DIRECTORY OF COMMUNITY RESOURCES FOR BROWARD COUNTY SENIOR CITIZENS Aging & Disability Resource Center of Broward County 5300 Hiatus Road Sunrise, FL 33351 (two blocks south of Commercial Boulevard) 2019-20 An Aging & Disability Resource Center and Memorial Healthcare System Production FOREWARD Welcome to sharing our Senior Resource Directory! Our county is the year‐round home to over 451,000 elders. Many retired to South Florida from other parts of the nation, when they were well, self‐sufficient, and a major contributing force to the economy. Others were experiencing declining health and seeking a warmer climate. Many arrived as a couple and suffered the loss of a spouse with the progression of time. Since its incorporation, in 1974, as the first Area Agency on Aging (AAA) in Florida, and one of the initially designated entities in the nation, the Areawide Council on Aging has planned, coordinated, and funded services beneficial to our elders. Employing Federal Older Americans Act, State Community Care for the Elderly, Home Care for the Elderly, and Alzheimer’s disease Initiative Allocations, along with local matching monies, the non‐profit 501(c)(3) organization employs needs assessment data and sponsors public hearings to secure input in its planning processes. The AAA provides and funds programs such as Adult Day Care, Transportation, Home Delivered and Congregate Meals, Health and Wellness Classes, Home Repairs, Legal Services, Respite Care, Elder Abuse Education and Training, and more. In addition, through the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) we serve as a “one‐stop shopping” entity, providing extensive information, referral, and benefits counseling, along with a website for elders, caregivers, professionals, and others seeking assistance pertinent to senior issues. Our website may be accessed at www.adrcbroward.org, and our Elder Helpline may be reached at 954‐745‐9779. Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders (SHINE) Volunteers are stationed in our administrative offices, as well as other locations, countywide, where older persons congregate. They provide sage advice to seniors seeking health insurance counseling. Our Staff is working industriously to update the Resource Directory. Kindly contact the ADRC at 954‐745‐9567 with any changes or updates. Our partnership with Memorial Healthcare System has provided us the financial resources to cover some of the costs associated with producing the Resource Directory. Sales of the document are of vital importance to our nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, which is committed toward assuring that program information is updated on a continuum throughout the year. We thank Memorial for their commitment to supporting the ADRC and seniors in our community. Since its inception in 1953, Memorial Healthcare System has been a leader in providing high quality health care services to South Florida residents. Today, it is one of the largest public healthcare systems in the nation and highly regarded for its exceptional patient and family‐centered care.
