7 8 June 15, 2012

9 June 15, 2012 Cari amici, It is with great pleasure that I extend my warmest greetings to everyone attending the Canadian Italian Business and Professional Association (CIBPA) of Toronto’s 60th year Gala. We have gathered together and have an opportunity to reflect on how the CIBPA has worked to build a vibrant community of business professionals, supporting Toronto’s economic growth and development, while celebrating the many contributions made by Italian Canadians. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate President Mario Paura and the current Board of the CIBPA Toronto for their passion, vision and integrity as members and leaders of Toronto and for what will be an outstanding evening and a job well done. The National Federation of CIBPAs has 12 registered chapters throughout Canada. I am pleased to say that the National Federation CIBPA through its Chapters has distributed over $8 million to various Canadian community based charities and programs. Approximately $4.5 million has been donated to over 2,500 students of Italian heritage or students in Italian studies. The CIBPA Chapters, along with other Italian associations, contributed over $2.6 million to Abruzzo Earthquake Relief. This is quite a contribution and investment in Canadian society as well as helping rebuild after a natural disaster. We do this because we care about Canada and Italy. Many of our donations were to hospitals, seniors’ residents and students that receive government student assistance. With an aging population and the cost of a university and college education constantly increasing, we are pleased to be able to help. I have had the privilege of reading letters from past student recipients and can assure you that we are making a difference. On behalf of the National Federation CIBPA, I wish you all a wonderful anniversary celebration, as well as continued success. Respectfully yours,

Bob Sacco, President, National Federation CIBPA & CIBPA Education Foundation

10 June 15, 2012 Ciao! It is a distinct honour, as the President of the Canadian Italian Business and Professional Association of Toronto, to provide some introductory words for this wonderful volume on our organization’s history. Over the last 60 years, CIBPA has evolved from a small and informal venue for Italian professionalsto provide each other with mutual support, into a larger organization dedicated to promoting the betterment of the Canadian community as a whole. I hope that this book will evoke fond memories of years past, and provide insight into the valuable work our association has undertaken since its founding in the early 1950s. From providing assistance to Italian immigrants as they established new lives as Canadians, to supporting seniors as they settled into new homes at Villa Colombo, our association has been there to provide assistance and support. In the last few decades, CIBPA and its members have been leaders in the community, tirelessly lending their energy and expertise to raise money for earthquake relief in L’Aquila, establish bursary programs for university students, support the creation of a documentary on the history of Italian internment during the Second World War, and lead campaigns to expand our hospitals and transform our cultural institutions. We should all be extremely proud of the contributions made by our association and its members. While this book definitely captures the energy and vitality of our organization over the past few decades, it is ultimately but an opening chapter in our ongoing history. In the years ahead, I am confident that we will continue to carry on our traditions, maintain our commitment to the community and each other, and ensure a prosperous future for our children and grandchildren. Enjoy the memories contained in this book, and please join me as we create new ones.

C. Mario Paura President and Chief Executive Officer Canadian Italian Business and Professional Association of Toronto

13 This decade was marked by the arrival of the subway but also by the “changes in the city’s ethnic make-up as waves of immigrants transformed the face and soul of Toronto.”1“Ordinary people, it has often been said, face extraordinary challenges, and certainly it is true of the Italian immigrants who entered Toronto after the Second World War.”2 To help new immigrants face these challenges and to help adjust and establish them inspired the founding of the CIBPA (Toronto), originally named CIBA, in 1952. That same year, the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the CIBPA was established and continues to promote charity within the community. Another highlight was the founding of the Corriere Canadese by Daniel Iannuzzi in 1954. Its slogan, “Proudly Italian but fiercely Canadian” still resonates in the Italian-Canadian community today. The Corriere Canadese gave Italian-Canadians a gateway to Italian culture and language for a new generation.

1950s

16 17 On behalf of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the CIBPA. I am pleased to extend congratulations and best wishes to our partner, the CIBPA on their 60th anniversary, a very accomplished and important milestone for both of us. I am extremely proud of the work we have accomplished as an organization together with the CIBPA over these many decades while promoting our Italian roots and culture as well as offering support to those in need in our community. The Ladies’ Auxiliary looks forward to a bright future alongside our partner the CIBPA so that we can continue our charitable work in the community. Sincerely, Marisa De Luca, President, CIBPA Ladies’ Auxiliary

21 Italian-Canadians living in Toronto in the 1960s were delighted when CHIN Multicultural Radio and the CHIN International Picnic were founded in1966. Their founder Mr. Johnny Lombardi was a steadfast promoter of multiculturalism in the city and in our country. During this decade the CIBPA (Toronto) along with the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the CIBPA, continued to grow and played a leading role in the betterment of its members and the community as a whole. The CIBPA, through its Welfare and Education Fund Project gave thousands of dollars to worthy causes.

1960s

22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 During this decade, Torontonians saw the construction of the CN Tower and, at the federal level, Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau’s policy on multiculturalism. Both events brought the city and Canada to new “heights”. In that famous October 8, 1971 speech, then Prime Minister Trudeau stated: “National unity if it is to mean anything in the deeply personal sense, must be founded on confidence in one’s own individual identity; out of this can grow respect for that of others and a willingness to share ideas, attitudes, and assumptions. A vigorous policy of multiculturalism will help create this initial confidence. It can form the base of a society which is based on fair play for all.”3 Months after, the P M was the CIBPA’s honoured guest at Toronto’s Skyline Hotel. The 70s marked the CIBPA’s 25th anniversary which showcased world-class entertainers, the DaVinci Scholarship Foundation and much benevolent work for important causes.

1970s

30 31 32 33 Highlights from the cibpa 25th Anniversary

34 35 36 37 According to anthropologist Professor Nicholas De Maria Harney, whose father, history professor Robert F. Harney, was a special guest of the CIBPA (Toronto) in 1987, “at the beginning of the 1980s a transformation occurred in how the Italian community was imagined. New meanings entered the swirl of competing images to create further layers and greater complexity within the construction of ‘Italianness’.”4 In addition, Harney states that “part of the effort to construct a proud Italian-Canadian identity and image in Canada by communal leaders and elites reflects the need to change the host society’s stereotypes of the group: that Italian Canadians are involved in criminal activity (the Mafia), and that they are all from humble peasant origins.”5 One gentleman Harney interviewed said, “I felt we needed to prove we were good, hardworking Canadians, but of Italian extraction. What better way to do it than show civic responsibility, taking care of your own […] It was time to give back.”6

1980s

38 39 40 41 42 43 44 45 “The successes of Italian Canadians in both the national and global economy run through every facet of industry, business, science, politics and the arts […] Their efforts are not only important within our country’s borders, but they have had an impact globally.”8 During this decade the CIBPA (Toronto), with its ability to attract talented business people to its membership, also became a vehicle for bringing like-minded people together to organize, develop and raise funds for a number of community projects and important causes. It was during the 1990s that the National Federation of the CIBPA was founded and has continued to expand with chapters all over Canada. At the close of the decade, to recognize those successful Italian Canadian men and women in business and professional capacities, the CIBPA launched the President’s Ball Award of Excellence which continues today.

1990s

46 47 48 49 “There may be value, especially for the young, to look with pride to the pantheon of the Italian contribution to Canada, but the history of Italian-Canadians is not the story of famous, but of solid citizens on ordinary streets”9. Today the CIBPA (Toronto) continues to embrace the entrepreneurial spirit of the Italian-Canadian community by celebrating its excellence and all of its members’ accomplishments through the assignment of annual awards. In addition, through the creation of the CIBPA Education Foundation, approximately 4.5 million dollars have been donated to over 2500 students of Italian origin or those in disciplines with an Italian emphasis across Canada. This is indeed the story of extraordinary citizens making a difference in our great nation.

2000s

Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Let us continue to celebrate the excellence and achievements of past, present and future generations of contributing Canadian Italians. Let us embrace our exciting future, which is inspired by great traditions, culture and history so that the CIBPA continues to be relevant as a rallying voice for the Canadian Italian business and professional communities, and the community at large.”
