W. Clayton Burch, Ex Officio State Superintendent of Schools West Virginia Department of Education Welcome to 2020 Vision: Supporting the Whole Child

We are delighted that you are a part of our 2020 West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) School Counselor Conference, and we invite you to take this opportunity to learn and grow as you build relationships and networks that will build your capacity to support West Virginia students. Thank you to those of you who responded to our initial conference survey, providing input into sessions you would find beneficial. Much planning has gone into providing valuable sessions to offer a variety of trainings and resources designed to assist you in your efforts to promote social-emotional wellness, mental health, academic success, and career readiness for your students. Don’t forget to take advantage of the opportunity to visit our partners in the exhibition hall where you will be provided the opportunity to collaborate with community and state agencies to learn about resources and services available to support students and families. We know, during these two days, you will grow as a professional. Each of us is responsible for the wellness and success of our students. Thank you for what you do each day to accept the responsibility to serve and support students so they may grow into healthy, productive adults.

Thank You, West Virginia School Counselors! To show our gratitude for all you do to support West Virginia students, we are offering some exciting door prizes! Be sure to attend our closing session on Day 2 for your chance to win one of the following: • A grant to cover the cost of attendance at the 2020 American School Counselor Conference in Seattle, Washington; or • A grant to cover the cost of attendance at the 2020 West Virginia School Counselor Association Conference in Buckhannon, West Virginia.

Marshall University President Jerome Gilbert

A Mississippi native with a background in biomedical engineering, President Gilbert previously served for nearly six years as provost and executive vice president of Mississippi State University. Before that, he was the University’s associate provost and associate vice president for academic affairs for six years. Earlier roles include head of the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering and coordinator for the biomedical engineering graduate program in the Bagley College of Engineering.

President Gilbert attained the rank of professor in 1993 after joining the Mississippi State faculty in 1988 as associate professor. From 1989-2005, he also served as adjunct clinical assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery (research) for the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He served for 10 years as a research affiliate with the Institute of Neurocognitive Science and Technology at Mississippi State, and was among the first class of Mississippi State’s honors faculty in the Shackouls Honors College.

President Gilbert was a graduate assistant at Duke University and held previous academic appointments at North Carolina State University and University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) School of Medicine.

In 2014, he was elected to the inaugural board of directors of the Association of Chief Academic Officers. A member of the College of Fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, he also was inducted into the inaugural class of Fellows of the Institute of Biological Engineering, an organization for which he served as president in 2005. In 2017, he was named a Distinguished Fellow in the Bagley College of Engineering at Mississippi State.

Since coming to Marshall, he has been recognized by the West Virginia Martin Luther King Jr. State Holiday Commission with its 2019 “Living the Dream Award” in the area of scholarship. He also was honored by The State Journal as a member of its 2019 Class of Who’s Who in West Virginia Business.

He serves as the vice-chairman of the Conference USA executive committee.

President Gilbert has a bachelor’s degree in biological engineering from Mississippi State and a doctorate in biomedical engineering from Duke.

He and his wife, Leigh, are the parents of three grown children: Caroline, Sallie, and Peter. They have two grandchildren, Eliza and Roger.

2 West Virginia University President E. Gordon Gee

After decades in higher education leadership, West Virginia University President Gordon Gee still loves spending time with students, whether it is at New Student Orientation, a musical performance on campus, an international festival or just walking around any of our West Virginia University campuses.

He also connects with people where they live—on social media. One of America’s most “social” university presidents, he has more than 160,000 followers on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. In person or online, he has one overriding message for students: College is about self-discovery and finding work that you are passionate about is the key to fulfillment.

That is why he is creating a learning environment across ONE WVU that enriches students’ every moment with academics, personal and professional development, campus life, community service and global exploration. Dr. Gee enjoys hearing from educators and counselors about the challenges and opportunities they face in their K-12 environments and how our land-grant university can assist.

President Gee also enjoys connecting with people around the state, hearing their concerns, and reinforcing that West Virginia University is their university, moving West Virginia forward toward educational excellence, good health, and prosperity.

Each summer he tours the state, shaking many hands, giving many hugs, and – yes – appearing in many selfies. In fact, since he returned to WVU in 2014, having a selfie taken with President Gordon Gee has become a bucket-list item for West Virginians, and #geeselfie is a hot hashtag.
