June theatre 6 A number of you have expressed to the staff how much you enjoy the films that are screened at July films 8 Hawkins Theatre and have asked whether they remain here. We are pleased to announce that July theatre 13 Auckland Council has committed to ensuring that films will be screened here well into the future by August Films 14 investing in new digital cinema equipment, which is becoming the industry ‘norm’.

August Theatre 18 For those that have recently attended our bi-monthly comedy club, Laugh Out Loud - Theatre information 20 Papakura, you will be aware just how popular these nights have become. We realise that the bar What’s on at a glance 22 during the interval sometimes has long queues, which is something we are keen to address, and so for the June edition of Laugh Out Loud we will be trialling pre-ordered interval drinks. Basically, you pre-purchase your interval drinks before the show starts and they will be ready for collection at the interval.

We’re pleased to see that the Hawkins Youth Theatre Company continues to be very popular and we can announce that the dates of this year’s annual production will be Friday 4 to Sunday 6 October 2013. We are also close to confirming the title of the production so keep an eye on Hawkins Youth Theatre Company’s facebook page or the Hawkins Theatre website for further details as they are announced.

Kon Tiki Rating: M 125 minutes

On the 28 April1947, Thor Heyerdahl leaves his wife and children behind to cross the Pacific Ocean on a balsa wood raft called ‘Kon-Tiki’, with five inexperienced crew members. The Norwegian anthropologist and adventurer travels on the raft from Peru to Polynesia to prove that people from South America settled in Polynesia instead of people from Asia, as was believed at the time. The crew did not pack any modern technology on board of the raft, except for a simple radio, and were companied by only each other and a parrot. With the world media watching, the crew navigates the Kon-Tiki across the Pacific Ocean using the stars and being driven by the currents and wind.

While taking on thunder storms, sharks and the dangers of the wide open sea, it’s six brave men against nature trying to get the Kon-Tiki across to the Polynesian shore. After gambling all he has, including his marriage, Heyerdahl is determined to succeed. Thor Heyerdahl’s documentary over the journey won an Oscar in 1951 and is the only Norwegian movie to have won an Oscar to date. The book Heyerdahl wrote about the Kon-Tiki expedition was translated into 70 languages and has sold over 50 million copies over the entire world.

Thursday 08 and Monday 19 August 2013 In advance: Adults $8, concessions $6 12.30pm and 7.30pm On door: Adults $11, concessions $9 The Look of Love Rating: M 102 minutes After Tristam Shandy and The Trip, Michael Winterbottom and Steve Coogan team up once more to chronicle the outrageous true story of Paul Raymond; a legendary gentleman’s club owner, erotic publisher, and one-time richest man in Britain.

With an eye for business opportunities and a taste for beautiful women, Paul Raymond (Coogan), realised early on that sex sells. Starting his career with a mind-reading act, Raymond soon realised that the audience were more interested in watching his beautiful assistant, and that they liked it even more if she was topless. So in 1958 he opened a gentlemen’s nightclub that was so hot no man could resist it. A huge success, it became the cornerstone of Raymond’s Soho empire.

Raymond’s personal life was as scandalous as his shows. His marriage to Jean Bradley (Anna Friel), a nude dancer, choreographer, business partner, and mother of his children, fell apart when he met Fiona Richmond (Tamsin Egerton), a glamour model who became a pin-up star of his shows and magazines. The love of his life, however, was his daughter Debbie (Imogen Poots), who followed in his footsteps into a world of excess and eventually tragedy.

The Look of Love is a modern day King Midas story; Raymond enjoyed immense wealth and all the excesses that swinging Soho had to offer, but ultimately at the cost of all those close to him.
