If ever one topic was more overrated and overpublicized, it would have to be the Magnet schools. Everywhere you look in all forms of the media, you are constantly being bombarded by some thing that a wonderful Magnet student has done. Take for example, a recent article in the Shreveport Times featuring Magnet school fashions. Why center it around one par ticular school? Are they the Shreveport-style vogue trendsetters for high school students? Just a visit to the Shreve campus would be enough to show anyone that Gators are also very fashion con cious. Nike, Calvin Klein, Lee, Polo, Gloria Vanderbuilt, IZOD, and Tretron; yes , all of these labels can be found in Gatorland, too. Granted, the Magnet school does have some outstanding points that should be recognized, such as their fine Debate Team that has won numerous awards, and a commendable fencing club that recently competed in Florida, and this is all well and good. However, Shreve and other schools have many fine qualities that set them apart from the rest, but which have been buried lately under mounds of Mustang news by local newspapers and television stations. T here are many outstanding features at Shreve that have been overlooked . For instance, our Drama Club is one that can be compared to neon in the area. Each year they put on professional shows ranging from their recent production of the mystery, " Bad Seed, " to last year's energetic musical "Fiddler on the Roof." Many long, dedicated hours are spent working on each performance and it certainly shows. Scholastic ability at Shreve cannot be overlooked either. Last year there were four National Merit Finalists with 1982 graduates earning over $3000 in scholarships. Gator teachers are also an asset. In two out of the three years presented, the Poor Man's Supper Louis Seiber Educator Brother hood Award went to a Shreve faculty member.

  • Estimated Age Effects in Baseball
ESTIMATED AGE EFFECTS IN BASEBALL By Ray C. Fair October 2005 Revised March 2007 COWLES FOUNDATION DISCUSSION PAPER NO. 1536 COWLES FOUNDATION FOR RESEARCH IN ECONOMICS YALE UNIVERSITY Box 208281 New Haven, Connecticut 06520-8281 http://cowles.econ.yale.edu/ Estimated Age Effects in Baseball Ray C. Fair¤ Revised March 2007 Abstract Age effects in baseball are estimated in this paper using a nonlinear xed- effects regression. The sample consists of all players who have played 10 or more full-time years in the major leagues between 1921 and 2004. Quadratic improvement is assumed up to a peak-performance age, which is estimated, and then quadratic decline after that, where the two quadratics need not be the same. Each player has his own constant term. The results show that aging effects are larger for pitchers than for batters and larger for baseball than for track and eld, running, and swimming events and for chess. There is some evidence that decline rates in baseball have decreased slightly in the more recent period, but they are still generally larger than those for the other events. There are 18 batters out of the sample of 441 whose performances in the second half of their careers noticeably exceed what the model predicts they should have been. All but 3 of these players played from 1990 on. The estimates from the xed-effects regressions can also be used to rank players. This ranking differs from the ranking using lifetime averages because it adjusts for the different ages at which players played. It is in effect an age-adjusted ranking.

You are the Body of Christ Preacher: Rev. Lauren Lorincz Date: January 24, 2016 13:29 “You are the Body of Christ” Pilgrim Church UCC, January 24, 2016, (1 Corinthians 12:12-31a) Third Sunday after Epiphany Let’s go back to Game 6 of the 1986 World Series at Shea Stadium in Queens. The Mets are trailing the Red Sox 5-4 and are one out from finishing an amazing season with a disappointing loss. Mookie Wilson’s at the plate and Red Sox pitcher Bob Stanley throws a wild pitch to bring Kevin Mitchell home. All of a sudden, the Mets and the Sox are tied in the bottom of the 10th inning—and then comes the infamous moment. Wilson has a full count and hits a grounder up the first-base line. Bill Buckner, the veteran first baseman, hobbles to field this ground ball and reaches down too late. The ball bounces between his legs and rolls right behind him. Ray Knight rounds third base for the Mets and heads home—leaping with joy. The Mets tie the series at three games apiece and go on to win the 1986 World Series. The scapegoat for Boston sports fans became Bill Buckner. Some of you may be having flashbacks of anger, disappointment, heart palpitations, you name it just by hearing his name. And I understand—Cleveland fans have The Drive, The Fumble, and Red Right 88. What’s fascinating is when Red Sox fans recall the missed opportunities of the past, people don’t seem to speak as much about Bob Stanley’s wild pitch which brought in the runner on third before Mookie Wilson even hit that grounder to Bill Buckner.
