We are also witnessing history being made this uficmoon, as ii's Ihe very first occasion thai to-days teams have met at Ihe linal stage of their respecti ve finals. At senior level in particular this is surprising since not alone arc Cahir and Ardlinnan near neighbours but both cl ubs havc a long tradition of playing gael ic football at senior level. Indeed much more difficult to understand is the faclthat Cahir arc contesting their fi rst ever county senior final. Tile year 1887 is described in the Annals of the Association as an eventful and exciting period. The "Celt ic Times" (Michael Cusack's paper] named Tipperary as the strongest Gaelic County in Ireland. with a nelwork oflCams [130 in all ] from one end of the County to the other. In that list arc included two teams in the Cahir area Pouhnucha and Cahir. The correct title for the Cahir team was the Irish version ... The Faugh An Ball agh", which when translated reads, .• Clearthe Way." Ardfinnan, whose contribution to football in the County has been enonnous. have a total of scvcn senior County titles, their first s uccess coming in 1935. However, its all of twenty nine years 1974, since the 0' Dwyer cup found a resting place in the parishes of Ardfinnan, Grange and Ballybacon. Today we look forward to a great fina l in the truest sense of the word. A fi nal worthy of Tipperarys uniq ue footba ll hi story, but above all a fi nal that wil l produce players o f skil l, commitment and leadershipqualilies that w ill lead a Tipperary Senior team to the pinnacle it deserves. T he minor fin al between Borrisokane and Carrick Swans promises to be an excellent curtain rai ser. Borris, morc noted for their hurting achievemcnts have produced Illany grcat football ers down through the years from club 10 A I1 - Ireland levcL They have al so g ivcn us somc great admi nistrators at variolls levels, with a deep commitment to and love for . The Swans arc undoubtedly in fu ll night at present. Sunday last their minor hurlers were pan of a great drawn Co minor hurling final. Undoubtedl y their footbalters of th is very same age group will be endeavouring to add another ti tle to their name. In January of 2004 a week-end residential coaching course for clubs will take place. The purpose of the course is to provide a m in imum ofthrce coaches in each Club all up to level one standard . Also last Friday night saw the launch in the Tipperary Institute in ofa special coaching schcme fo r players in the 19 to 22 agc bracket. We express our thanks to the County Chainnan Donal Shanahan as thi s was his init ia ti ve, and hi sco·operation has been un limited. To the many people who made the night the great success it was, we express our sincere appreciati on. The "Busilless for YOllr "Business" CARRICK SWANS

The meeting arour footballcrs with Borrisokanc today in the minor final is a novel pairing. This is the first time we have played Borrisokanc in any competition. Borrisokanc and Carrick Swan both have long traditions in TippcraryGaa and its filting the first encounter will be a county final.

Carrick Swan arc more renowned in hurling circles although we have had our fair share of success in football championships. Since winning our first county footballlillc in 1944 ajunior combination of Carrick Swan and Faughccn we have proudlycompclcd in all gradesoffootball from juvenile 10 senior III both South and county.

TIlis year alone our club has fielded football teams in Senior. Junior. Under 21. minor and all ju\cnilc competitions. Carrick $\\an is one of the few clubs throughout the county that fields teams in all competitions both hurling and football. Since winning the county Intemled.ate football championship III 1999 we ha\e proudly competed in the senior ranks and we hope many of tooays young minors will progress to senior ranks in the coming year.

Carrick swan have been successful twice before in thc minor 13 football championship. We hope today our minor players can claim this title for the third time. II is also a nOlewonhy aehicvement to be compctlllg in a sccond minor final insidc one week. our minor hurlers drew with Moycarkcy Borris in the county A hurling final III Semple Stadium last Sunday. Many of the same playcrs will be playing today and with constant coaching and dc\clopment of our young players \\ecan look forward toa bright future in both hurling and football. We wish out team and mcntors the best ofluck today and we oOer thanks to our supponers. sponsors and all those who have helped our club in any way throughoulthe ycar.

Today sees the final orthe County Senior Football Final. While Ardfinnan and Cahlf deserve theIr places III the final today. I wonder what odds you "muld have gal on these 2 Icams cOlllcsting loday's decider. Going back to 1993, only Commercials, Fcthard and Moyle Rovers have won the Senior Football Final. All 3 South learns have been very strong III recent years bUlllOW 2 other tcams from the division have won the right to play for the O'Dwyer Cup. Ardfinnan and Cahir both made the County semi-finals in 200 I so they have been promising to reach this stage in recent years.

Ardfinnan have been County Senior FOOibal] champions on 7 occasions, the last in 1974. The most memorable period for the Ardfinnan club came from 1961 to 19 74 when they contested 11 out of 13 Senior Football finals, winning five including "3 in a row" from 1962 to 1964. Few would have predicted the 29-year drought for Ardfinnan that fo llowcd. Sport is fu nny like that somctimes and it is important to avail of any opportunities that come your way. Ardfinnan will be looking toAlan Lonergan, Shane Sweeney, Sean Mahcr, Michael Phelan, Tristin BrowneandAlbert Kcating to lead them to victory in today's final.

Calm on the other hand have never won a County Senior Football title. The Cahir Slashers won a South final 111 1959 before this current batch of players won the 200 I South Senior Football Final captained by Paul Frazer, a feat repeated this year when they defeated Moyle Rovers 111 the South final . That win put them in to a County Semi-Final and after 2 tough matches. they beat the 200 I Champions Fethard. They will be looking to Benny Ilickey. RobbieCostigan, Michael Tarrant and James Ilyiand to lead them to victory.

The new County Senior Football champions, whoever they may be wi ll have the honour ofleading Tipperary forward in to the 2004 IIlter-county campaign. While wc wall for the confinnation of a Senior Football manager, there is plenty of work going on behind the secnes. The launch of a Football Development programme for the 19 - 22 age group last Friday night in Thurles is a vcry positive development. We need to look to the future and those involved in bringing this idea 10 fruition arc to be complimented. I have no doubt the players IIlvolvcd will benefit greatl y from this programmc and the faci that this will run for at least 5 years shows that thi s is a serious ini tiative.

Back to matters here today ,lI1d in thc Minor "B" Final, Carrick Swan will try and emulate Carrick Davins achievement in win ning th is title 12 months ago when they take on the North Champions Borrisokane. The Carrick Swan club wcre involved in the drawn Minor "A" Hurling Final last Sunday and one wonders iflhey will have their eye on Ihe replay. Borrisokane on the other hand have been prcparing well fo r this fina l after a good semi-final win over Moyearkey-Borris recently. I hope fora good match.

Finally. it would be remiss of me on County Football Final day if I failed to mention . would like to wish h11n well with the Ireland team in Australia and I am sure he will do us all proud in Ihe ,-r-,coming ",eeks. Enjoy the day.

In 1994 when he had completed his managerial role with th e Tipperary hurling team the fonner secretary of th e South Board Miccal 0 Meara penned the following lin es in verse form in a tribute to ' Babs'

TilE BEAUTIFUL GAME From boys 10 a field to the big crowd roar. There'.s never been anything to excite me more. Less than a minute remains on the clock From the day I could run , till the day I cant walk As I tighten my lace and turn down the sock. And even then. about the game I'll talk. One last chance and it's all down 10 me, lt must be a goal. for we need all three. A few steps to the ball now seems like a mile, But a well placed shot and I'll be carried in style Istep up to the ball and look towards the posts On the shoulders of team mates expressing their joy, Is that the crowd I hear ,or is it the ghosts It's a dream that's consumed me since I was a boy. Of men who before me have faced the same test And never once failed to give of their best. My feet pound the ground, my foot sends the ball It sails through the air over men who arc tall, My father he gave me the love of it all, Then dipping and curling it finds the goal, When he guided my anns to strike that first ball. And just for a moment I'm in touch wi th my soul. A hurl cy or footb

. STARS OF THE PAST

PAKIE BRENNAN (ARDFINNAN)

Pakie Brennan is widely regarded as onc of the best footballcrs who ever graced the blue and gold.

He first came to prominence as a minor with his nativcArdfinnan and he was a member of the 1945 County minor team. Domiciled in Dublin he played w1th Trinity College and made a significant contribution to the Geraldines club for whom he played from 1946 to \958, before returning 10 play for Ardfinnan in 1959.

He first played in the Inter County S.F. Championship in 1947, lining out at wing '-'====::...:=:;. forward on the team beaten by four points at the hands of in the Munster semi final. From 1947 up \0 and including 1953, he was an ever present on the Tipperary County team, holding positions at wing fonvard and comer forward as well as midfield.

Despite some valiant performances, Tipperary failed to advance to a Munster Final, but individual displays, notably from Mick Cahill, Sean Cleary, Pakie Brennan and Tom Keane caught the eyes of the Munster selectors. Pakie Brennan was honoured with a Munster jersey for four successive years.1949 to 1952, winninga coveted Railway Cup medal in 1949.

A player of great ski ll and style his play was admired by friend and foe alike, whilst his outstanding spOltingqualities won him further renown.

His elevation to South Tipperary Board's Hall of Fame in 1998 and his subsequent selection on the MunsterTeam of the Millennium were widely welcomed.

PADDY SAUNDERS (CAHIR)

Perhaps one of Cahir's most famous footballers of the past was Paddy Saunders. Paddy was a native of Abbeyleix, Co. Laois and at 6' 3" had the physique and agility to play Gaelic football at the highest level.

He started playing football locally with Ballyporeen and later BaUylooby. But from 1946 he became a leading member ofCahir Junior and Senior football teams. He captained Cahir Junior footballers to 3 county titles, 1953, 1955 and 1958 (Although he did not actuall y play in the 1958 final). The following year, 1959, he captained the Cahir senior football team, when they won the South Championship, for the first time. However, Cahir controversia ll y lost the replay of the County semi-final to LoughmoreiCastleiney.

Paddy was a regular on the Tipperary Senior Football team from 1948 to 1956. [n fact Paddy was chosen to play with Munster, but because of suspension did not get the opportunity to play. Paddy continued to play with Cahir well into the 1960's.

Once he reti red, he became actively involved wi th club and was a selector for many years with the club's football teams.

Up to the time of his death Paddy was an ardent fol lowerofall Tipperaty teams and enjoyed nothing more than discussing matches and players with anyonc.

Paddy Saunders always played a wholehearted game of football , even when he togged-out fo r the veterans tcam in the Centenary year 1984. His spirit carried Cahirto many victories and hopefully Cahir's you ng players will achieve what Paddy would dearly love to have achieved i.c. a County Senior Football \,-., Title. o~

CAHIR o HURLING & FOOTBALL CLUB

Chairrnan: Patrick Il yiand Treasurer: Tadgh Iloward Secretary: Eddie Lonergan P. R. 0.: Ted Linehan

This is indeed an historic day for Cahir G A. A. club as we contcsl ollr first ever County senior final. All through the last 106 years since Gaelic games were lirs! played in an organised way the people who kepI the club going and indeed revived it in 1936 after il had ceased to exist for the m OSI of a decade dreamt of winning a County senior title so to be here today just one step away frolllihal dream becoming a reality means everything to the members oCthe club men like Club Life-President John F. O'Donnell who first started playing in the 1930's and has been involved with the club e\er since and Eddie Lonergan who has been club secrctary sincc 1982 and County Football sccrctary since 1987.

In 1887 two G A. A. clubs were rcgistered in Cahir parish, onc in Poulmucka and the other in the town which was call ed the Faugh An Ballaghs (Clear the way). Both clubs initially played footba ll but the onc in Poulmucka later became known as the Wild Rovers and became more renowned as a hurling club. The club in the town really becamc successful in the 1950's winning 3 Junior and 2 Minor County football titles as well 3 County Under 15 football Rural titles. This club was known as the Cahir Slashers, the name is said to come from Tim Looney who worked in the Post Office and came rrom Longrord where the football club is called the Slashers. Eventuall y the Wild Rovers and Cahir Slashers amalgamated to rorm Cahir Hurling & Football club as we know it to-day.

Cahir have supplied players for Tipperary County teams from 1920 when Tommy Ryan and Jimmy McNamara played in the infamous match and indeed WOIl All-Ireland Senior Footba ll Championship medals that year. Two others, Gus O'Dwyer and William Burke, won All-Irel and Junior Football medals around that time. In the 1950's Tom Walsh played for Munster as well as rorTipperary. In the early 1970's today's coach, Cohn O'Flaherty. won a Fitzgibbon Cup medal with U. C. G and played Football for Tipperary fo r many years. Frank 1I 0wlin captained the Tipperary Minor Football team beaten in the AIl Ire land Final in 1984 and also on the team were Ger Enright and Richie Quirke. [n 1998 today's No. II Gary MOITison won an All-Ireland Junior Football medal with Tipperary. John Costello played with Munster and Tipperary in the 1980's and 1990's and al so won a Sigerson cup medal with U. C. C. Ger Enright was also selected on the Munsterpanel during thc 1990's.

Games were playcd in several diffcrent fields around the parish until 1954 when part orthe old Cahir Park Estate was purchased and thus gavc C'lhir G A. A. onc or the best located pitches any town could have as it is only 100 yards from the Square. Much voluntary work has gone into developing the licld down the years and we arc forever IIldebted to these unsung hcroes who gave and continue to give their time to devclop and maintalll the field and look after the teams.

There arc currentl y over twenty teams being catcred ror by the Senior, Juvenile, Ladies Football and Camogie clubs and thc pitch never gets a rest which is why the elub is currently developing a second fi eld wilh in the new Duncske Complex which is a very exciting venture for the club. With the population orthe town growing as it is the club must grow with it in order to cater ror the growing numbers and the success of our flagship teams, J. E. the Senior Footballcrs and Intermediate hurlers is vital to the development of the club. We wish the team and managcment the bl..:st of luck today and hope they can bring home this coveted County titlc.
