As a crucial part of the operating room team, Median Surgical Technologist surgical technologists work alongside and in Indiana nurses in a wide variety of procedures from minor $20.69/hour to very complex . A career in surgical technology is fast‐paced, challenging and exciting!

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Surgical Technologists are highly‐skilled members of the surgical team, qualified to provide safe and efficient care to the patient in the operating room. The didactic in Franciscan Health’s Surgical Technology Program consists of courses in  anatomy and physiology,  microbiology,  pharmacology,  medical law and ethics,  surgical techniques and surgical procedures. Closely supervised clinical education is provided in local area .

Surgical technologists perform very technical work underneath a nurse and including:

 preparing the operating room including the sterile field, setting up surgical equipment, supplies and solutions,  preparing, passing, and managing surgical equipment,  managing the sterile field and specimens,  supporting team efforts to prevent foreign‐retained objects.

Program at a Glance

The goal of the Franciscan Surgical Technology program is to prepare competent entry‐level Surgical Technologists in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains in order to meet the local workforce demand.  Approximately 15 months  Hours vary Monday through Friday, 5:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required

Admission Criteria

 Be at least 18 by Sept. 1 of the year starting the program.  Must be able to meet essential requirements of the program: o Stand for more than 5 to 8 hours at a time, o Lift, push or pull 50 pounds.  Graduated from an accredited high school with a recommended overall grade point average of 2.0; or a GED/HSE certificate.  Documentation of previous healthcare experience (including volunteer hours or shadowing hours) is recommended.  Current employees of Franciscan Health will be evaluated for job performance and eligibility for rehire: o no disciplinary action, attendance issues or suspension in the last 12 months, o work part‐time in current department throughout the program to maintain health insurance o for employees only ‐ PTO will be unavailable except during designated break weeks.

Admission is on a competitive basis. Franciscan Health reserves the right to select those applicants who are deemed best qualified for both the program of study and potential employment by Franciscan Health.

Tuition and Fees

Tuition is $6,000 in total for the program or $1,500 per semester.

Textbooks can be purchased at the student’s expense or rented from the program.

Each student will be required to purchase a minimum of two sets of .

Student Learning Outcomes

The goal of the Franciscan Surgical Technology program is to prepare competent entry‐level Surgical Technologists in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains in order to meet the local workforce demand.

In order to meet the program goals, students will be competent in the following domains:

Cognitive Domain: Students will be provided with knowledge in basic science, understanding of aseptic technique and dexterity of surgical skills and professionally developed surgical conscience as required to meet minimum competency by the Association of Surgical Technologist Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology, Sixth Edition for an entry level surgical technologists.

Objectives: 1. Apply knowledge of anatomy, physiology, microbiology and pharmacology to the perioperative patient as it relates to the Mission and Values of Franciscan Health and the role of the surgical technologist. 2. Communicate clearly and effectively with patients, families and staff using proper medical terminology. 3. Maintain an 80% or higher in all surgical technology courses, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and microbiology courses. 4. Successfully complete all didactic program specific requirements as specified in the Association of Surgical Technologists Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology, Sixth Edition for an entry level surgical technologist. 5. Evaluate oneself and classmates by identifying strengths and areas of growth using the standards of the profession. 6. Discuss the importance of continued education, personal growth and professional development and sharing those with others. 7. Apply for, sit and pass the National Certifications examination when eligible.

Psychomotor Domain: The mission and values of our program are to educate professional techniques that will promote the practice of clinical and laboratory skills necessary to work independently. Objectives: 1. Apply the learned scientific principles of aseptic technique. 2. Establish practices in critical thinking and problem solving that indicate the development of surgical conscience. 3. Demonstrate safe practice methods involving, but not limited to, pre‐op, intra‐op and post‐ op preparation of the environments, patient positioning, case knowledge and emergency surgical procedures. 4. Demonstrate the proper sterilization technique of supplies and equipment used in the surgical suite. 5. Demonstrate the observation, second scrub and first scrub roles in the clinical setting as required by the Association of Surgical Technologists Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology, Sixth Edition for an entry level surgical technologists. 6. Actively participate in all surgical specialty areas as assigned. 7. Attain a 90% average in all laboratory practicum courses. 8. Successfully perform all program specific competencies as specified in Association of Surgical Technologists Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology, Sixth Edition for entry level surgical technologists.

Affective Domain: The program will develop surgical technologists who strive to practice to the highest standards of the profession, and who focus on patient safety providing excellent quality of care. 1. Exhibits professionalism, dependability and integrity in all aspects of the profession with knowledge that has been learned within the program. 2. Displays an attitude of empathy and respect for patients, coworkers and facility staff. 3. Values the professional standards and code of ethics of the Association of Surgical Technologists. 4. Demonstrate ethical, legal moral and cultural awareness as it relates to the professionalism of the surgical technologists. 5. Initiates critical thinking in all aspects of the job, especially within direct patient care. 6. Appreciates the need for continuing education and lifelong learning in the field of Surgical Technology.

Program Courses

ANP101 Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology This course covers the human body and principles of the physiology as well as the body systems. Students will gain a better understanding of the organization of the body and the various organs within each system. This course will cover different diseases related to each of the systems. MLE102 Medical Law and Ethics This course is an introduction to the guidelines of medical law and ethics for professionals. Topics include criminal and civil acts, contracts, and negligence. Ethical concepts will be discussed as they relate to the medical profession. , standards of care and employment will be taught while maintaining HIPAA, and other healthcare legislative rulings. COM103 Healthcare Communications This course is prepares the students to work in the healthcare environment by reviewing basic computer skills, journal writing, and email etiquette. This course ties in the fundamentals of Healthy Work Environment, Crucial Conversations, and Team STEPPS. This course includes professional responsibilities, legal and ethical considerations, interpersonal relationships, information resources and communication skills. MED104 Medical Terminology This course covers prefixes, suffixes and root words of medical terms needed to work in the medical field. This course will allow the student to put together word parts to understand their meanings and spelling. This course will cover body systems, basic diagnostic and imaging procedures, and pharmacological terms and approved medical abbreviations. (No prerequisites) Contact hours: 56

SUR110 Surgical Instruments This course provides an in‐depth introduction to surgical instruments. This course will provide a detailed analysis of the similarities and differences between instruments and their usage. The course will also introduce the student to disinfection, decontamination and sterilization. (No prerequisites) Contact hours: 28

SUR111 Perioperative Patient Care This course provides an introduction to the role and responsibilities of the surgical technologist. This course covers an introduction to the healthcare setting, healthcare team members, safety, infection control and pharmacology. This course will cover the stages of life and how to care for patients in each of the stages as well as patients with specific needs related to age and illness. (No prerequisites) Contact hours: 56

SUR112 Introduction to Surgical Technology This course provides introduction to and focuses on operating room environment and covers the furniture, basic supplies and equipment used during surgical cases and will also introduce the student to aseptic technique, gown, gloving and draping. The student will also have the opportunity to observe in the operating room during this class. The course will correlate the impact of microbiology in relation to the practice of sterile technique and infection control in the operative setting. (No prerequisites) Contact hours: 56

SUR113 Introduction to Surgical Technology Lab In a lab setting, the student will prepare the operating room, basic equipment, supplies, and perform daily functions of an operating room team member. This course will provide the students with an introduction to the scrubbed surgical technologist and circulator roles to prepare for the surgical operating room environment. The student will incorporate safety, aseptic technique, and duties of both the scrubbed and circulating technologist during a surgical procedure, following OSHA standards. SUR220 Techniques This course provides an in‐depth introduction of the role and responsibilities of the surgical technologist. This course will cover emergency and all‐hazard preparation as well as pharmacology and in relation the surgical technologist role and responsibilities in the operating room. (Prerequisite: all courses) Contact hours: 16

SUR222 Surgery Techniques Lab The course will review the preparation of the patient, operating room, equipment, and supplies. They will learn to perform the daily functions of an operating room team member. The course will implement all of the didactic and clinical skill by demonstration to prepare for clinical experience in both the sterile and non‐sterile role. (Prerequisite: all courses) Contact hours: 16

SUR233 Surgery Practicum and Lab I This course provides the surgical technology student to correlate basic principles and concepts of classroom lectures to working situations through discussion, exercises, and hands on role‐playing. This course studies general, gynecologic, genitourinary, otolaryngology, oral, maxillary, plastic, ophthalmology procedures. This course covers relevant anatomy, surgical considerations and patient care related topics from the preoperative setting through to postoperative patient care. (Prerequisite: SUR220, SUR222) Contact hours: 180 SUR235 Clinical Experience I This course is designed to provide the surgical technology student experience in a clinical setting, performing the duties of a scrubbed and/or circulating technologist during an assigned surgical procedure. The student will experience scrubbing and circulating on general, gynecologic, genitourinary, otolaryngology, oral, maxillary, plastic, ophthalmology procedures. SUR323 Surgery Practicum and Lab II This course provides the surgical technology student to correlate basic principles and concepts of classroom lectures to working situations through discussion, exercises, and hands on role‐playing. This course studies peripheral vascular, cardiovascular, thoracic, orthopedic, and neurological procedures. This course covers relevant anatomy, surgical considerations and patient care related topics from the preoperative setting through to postoperative patient care (Prerequisite: SUR 233, SUR 235) Contact hours: 84

SUR325 Clinical Experience II This course is designed to provide the surgical technology student experience in a clinical setting, performing the duties of a scrubbed and/or circulating technologist during an assigned surgical procedure. The student will experience scrubbing and circulating with all specialties from SUR 323 as well as peripheral vascular, cardiovascular, thoracic, orthopedic, and neurological procedures. HCP327 Healthcare Professionalism This course prepares the student to transition to the workplace. Professionalism expectation and issues are discussed. During this course the student will receive guidance on resume and cover letter writing. The student will learn important interviewing skills. Review sessions will be held to help prepare the student for the national certification exam. (Prerequisite: SUR233, SUR235) Contact hours: 12

SUR400 Capstone Clinical Experience III

This is an optional work‐based learning experience that enables the student to specialize in particular areas of surgery and further prepare for employment. Opportunities are paid and an application is required. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. (Prerequisite: SUR 323, SUR325, SUR327) Contact Hours: 360‐480

SUR410 CST Exam Review This class will meet once a week during Capstone to prepare for the CST Exam. (Prerequisite: SUR 323, SUR325, SUR327) Contact Hours: 56

Clinical Case Requirements for Graduation: Upon successful completion of the Franciscan Surgical Technology Program, students will have completed the clinical case requirements established by the Association of Surgical Technologist Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology, Sixth Edition. The student must have a minimum of 120 surgical cases:

 30 surgical cases in (20 first scrubs and 10 second scrubs)

 90 surgical cases (60 first scrubs and 30 second scrubs) in specialty surgery: specialties include surgical procedures in orthopedics, , genitourinary, , gynecology, ophthalmic, oral/maxillofacial, plastic & reconstructive, cardiothoracic, peripheral vascular, pediatrics and neurosurgical.
