Become A Kid Again It’s Teddy Bear Day National Teddy Bear Day is observed annually on September 9th. We have all had a special cuddly teddy as a child. Some of us still have our teddy bear from our childhood. Whether or not you still have your childhood teddy, today is the perfect day to celebrate your childhood friend! The teddy bear is one of the most popular toys for children, and holds a special place in many adults hearts, too. This lovable stuffed animal has a day all of its own, Teddy Bear Day. It gives a chance for people to get teddy out of the cupboard and make him the center of attention. In 1902, American President Theodore Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear cub while hunting in Mississippi. This incident made national news. Clifford Berryman published a cartoon of the event in the Washington Post on November 16th, 1902. The caricature became an instant classic. The Berryman cartoon of Teddy Roosevelt and the cub inspired New York store owner Morris Michtom to create a new toy. Morris Michtom wrote President Roosevelt to ask permission to name the new toy a “Teddy Bear”. It’s an ideal time to get together with others for a teddy bear’s favorite activity, having a picnic, as immortalized in the classic song, ‘Teddy Bear’s Picnic.’ This was written in 1907, shortly after teddy bears were first manufactured in Europe and America. The American toy bears were named Teddy, in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt, who had refused to shoot a small captured bear on a hunting trip. Some early bears by well known names such as Steiff or Gund are rare and much sought after by enthusiasts. Many teddy bears have become famous over the years, including Paddington Bear, Rupert Bear, Pudsey Bear and, of course, Winnie the Pooh..

The award-winning museum was opened by self- confessed teddy bear enthusiast and well known broadcaster Gyles Brandreth and his wife Michele, on 4th July 1988. Since then, this popular little museum has gone from strength to strength in one of England’s most celebrated towns. Stratford-upon-Avon attracts five million tourists annually and visitors to the Teddy Bear Museum have ranged from royalty to Tony Blair’s bear, Lynton, who recently spent his summer holidays at the Museum. The collection, personally put together by Brandreth, numbers a thousand bears and related items. It is to be sold as a going concern, along with the Tudor building (once the property of King Henry VIII) that has been its home for the last 18 years. “The Museum has come of age and it’s now time for us to find new owners for the museum and its unique collection. Our children are all grown-up and my work commitments mean that I simply don’t have the time to give it the care and attention it deserves. Rupert – an innovative literary genre Ewen Mackenzie-Bowie ICL Graduate Business School Abstract Rupert first appeared in the Daily Express newspaper in 1920 and has continued uninterrupted for nearly a hundred years, mostly as a daily two-picture strip, subsequently compiled into a story and then, with three or four other stories and a handful of puzzles and origami models, an annual. From 1935, under the hand of Alfred Bestall, the Rupert Annual develops into an innovative literary genre, in that it operates at different levels of sophistication in narrative technique, tone and form, and presents a range of startlingly imaginative concepts and inventions. In this paper I shall recount the effect of Bestall’s appointment by the Daily Express, how his Rupert is innovative, how it works for both sophisticated and unsophisticated readers, and suggest why such a concept, so apparently old fashioned, has continued to succeed with little change for nearly a hundred years. The paper should be of value to students of children’s literature and graphic novels and social historians of the 20th century. Ewen Mackenzie-Bowie has a Master’s in Children’s Literature from the University of Surrey and a BA (Hons) from the University of Stirling. He has had a paper on the poetry of Richard Edwards published in The Journal of Children’s Literature Studies (UK) and papers on children’s literature in the previous two editions of the ICL Journal. He has published two illustrated books, Superpuffin and Superpuffin and the Dinosaurs, and had his Master’s thesis on The Wolf in Children’s Literature published by Lambert Academic Publishing in 2011.
