  • Who Was Who in Early Modern Limerick by Alan O'driscoll and Brian Hodkinson
Who Was Who in Early Modern Limerick By Alan O'Driscoll and Brian Hodkinson The following was commenced by Alan O’Driscoll (AOD) while on a work placement in Limerick Museum in the autumn of 2012 and continued by Brian Hodkinson. It is a continuation of the Who was who in medieval Limerick, which can also be found on the Limerick Museum website. It straddles the period c 1540 to c 1700, so some figures may appear in both databases. It is compiled for the most part by using the indexes of the various sources using Limerick as the search term. However, it has been noted that these indexes are often not comprehensive, and so when sources are available online, then a scroll through the text highlighting Limerick has produced entries not in the index. Such scrolling has also found entries where place names are abviously Limerick ones but Limerick does not appear as a word, e.g. in Fiants and CPCRCI. So while I (BJH) like to think it is comprehensive, it may not be. Notes. • Where two similar names are believed to be the same person, the entries are combined. However, many repeated names appear in the same lists (particularly in the Civil Survey). Where this occurs and/or the two persons are listed as coming from a different location, they are separated, even if they are recorded at the same time. There are a great many repeated full names, such as William Bourke, and it has proved practically impossible to be sure of which of these are different people.

ROINN COSANTA. BUREAU OF MILITARY HISTORY, 1913-21. STATEMENT BY WITNESS. DOCUMENT NO. W.S. 1435 Witness Daniel F. O'Shaughnessy, Glebe House, Kilfinane, Co. Limerick. Identity. Volunteer, Kilfinane Company. Subject. I.R.A. activities, County Limerick, 1918-1921. Conditions, if any, Stipulated by Witness. Nil. File No S.1125. FormB.S.M.2 STATEMENT BY DANIEL F. O'SHAUGHNESSY Glebe House, Kilfinane, Co. Limerick The information supplied hereunder was given me by David Clancy, Cush, in 1932, and by other members of the flying column. My personal experiences of the period are also drawn on. The notes taken in 1932 are now principally used for this history as memories were fresher then than now in 1955; death has intervened too frequently. Even Davy Clancy himself has passed away this year and, in my humble opinion, the heroism and hardships endured by these men in their heroic struggle against the Black and Tans and the enemies of their country will never be fully recorded. It was Ireland's finest hour and Homeric in magnitude and intensity. Before I go any further, I must give an appreciation written by my brother, Dr. P.J. O'Shaughnessy, after thedeath of Davy Clancy; it is worthr ecording: Appreciation. As I stood last August talking to this old warrior over old times and old scenes, I knew the end was near, and I wanted to walk with him at the end; but such was not to be. In one flash he filled the whole picture cap turned sideways and all like I saw him one market day with a bonham under his arm, squealing like wad.

  • Index of Placenames of the Desmond Survey
Index of Placenames of the Desmond Survey. The following index contains all the placenames mentioned in the Desmond Survey; see http://www.ucc.ie/celt/published/E580000-001/index.html The index is made for Limerick purposes. No real attempt has been made to identify places in adjacent counties, those entries are marked simply “in Co. Kerry” etc Personal names in the Survey are included in the “Who was who of early modern Limerick” at http://limerick.ie/media/Who%27s who of Early Modern Limerick.pdf These are useful for cross-referencing places; i.e. where a placename is unrecognisable it may be possible to identify a variant of the placename elsewhere in the Survey at another reference for the tenant. While some such cross-referencing has been carried out, I am certain that other instances remain to be identified. In some cases it has been possible to identify the location of placenames that no longer exist, by using the Civil Survey of 1654. If the Desmond Survey gives a parish name, then it is sometimes possible to identify that same name in the Civil Survey and from the mearings given there work out an approximate or even exact location. I have done this on a fairly unsystematic basis so far, so there is great scope for further work here. Another useful tool for helping to identify places, is the index of townland names for Co. Limerick http://limerick.ie/media/Townland Index.pdf I have tried to collect all variant spellings and paragraph references in the one location.
