Recovered paper Germany – Following the hefty August hikes, the German recovered paper market calmed down in September, and prices for sorted mixed papers and board (1.02), supermarket corrugated paper and board (1.04) and sorted graphic paper for deinking (1.11) started to level out.

Several paper mills had set their sights on lower PfR prices, but although collection volumes started to return to normal levels and export demand weakened, supply and demand were pretty balanced, and in most cases August prices were carried over into the following month. However, a change in trend might be on the cards soon, as several mill buyers said they will push for lower prices once full collection volumes are available again in October.

“Export prices are dropping and the available volumes are rising. Where should prices go if not down?” one market insider said, and others shared this view. “Given the current market fundamentals, I’m confident that prices will go down in October,” one of them commented. So far, prices for 1.02 and 1.04 have risen by more than Euro 20/tonne this year, while levels for 1.11 have climbed by some Euro 16.50/tonne. The next edition of PIX Recovered Paper Indexes Germany will be published on November 8, 2016.
