On behalf of Unity, we are proud of the accomplishments made in 2019 and 2020 as you will see in Thank You to Our this report. Highlights for 2019 included kicking off of the Vibrant Communities of La Porte County process, which hadn’t been done in nearly 30 years. We took pride in 2019 in making $1.4 million in 2020 SPONSORS grants and scholarships that nourished the community. We responded to opportunities from the Lilly Endowment to plan and implement strategies to strengthen our county and region – where POWER OF A COMMUNITY we worked closely with the Crown Point Community Foundation, Legacy Foundation and others to $5,000 accomplish what none of us could do alone. The contrast between 2019 and 2020 has been unfathomable. In 2020, Unity Foundation pivoted quickly to remote working & meeting via Zoom and offi ce visits by appointment. We are proud of what we accomplished:

Unity Helps Celebrate Treasures NAOMI BOWMAN TALBERT ANDERSON Naomi Anderson was an extraordinary suff ragist, trailblazer and a Michigan City native. Anderson was born in Michigan City in 1843 to free African American parents and became a signifi cant suff ragist, civil rights activist, orator, writer and poet. Unity is helping the Michigan City Mainstreet Association and its partners to celebrate her life.

The Celebrate Naomi Anderson Fund will be used to highlight and preserve her lesser-known but incredibly impactful story. In August 2020, the Indiana Women’s Suff rage Centennial Commission and the Indiana Main Street Council awarded a $40,000 Preserving History Grant to the Michigan City Mainstreet Association to highlight and preserve women’s history. The grant will be used to construct a sculpture, mosaic or mural (based on community and artist input) in Charles R. Westcott Park to honor Anderson. This project is in partnership with Lubeznik Center for the Arts, the NAACP La Porte County Branch – Unit 3061 and the Unity Foundation of La Porte County.

THE SCULPTOR ISAMU NOGUCHI TRIBUTE FUND

Sculptor Isamu Noguchi may be La Porte’s greatest success story, and at the same time, the least known. At the tender age of fourteen, Noguchi found himself all but stranded thousands of miles away from home among the rolling hills of La Porte County.

Art and history enthusiasts wish to celebrate the critical formative years that Japanese-American sculptor Isamu Noguchi (1904 – 1988) spent in La Porte as a teen, who then went on to become an internationally celebrated sculptor, designer and artist. Art and history enthusiasts saw the importance of paying tribute to Noguchi’s life, the way La Porte and Rolling Prairie, several families and La Porte High School infl uenced his life, to connect La Porte with his New York museum and to promote the value of the arts.

The Sculptor Isamu Noguchi Tribute Fund was established in 2019 to support eff orts to bring the story of how La Porte County residents welcomed, put him through La Porte High School and then, led by Dr. Edward Rumely, mentored him into preparation to become a leading world sculptor. The fund is poised to bring attention to La Porte’s connection to Isamu Noguchi via a custom mural, attracting Noguchi enthusiasts here, distribution of Noguchi books to local libraries, schools and museums and activities connecting La Porte County to the Noguchi Museum, located in New York. The Noguchi mural is displayed at the La Porte County Public Library in La Porte, Indiana.

Unity Foundation Joins Forces with Regional Partners to Launch NWI BizHub Online Entrepreneurial Resource Tool

A pioneering collaboration among Unity Foundation of La Porte County, Legacy Foundation, Crown Point Community Foundation, Northwest Indiana Small Business Development Center and the Center of Workforce Innovations has culminated in the development of NWI BizHub (nwibizhub.com), a new network to advance economic growth in Northwest Indiana.

Indiana is home to over 500,000 small businesses that support over 1 million jobs. After , Northwest Indiana is the state’s second largest business population. This new online platform is the result of Ignite the Region: A Regional Strategy for Economic Transformation. “The Ignite the Region process showed that our entrepreneurial ecosystem was fragmented,” said Maggi Spartz, Unity Foundation President. “The lead task was to create a database or tool that would help entrepreneurs of any kind, fi nd resources more quickly. We heard it from almost every entrepreneur, ‘I didn’t know where to look for help. I stumbled around until I got lucky. It took a lot of time.’ We are fortunate to now have NWI BizHub to solve this critical need for our community.”

NWI BizHub is the fi rst of several projects which Unity Foundation, Legacy Foundation and Crown Point Community Foundation will be supporting. Their overall goal is to encourage an ecosystem that supports all entrepreneurs to become major players in the regional innovation economy.

15 | UNITY FOUNDATION OF LA PORTE COUNTY REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 2019-2020 “We believe in the importance of equitable opportunity for all prospective and current business owners and NWI BizHub provides that access,” said Carolyn Saxton, Legacy Foundation President. “We look forward to working with many owners in the Northwest Indiana region to help guide and support their continued growth and are excited to be part of the NWI BizHub eff ort.”

NWI BizHub will provide local entrepreneurs with the resources and tools to start and grow their business through an easy, free online referral network.

“The process of matching a small business’ needs to the right resource is simple, convenient, and easy-to-use,” said Donna Catalano, NWI BizHub Network Navigator. “Anyone can access the network by going to nwibizhub.com and clicking on resources in the menu bar, or the let’s work together button. Concurrently with this launch, we have been recruiting area organizations that support owners to join the network, and now feature almost 60 resource partners who are ready to connect on NWI BizHub.”

NWI BizHub launched Nov. 12 as part of the 2020 E-Day Entrepreneurship Excellence Awards, sponsored by the Indiana Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Northwest.

“We were thrilled to host the launch of NWI BizHub during the E-Day event program, said Lorri Feldt, SBDC Regional Director and NWI BizHub partner. So fi tting that an engaging new online entrepreneurial resource hub should have its premiere at the E-Day Entrepreneurial Excellence awards.”

NWI BizHub joins a national network of organizations doing this work through SourceLink®. Founded in 2003, SourceLink® is a national nonprofi t that has been providing consulting and technical expertise for the eff ort.

“I’m excited to see the NWI BizHub network launch,” said Rob Williams, SourceLink® Director. “It was born out of both a need and with key collaboration partners at the table. From what I have experienced working with the team behind NWI BizHub, I expect this region will fast become a leader among our network and inspire other communities to champion and support their local entrepreneurs just as well.”

Convening for Good Unity Foundation continues to transform how we meet our mission of strengthening La Porte County now and forever. Through listening, learning, collaboration and convening, we are taking action to support those we serve.

Unity embarks on its 16th year of facilitating the Home Team of La Porte County, a collaborative group of individuals who work together to fulfi ll the vision to create a county where all residents will live a life free from homelessness. The Home Team of La Porte County is a collaboration of over 120 nonprofi ts, government, churches and passionate individuals concerned with housing and homelessness, an issue that is more important now than ever.

Keeping people housed is essential and much more cost eff ective than re-housing homeless families. Unity began convening a Rental Assistance Group to take steps to prevent mass homelessness. When rental assistance funding became available, this group promoted the program to social service agencies and residents by creating press releases urging them to apply for help at Indianahousingnow.org.

As a result, La Porte County had the 5th highest total of applications in the state. The group continues to meet bi-weekly to work to prevent mass homelessness.

As the global pandemic widened, our shelter directors and others began meeting weekly to develop a shelter protection plan to protect shelter guests and the community. The plan ultimately relied on testing people before they could enter a shelter, minimizing risk. The plan worked. Larry Butcher, La Porte County Emergency Management Administrator went above and beyond to counsel, guide and support this group to prevent the spread of coronavirus in our three shelters: Sandcastle, Interfaith Pads and Stepping Stone. Ed Seal, Home Team and Housing Opportunities Street Outreach Coordinator, with support from Unity staff , rapidly responded to emerging shelter needs and is an essential liaison between shelters, healthcare providers, funders and La Porte County government.
