THE WORLD’S LEADING HUMAN ENDURANCE CHALLENGE THE ONLY ROWING RACE ACROSS THE PACIFIC GREAT PACIFIC RACE 2016 4th June 2016, Monterey, ,

The biennial Great Pacific Race is the biggest rowing challenge on the planet – a 2,400-mile competitive row across the Pacific Ocean from California to Hawaii!

2,400 MILES 60 CREW - FROM 10 COUNTRIES 30 + DAYS 20 BOATS 1 EPIC JOURNEY MONTEREY CALIFORNIA Great Pacific Race 2016 is the only human powered race across the Pacific Ocean. Row-boats of two and four crew compete against others from around the world in an epic journey on the world’s largest ocean from Monterey, California to Waikiki, Hawaii.

The shortest route between the start and finish is 2,400 miles but winds, waves, current and less than perfect steering mean that each boat will actually cover closer to 3,000 miles!

The world’s leading human endurance challenge is expected to take those racing between 30 and 80 days depending on the number of people in the crew, the quality of their preparation and the weather conditions they encounter on route. Each boat is only moved by the muscle of the crew pulling on the oars and carries no HONOLULU sails or engines.

Following the event a 1-hour documentary will HAWAII be aired on a number of channels across the globe.

CREW Success in the Great Pacific Race 2016 will require a combination of skills, physical ability and mental toughness. Combined with willpower and determination, participants can achieve the unbelievable task of rowing the Pacific and being the fastest and amongst first to do so.

During the race, the crews are not allowed to accept assistance and so must carry everything they might need for the duration of the challenge, however support vessels shadow the rowers providing assistance if necessary. With crews able to choose their own route it is unlikely that any of the crews will see each other after the first few hours at the oars. THE BOATS There are two classes of ocean row-boats approved by Great Pacific Race 2016 and recognised by the Ocean Rowing Society, who adjudicate Guinness World Records - Classic Class and Open Class. The table below gives an overview of the key differences.

CLASSIC CLASS OPEN CLASS V-shaped hull Flat bottomed hull Accommodation in stern cabin Accommodation in bow cabin Uses hull shape and rudder for directional stability Uses centreboard and rudder for directional stability Less windage (gets blown by the wind less) Greater windage (gets blown by the wind more) More protection for crew from following seas Less protection for crew from following seas More stable Less stable Manufacturers - Sea Sabre & Rossiters Manufacturer - Rannoch

These differences mean that the boat speeds are not comparable and the two boat designs cannot be fairly raced against each other and therefore compete in different classes.

Ocean row-boats are ruggedly designed and built from marine grade plywood, glass or carbon fibre and other composite materials. They are able to withstand the worst weather that the ocean can throw at them and keep the crew safe.

All boats in the Great Pacific Race 2016 are designed to self-right if they capsize and each boat has undergone a capsize test to ensure that this design feature is operational. Each boat has a water-tight cabin at each end with the rowing cockpit in the middle.

Generally one cabin is used for storage and the other as the accommodation, where the crew can rest when they are not rowing.

TESTIMONIALS

“Massive congratulations for running such an awesome race that I’m going to remember for the rest of my life.” Mark Gleeson – Team NOMAN – Great Pacific Race 2014

and New Ocean Wave provided an experience for us beyond even our highest expectations. His attention to detail, appreciation for safety, and responsiveness to the various needs of individual crew-members made the journey across the Mediterranean a life-changing one. No matter how fierce conditions were, at all times we felt like we were in great hands. I am greatly looking forward to a long partnership with New Ocean Wave in the years to come.” Tristan Almada – Board Member of HPV and Anal Cancer Foundation and NOMAN member of Team Isabel.

“Sarah and I were privileged to work with Chris and his dedicated New Ocean Wave team as part of the NOMAN is an Island: Row to end HPV campaign. Chris and New Ocean Wave were incredibly organized, tenacious and from the outset nothing was ever too small a question; even when supporting the crews during some tough moments – they were still in regular contact understanding our function could only be achieved with good communication from them. It has been a pleasure to work with Chris and his dedicated team (without whom NOMAN could not have happened).” Sarah Street and Gabby Brunton, Street & Co PR and Media
