Indian Creek Members new friends on both sides of the aisle during our efforts to obtain broad support for this monthly Monday musings important bill. >> Zoom video conference meeting << That said, there are some undeniable truths in the U.S.A.’s current legislative next meeting: landscape. I’m not going to call out specific elected officials in this piece but I would ask • 03 May. – 7 p.m. (PT) A.B.A.T.E. members to take note of the letter beside each person’s name who is from computer or smart phone: sponsoring or voting for legislation that negatively effects motorcyclists. Legislators who actively support U.S. (Tacoma) dismantling the U.S. second amendment and promote nanny state regulations and Passcode: 265523 policies tend to be the same people who vote against BikePAC bills or propose bills that CHECK ON-LINE FOR UPDATES BikePAC strongly opposes. Does this mean that we should actively work to get members of the opposing political party elected to replace those who would vote against us? Not necessarily. Mitch Greenlick (H–33) was my state representatives and neighbor for several decades. I had a long time cordial relationship with representative Greenlick and he was always polite and professional with me. However, up until his last years in Salem, he was pretty much a guaranteed “no” vote for any bill that BikePAC initiated. In fact, in the early 2000’s, he was so antagonistic towards us that I ran against him in the primary of 2004. I ran against this democrat as a long-time democrat myself. You can do this too. Running for political office is a lot easier than most might think. (Of course winning an election is something else again.) There are 90 legislators down in Salem and about half of them are at least lukewarm supporters of motorcycling issues. If less than 10% of our membership ran for elected office in 2022 and won, it would be close to 100% support for anything motorcycle ( continued on next page ) May 2021 – A.B.A.T.E. of Oregon, Inc. state newspaper page 17 Legislative Director ( continued from previous page ) related down there! You have six months or so to get your ducks in a row, so to speak, if you want to file to run. So once again, I am proposing that the way to change the direction a political party is heading is to not just fight them but to join them! Introduce yourself to your elected officials and get to know them. Attend their town halls and visit them at the capitol or at an on-line Zoom meeting. All it took in my case was sending my representative and senator an e-mail requesting a meeting. They were both very gracious and even though they may not turn out to be supporters, at least I have a one-to- one relationship with both of them. Start attending your county central committee meetings. Each political party holds them, usually on a monthly basis. Become a precinct committee person. (P.C.P.) It’s ridiculously easy. Get involved with committees aimed at solving problems in areas of life that interest you: Health, education, transportation. CHECK ON-LINE FOR UPDATES You’ll be surprised at how fun, exciting, and empowering it can be to be part of the grass roots political process. 44 th Annual Get yourself elected to be a delegate at your party’s annual convention which is 28 – 31 May 2021 where the real action happens. Twenty years ago, a crew of about three dozen A.B.A.T.E. members showed up at the democratic party annual convention in Eugene and they moved mountains.

I’m a life member of A.B.A.T.E. of Oregon, so I will be here as long as the organization continues to exist. I’m ready, willing and able to serve, but only if those services are actually wanted. If all the membership wants is a bland, one sentence legislative report once a month, that’s certainly easy enough to accommodate. I believe that we can do better than that though. Should any A.B.A.T.E. of Oregon member or prospective member care to participate in the legislative process or hear about what BikePAC is doing down in Salem, they are warmly welcome to join us at the Indian Creek Tavern happy hour first Mondays at 7 p.m.

And a final note: Ever consider upgrading your A.B.A.T.E. status to a lifetime membership? You have a lifetime commitment to fight for your rights and freedoms, correct? How about joining BikePAC to help support the great work they do on your behalf? And also please consider becoming a sustaining member of the Motorcycle Riders’ Foundation (M.R.F.) They are working tirelessly at the federal level to promote your motorcycling interests in Washington, D.C. Freedom has never come without a cost. These organizations are the front line warriors fighting for you. Please support their efforts financially and by getting involved as an active member. What’s going on in America most definitely is not just a spectator sport.

So out of curiosity, how do you feel CHECK ON-LINE FOR UPDATES about the prospect of having to “show your papers” (i.e. display your vaccine card) before you can enter Walmart? And having your “vaccination passport” tied to all sorts of things like your credit cards, medical records, D.M.V. records, and who know what else? (You do know that if you have a drivers license, your face is already in the biometrics database where they can put a name to your face and follow you around, right?) How about the hyperinflation that’s headed our way? A $30 trillion dollar debt soon to be $40t if/when the “green new deal” bill passes. For those who are a little slow with math, the debt is increasing at the rate of over $3 million per minute. Think you and your family will be just fine when the predictable and inevitable massive global financial crash hits? The debt isn’t just a lot of funny money. This sum can never be paid off although you, your children, and your grandchildren will be taxed to death in a vain attempt to do so. $20 dollar bills will be as worthless as a sheet of toilet paper.
