SOLIDARITY SHABBAT PACHIM KETANIM FROM RABBI MARKOWITZ: In Honor of Parshat Bereishit In partnership with Jewish Federation and Every Friday night, we read the verse from our Parsha,”VaYechal Elokim Bayom Hashvii- Hashem finished creating the in solidarity with shuls around the country, world on the 7th day.” What does the Torah mean that Hashem finished ON the seventh day? Isn’t the whole idea of Shab- we encourage all our members, men and bos that HaShem didn’t create anything on the seventh day? Rashi gives two answers to this question. 1. HaShem stopped women, to come to shul this Shabbat at the exact moment that the seventh day began. Humans cannot do that and therefore, we must stop a few minutes be- fore.2. Rashi shares a second answers, “Baah Shabbos baah menucha- when Shabbos come, rest comes with it.” What morning, as a memorial to the tragedy in does Rashi mean by this? The Pardes Yosef answers: When the Mishna, lists the melachos that are prohibited on Shabbos, Pittsburgh just one year ago. Try to encour- it lists them as 40 minus one. Just say 39! He posits that the 40th “melacha” is menucha-rest. There are 39 melachos that are th age unaffiliated friends and neighbors to prohibited and a 40 that is encouraged. HaShem concluded creation on the day 7, but not through ordinary creation, rather through meneucha. In fact, recent research has shown that rest is an important component to creativity. If our brains don’t come as well! Rabbi Markowitz will make shut down for a certain amount of time, they operate at levels that stymie our creativity. Shabbos is a gift that allows us to not special mention of this memorial occasion only recharge, but to be “creative” in areas that we may not take advantage of the rest of the week: learning Torah, spending during services. time with family and having meaningful conversations.
