consecutive year. The U19s received the well deserved acclaim of the Shed and indeed the entire support at The ‘Cross when they were introduced along with John Kennedy’s title John Kennedy, Vice-Chairman winning group from the St. Patrick’s Day Parade at half time in the top of the table clash against Rovers. Paul Dunton and Alan Mooney who are a key part of the coaching staff in Cork City’s youth set up have ably supported Stuart and Paul in the success of the last three seasons. Bernard O’Donovan manages the managers, coaches and players and ensures that all boxes are ticked and he has done so successfully for many years now. Darren O’Keeffe, Secretary Paul and Stuart were honoured at the Southside & District Sports Awards 2014 lunch in the Cork International Airport Hotel, when they were announced as the winners for March. The Board of Cork City are really appreciative of the work done and the success achieved by our U19s and we are especially pleased that Paul and Stuart continue Wyon Stansfeld, Treasurer to supply the senior team with a steady stream of exceptional youngsters. In re - cent times Danny Morrissey, Andy O’Connell, Rob Lehane, Garry Buckley, John Kavanagh, Brian Lenihan and Jason Forde have all made the transition to the sen - ior team squad and indeed some of them have become fixtures in the first eleven. At Cork City, since FORAS took control of the club, we have a tradition of provid - ing educational opportunities for our youth teams through scholarship schemes Erika Ni Thuama ,Board Member funded by FORAS. In the past two seasons we have established a fantastic partner - ship with UCC and Mardyke Arena whereby scholarships are provided to UCC for players from Cork City teams. In addition to the educational benefits of this part - nership the club teams have the use of the Mardyke Arena for strength and condi - tioning, physical assessment and rehab work that has, we believe, contributed in no small way to the success of our teams on the field. We believe that those U19s who do not immediately make the breakthrough to Collin Power, Board Member the senior team should have an outlet in which they can continue to play for Cork City as they hone their skills and improve their physical fitness. In Connacht, for example, the Connaught Senior League is expected to commence this month and it will have teams from Town, Sligo Rovers, , Mervue United, Devon and NUIG.* In this league, four non-amateur players will be al - lowed to play on each team, which enables senior squad members from the clubs to participate. This initiative allows those players who are no longer eligible to Mick Ring, Board Member play at U19 level to continue their development against quality opposition. We must strive to provide the same type of arena for our players whether they are es - tablished senior players recovering from injury, squad players needing game time or young players no longer eligible for our U19s. From all on the Board, a warm welcome and enjoy the game!

Alan Mooney, Board Member *: Thanks to Athlone Town’s programme, All Tangled Up in Blue & Black, for the information on the Connaught league.

Your City, Your Club. 7 8 A Message From Our Premier Club Partner What a night last Friday night was at The ‘Cross! I think it will live long in the memory for all those who were present. I can't remember the last time I saw so many City supporters inside the ground a full forty-five minutes before kick-off.

From the first whistle, the famous old ground was rocking, as the noise seemed to drive the players on. Even our own JC on the sideline was all action; as he ducked, dived, cajoled, and encouraged his charges from the kick-off. There's nothing to beat a bit of passion on the sideline, and the fans, no doubt, take their lead from that. It was also great to see the Under 19s getting recognition for their amazing achievement during the half-time break too Sligo are the visitors tonight, and have experienced an unexpectedly rocky start to the current cam - paign. I have no doubt that if City fans get behind the team like we did last Friday, we can again look forward to going home happy come 9.30 tonight. The Clonakilty team will again be in attendance tonight, and hopefully some of you will get the ap - petising scents from our cooking stall, and we will endeavour to get to you with some tasty bites. We've been doing a lot of work lately on developing new markets, and are hopeful of opening a new sales channel with the United Arab Emirates next week. And so, let’s get that noise going again, and drive the team onto another three points. Your City, Your Club. 353 36 Corky’s Corner

What a season we’re having so far! Life in the top half of the table is sweet, being top is sweeter. Obvi- ously the focus is staying in the race for the title and being top on the last day of the season. There’s a long road to travel yet but if we’re top at the end of a busy month, we will be in control of our own des- tiny.

Last week The ‘Cross was absolutely rocking with the City fans packed into all the corners of the stadium. The noise was unreal! Let’s keep it up because it gives us a massive advantage on the pitch. We need every last one of you to scream, shout, roar, and sing at the top of your voices to inspire the players on the pitch to victory. At half-time last week you would have witnessed quite a unique event for any stadium in the world: a team parading a trophy around the pitch for the third season in a row! Our City Under 19s were magnifi - cent throughout the 2013-14 season and secured their third Elite Division trophy in a row on the last day of their season. Bringing silverware back to the City fans is what this game is all about. At the end of their celebration on the pitch, they took themselves up into The Shed where most of the players watched from when they were growing up. Massive respect to each and every one of them, and long may their success keep going. Along with that trophy comes a lot more of course. Those players will be looking to join the senior team like the previous Under 19s before them. They will be looking to play as winners in the senior team too. Success breeds success, and it really is looking like the former Under 19s in the current senior squad are inspiring us on to a senior title victory for the first time in a few years. As more and more of our Under 19s progress up the ranks, I think it’s safe to say that more trophies will be heading up into The ‘Shed in the near future. The management team also deserve a lot of praise. Each and every one of the staff that help to get a team out on to the pitch during the season provides the inspiration that slogging out ninety minutes in every conceivable type of weather, is worth it. They help not just in putting the City crest on each player’s shirt, but in forging the City name into their soul. Congratulations to everyone involved in the title, I’m already looking forward to seeing four in a row! No pressure! Happy birthday to Season Ticket holders, Niall Mullane and Kieran Walsh, both of whom celebrate on the 17th April. Niall moves into his teens, while Kieran will be enjoying his 12th birthday just before our game against Drogheda United. Enjoy tonight’s game lads! If you have any pictures, jokes, stories, or any news at all that you would like to share, please send it in to me at [email protected], or snail-mail to Cork City FC, , Curraheen, Cork. You can also share things on my Facebook page, where you will find me by searching for Corky The Cheetah, or even tweet me @corkythecheetah. Until next time, stay cool.
