BERSERKER The term Berserker was used among the Ger- manic tribes to describe selected men and wom- en who, with or without the aid of intoxicants, went into a wild frenzy. In this state they felt no pain, no fear and no restraint and fought for their tribe on the front line without regard of their own life. Some of them also wrapped themselves in animal skins and wore fearsome masks, so that a myth soon formed that they possessed the ability to transform themselves into ravenous beasts. This myth of the raging fighter forgetting ev- erything around him also found its way into the Fantasy literature. Here the Berserker actually succeeds in crossing the border into the realm of magic and taking on the shape of an angry mon- ster with razor-sharp claws, a gaping mouth and an insatiable thirst for blood. Leaving behind ev- ery shred of humanity, he knows neither friends nor enemies and fights until nobody else stands on their feet or exhaustion overpowers him. Appearance: The most important part of the Ber- serker’s appearance of is his magic coat, which consists of the complete fur of a wild animal, the prepared animal skull covering his head. The Berserker may decide on the exact species; this

RULES can also be a mythological or self-invented crea- ture. However, it is important that it is a preda- tor, therefore bears, lions, tigers, crocodiles and large snakes are best suited. The other clothes of the Berserker and his body decoration underline his ferocity: Fur, pelt or leather clothing com- bined with long, unkempt hair and garish war painting. Henshin: The Berserker must wear the coat de- ADDITIONAL scribed above. He may inflict a physical wound on himself as part of the Henshin! to receive a SampleFrenzy Token (see below). file

4 Basic Skills Paradigm Shift (passive): The character‘s Spir- itual Axiom changes to 19, unless it was higher before. Qualities: Jumping 3, Running 3, Mega Jump 2, Swimming 2 Padding: 2 Frenzy: While she is transformed, the Berserker gains 1 Frenzy Token for each wound she inflicts to an opponent and for each physical wound sustained (i.e., wounds that are not absorbed by the Padding). At the end of each turn (10 seconds), she must discard 1 Frenzy Token, and when she ends her Henshin!, she discards all re- maining Frenzy Tokens. As long as she has at least 1 Frenzy Token, the following rules apply: • Penalties for wounds suffered and Sty- mied or Very Stymied are ignored. • The Berserker always counts as Very Vul- nerable. • Ranged attacks, as well as any tasks that require calm or concentration suffer a –5 penalty, including the use of spells, mir- acles, and psi powers, unless they are purely destructive in nature and not cast by using items or artifacts.

5 DRUID In the Celtic culture the Druids had the function of scholars, priests and advisors. On top of that, they were occupied with all kinds of arts, based on their knowledge passed on over generations, including alchemy, astronomy and astrology as well as the art of healing. Their comprehen- sive knowledge of how the world worked far surpassed that of their fellow human beings, so that it is not without reason that people attribut- ed them to have „magical“ powers. Today, as we have most of this knowledge at out our fingertips (and mostly don’t appreciate its preciousness as much as the ancient Druids did), we attribute completely different powers to the Druids as mystical figures, from the abil- ity to brew magic potions to the gift of casting a spell on a human being with a single glance. The Freelancer Druid also draws on such powers, but he is aware that these powers arise primari- ly from knowledge, wisdom and a deep under- standing of the world around him—the are the true source of power. Appearance: A Druid likes to wear tradition- al garments made of natural woven fabrics, a wooden staff and a sickle—the hallmark of ev- ery real Druid. But he also doesn’t dismiss the achievements of modern technology, knowing that the search for new knowledge is a flame that will never go out.

Henshin: The Druid must hold his Golden Sick- le in his hand.

Basic Skills Paradigm Shift (passive): The character‘s Spir- itual Axiom changes to 19, unless it was higher before. 6 SAMURAI The word „Samurai“ comes from Japanese and means „to serve“. Samurai are warriors in the service of their lord, the Daimyo or Shogun, and they follow the „Bushido“, the „way of the war- rior“. This is a strict code whose core statement is that in the life of the Samurai there is only service. Everything else is of lesser importance, even one‘s own life. Going to his death for his lord is therefore the most honorable act a Samu- rai can perform. Of course, the Samurai and his concept of honor are an ideal that a normal person wouldn‘t be able to follow uncompromising- ly, but as an ideal they are so strong that they have spread all over the world and triggered a fascination that is hard to escape. In Fantasy literature, on the other hand, the Sa- murai remains a marginal phenomenon, apart from Japanese fantasy, in which he has a sim- ilar status to that of a Knight of the Round Ta- ble in Western nations. In these stories, the Sa- murai is often a „ronin“: an abandoned loner, or „Freelancer“, who puts honor above his life and strives for the perfect mastery in the art of sword fighting. Appearance: Typical elements of the Samurai’s appearance are his hairstyle and his clothes in the style of the Japanese Middle Ages, from the simple garments of a roaming, dueling ronin, who wants to ascend by his own strength to be- come a sword master, the noble kimono of a re- spected strategist up to the pompous armor of a warlord. Henshin: To carry out the transformation, the Samurai needs a katana made and blessed in Japan according to strict Shinto rituals. For the Henshin! he must pull the weapon out of its sheath and stand in a fighting posture. Codex: The Samurai never attacks an opponent who has already been attacked by another fight- er ofSample her own side (but she may use her Riposte file against such an opponent, see below).
