A vital part of any softball program’s success is an in- tense, year-round strength and conditioning program. Louisville’s philosophy behind its strength and conditioning programs is simple - if an athlete works hard during the off- season, becoming physically prepared for the season, prac- tice will be more productive and allow the athlete to focus on skill development. Led by strength and conditioning coach Wendy Wormal, the program provides the student- athlete with everything that is necessary to ensure that they are able to compete to the best of their ability. Although the title suggests solely strength and condition- ing, there is a heavy emphasis on speed training. Other con- centrated areas include plyometrics, which helps the athlete with power and explosiveness. Agility is another aspect of the strength and conditioning regimen, as are stretching and abdominal training. With Coach Wormal and her assistants working with the softball team, the athletes will not get a direct, hands-on ap- proach that will increase their chances for success, they made program that can benefit that particular athlete and the needs of the team as well. Injuries are a part of sports - they come with every as- pect of the game. Dealing with athletic injuries falls into the capable hands of the University of Louisville Sports Medicine Staff. The Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Louisville is a team of health care professionals dedicated to athlete care, research and education. Located in state-of-the-art facilities at Cardinal Park, the department features a sophisticated array of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. U of L has entered into a unique partnership with Jewish Hospital and Frazier Rehab, giving access of their facilities and medical personnel to our ath- letes in a manner unmatched by any other such agreement. The philosophy of the sports medicine staff is twofold; to help prevent injuries as much as possible through effective preventative programs, and to facilitate an effective rehabili- tation program after an injury. In all cases, the ultimate well- being of each individual is considered the top priority. Integration of the sports medicine staff into all aspects of year-round nutrition, cardiovascular conditioning, psychologi- cal preparation and visual training give the University of Lou- isville intercollegiate sports teams the competitive edge. Re- search conducted by the staff and associated departments keep U of L coaches and athletes on the cutting edge of inno- vation. In addition, the Sports Medicine staff routinely par- ticipates in regional and national meetings presented in the sports medicine field. Sports Medicine
