(URS) has conducted a site inspection (S I) of the Nabesn:a Mine (Nabesna) site located at Milepost 46 on the Nabesna/Slana Road, Nabesna, Alaska. This SI was conducted under the authority of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980, as amended by the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 19S6 (SARA). The SI process is intended to (1) document a threat or potential threat to public health or the environment posed by a site; (2) identify if a potential emergency situation exists that may require an im mediate _response; (3) document the presence or absence of uncontained or uncontrolled hazardous substances on a site; and (4) confirm site characteristics and area receptor information collected during the preliminary assessment. The SI is in tended to collect sufficient data to enable evaluation of the site's potential for inclusion on the ' National Priorities List (NPL), and, for th ose sites determined to be NPL candidates, establish priorities for additional action. The SI process and this SI do not include extensive or complete site characterization, contaminant fate determination, or quantitative ecological or hu man health risk assessment. Box 200956 Anchorage, Alaska 99520 (907) 333-5639 Site Operator: Site is currently inactive Site Contact: Mr. Kirk Stanley (907) 333-5639 2.2 SITE DESCRIPTION The Nabesna site, which consists of a gold mine, is located in the White Mountains in the northern portion of the Wrangell-Saint Elias National Park and Preserve. This area is located in the southeastern section of Alaska; approximately 300 miles east of Anchorage. Gold mining operations began in the early 1900s and continued until the 1940s. The site is a privately owned, patented mining claim (the Sunshine Lode), which is one of several mining claims in the area owned by the Ptarmigan Company.

    Mount Sanford…errrr, Mount Jarvis. Wait, what?? Mount Who?? It was roughly around Thanksgiving 2016 and the time had come for me to book my next IMG adventure. With two young children at home and no family close by, I had settled into a routine of doing a big climb every other year. This year was a bit different, as I normally book my major climbs around September for an April or May departure the following year. However, due to a Mt. Blackburn (Alaska) trip falling through, I had to book another expedition. In 2015, I was on an IMG team that summitted Mt. Bona from the north side, not the original plan (jot that down – this will become a theme in Alaska), and really enjoyed the solitude, adventure, physical challenge, small team, and lack of schedule the Wrangell & St Elias Mountains had to offer. So, I hopped on IMG’s website, checked out the scheduled Alaskan climb for 2017, which was Mt. Sanford, and peppered George with my typical questions. Everything lined up, so I completed the pile of paperwork (do I really have to sign another waiver?!?), sent in my deposit (still no AMEX, ugh…), set my training schedule, and started Googling trip reports about Mt. Sanford. Little did I know that READING about Mt. Sanford was the closest I would ever get to it! Pulling from my previous Alaskan climbing experience, I was better prepared for this trip than for Mt Bona in 2015. Due to our bush pilot’s inability to safely land us on the south side of Bona two years prior, we flew up, around, and over the mountain and landed on the north side.

The maps were submitted with the State's application. The State filed an amended RDI application for the Nabesna River, dated September 16, 2015, "to include only the submerged lands underlying the Nabesna River from its mouth to the Black Hills (Sec. 25, TI IN, Rl 7E, and CRM). The State withdraws its request for an RDI on the submerged lands underlying the Nabesna River from Sec. 25, Tl IN, R17E, CRM and the river's source at the Nabesna Glacier." 2 Clarifying its letter from September 16, 2015, the State submitted an email on October 16, 2015 stating that "the State withdraws its request for an RDI on the submerged lands underlying the Nabesna River from its confluence with the Cheslina River in Section 35, Tl2N, RI 7E, CRM upstream to the river's source at the Nabesna Glacier." 3 The State bases its application for a disclaimer of interest on the Equal Footing Doctrine, the Submerged Lands Act of May 22, 1953, the Alaska Statehood Act, the Submerged Lands Act of 1988, and any other legally cognizable reason.

FERRIGNO U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY PROFESSIONAL PAPER 1386–K About 5 percent (about 75,000 km2) of Alaska is presently glacierized, including 11 mountain ranges, 1 large island, an island chain, and 1 archipelago. The total number of glaciers in Alaska is estimated at >100,000, including many active and former tidewater glaciers. Glaciers in every mountain range and island group are experiencing significant retreat, thinning, and (or) stagnation, especially those at lower elevations, a process that began by the middle of the 19th century. In southeastern Alaska and western Canada, 205 glaciers have a history of surging; in the same region, at least 53 present and 7 former large ice-dammed lakes have produced jökulhlaups (glacier-outburst floods). Ice-capped Alaska volcanoes also have the potential for jökulhlaups caused by subglacier volcanic and geothermal activity. Satellite remote sensing provides the only practical means of monitoring regional changes in glaciers in response to short- and long-term changes in the maritime and continental climates of Alaska. Geospatial analysis is used to define selected glaciological parameters in the eastern part of the Alaska Range.

The start is Sunday, March 17, 2019 at 10:00 AM, at McCarthy, Alaska. 2. The finish is at mile 96 of the Old Tok Cutoff at the Log Cabin Wilderness Lodge. Summit Consulting Services’ Office is located at mile 83.5 of the new Tok Cutoff Highway at Bartell Creek Bridge. 3. Finish deadline is midnight on Wednesday, March 27, 2019. 4. Minimum age is 18. The event coordinator reserves the right to deem any applicant unqualified. 5. Maximum number of participants is 30. No applications will be accepted after 30 participants have registered. 6. The entry fee is $300 per participant. There is no reduced entry fees designated for students or for other groups of any kind. The $300 entry fee is non-refundable unless the applicant withdraws by Friday, March 2, 2019. 7. Application deadline is Friday, March 2, 2019. 8. There are a couple of options for traveling to the event start in McCarthy. Option # 1 is to rendezvous on Friday, March 15, 2017 at Summit Consulting Services, Inc. at Mile 83.5 of the Tok Cutoff.     SATELLITE IMAGE ATLAS OF GLACIERS OF THE WORLD GLACIERS OF NORTH AMERICA— GLACIERS OF ALASKA By BRUCE F. MOLNIA1 Abstract Glaciers cover about 75,000 km2 of Alaska, about 5 percent of the State. The glaciers are situated on 11 mountain ranges, 1 large island, an island chain, and 1 archipelago and range in elevation from more than 6,000 m to below sea level. Alaska’s glaciers extend geographically from the far southeast at lat 55°19'N., long 130°05'W., about 100 kilometers east of Ketchikan, to the far southwest at Kiska Island at lat 52°05'N., long 177°35'E., in the Aleutian Islands, and as far north as lat 69°20'N., long 143°45'W., in the Brooks Range. During the “Little Ice Age,” Alaska’s glaciers expanded significantly. The total area and vol- ume of glaciers in Alaska continue to decrease, as they have been doing since the 18th century. Of the 153 1:250,000-scale topographic maps that cover the State of Alaska, 63 sheets show glaciers. Although the number of extant glaciers has never been systematically counted and is thus unknown, the total probably is greater than 100,000. Only about 600 glaciers (about 1 per- cent) have been officially named by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN). There are about 60 active and former tidewater glaciers in Alaska. Within the glacierized mountain ranges of southeastern Alaska and western Canada, 205 glaciers (75 percent in Alaska) have a history of surging. In the same region, at least 53 present and 7 former large ice-dammed lakes have pro- duced jökulhlaups (glacier-outburst floods).
