With the advice of the Rector, the Rev. Jackie Buck, it has been decided to stop the collection for the new Church Lottery immediately. Any money that has already been collected will be held until the collection is resumed at a later date. The new lottery will then run for a year from a new date. There will be no April draw until further notice. This is mainly because of hygiene and the dangers of cash handling, the actual draw and distributing payment. As soon as we are able to we will resume as usual. Editors Note Welcome to, the slightly slimmer, July edition of the Ecton View but as we say here at the View, size is not everything! I would like to thank the Prime Minister for making his announcement on unlocking lockdown, just before the print deadline for this months issue and what an exciting announcement it was! Firstly, we can now get a haircut, and I am sure both our local hairdressers, Jane and Nicky, will be rushed off their feet. Once you have had your hair cut, you will soon be able to visit a local pub! We are lucky to have two that both have lovely outdoor areas to enjoy a cold beverage or two.

I would also like to thank all the advertisers who have be able to stick with us, even thou some of them have been closed since March, your support allows the Ecton View to remain subscription free. We always welcome back local businesses old and new. A new advertiser, starting this month is M&B Newsagents from Earls Barton, who now provide Newspapers and magazines for the village on a daily basis. Big thanks to all the volunteer collectors.

If you would like to order a regular publication please contact M&B News, if you would like to join the volunteers in collecting from Earls Barton, one morning a week between 7.30 & 8.00am, please contact me on 07986 557773 or email: [email protected]

So please enjoy the new freedoms, Stay Alert and Stay Safe

Your Carbon Footprint As Parish councillors, we look at a wide variety of ways, small and large, to improve our community and that includes looking at what we can do for the environment. Things we can do include: switching to low energy street lighting, supporting local planting schemes, improving recycling options, managing our green spaces. Have you ever wondered how much carbon you and your household are adding to the world’s carbon emissions? If you are concerned about what we can do now, and do for future generations, it would be useful to have an idea about the principal sources of our household’s carbon emissions. In fact, you might find it quite a revelation to see what decisions you make about your household’s carbon you can affect the most. Chester University developed a community carbon calculator in conjunction with a community project at Ashton Hayes, their community plan was to go carbon neutral. Anyone can have a go at using the carbon calculator spreadsheet at http://www.goingcarbonneutral.co.uk/community- carbon-calculator-un/ or by Googling “Ashton Hayes carbon calculator”. Once you have filled in the spreadsheet, you get a grand total value of emissions in tonnes. But it starts getting interesting if you change some of the figures. In other words you can watch the numbers change if you alter the number of long haul flights you take, or change your annual car mileage. The chart was devised in 2006 so it may be a bit out on some figures and it does not include an option for solar heating, but it opens your eyes to the largest factors affecting your carbon footprint. I imagine that you may have exhausted the footpaths around Ecton although it seems that every time I do the same walk there is something new to see. But you may feel the need to see some different scenery.

As there is little problem in travelling a few miles why not try Olney. There are plenty of places to park in and around the town and it isn’t far to drive.

If you like an easy walk: Emberton Country Park:

From your parking place in town follow the road towards Newport Pagnall and cross the river. Look out for herons by the river. Veer right down the slope after crossing the bridge and the only decision you have to make is, do you go clockwise or anticlockwise?

The paths are all surfaced and wide. Back in town you can pick up a takeaway coffee at Costa (but I’m sure other coffee shops are available!)

Or you could try: A walk to Clifton Reynes.

Find your way to the back of the church (the grave of John Newton (Amazing Grace) can be found in the graveyard) where a footpath between two large houses takes you to the riverside.

Follow the footpath ahead across the flood plains (there may be cattle) and you cross the river over a footbridge. Climb the footpath to the left until you emerge from the trees.

Look back and you’ll see a fabulous view of the church and the town. The footpath curves to the right and joins a track which runs in a straight line to the village of Clifton Reynes.

Turn left and you’ll end up at the tiny church where you can join another track which runs uphill.

At the top rejoin your original route by turning right. When you cross back over the river explore the bank to the right where you can have a picnic or just enjoy the sunshine.

As you head back towards the church in Olney veer right and you will join a path that runs along the edge of the allotments.

Explore the back streets before heading to the coffee shop. Church Open for Private Prayer

Following changes in guidance we are now able to open the church for a limited time for the purpose of private prayer. Until further notice the church will be open on Saturdays 9.30am - 10.30am. This will be for quiet, private prayer, services of worship are not allowed at the time of writing. Everyone is welcome. Please respect the social and hygiene rules in place and be aware that space is limited. For hygiene reasons only the area at the back of the church will be open. As with all things at this time these arrangements will be kept under review. May God bless, protect and guide us. Revd. Jackie Buck 01933 631232

As some of you will know I am a keen gardener and I’m glad that many people, during the Pandemic, have discovered or rediscovered the benefits of gardening and how rewarding and relaxing it can be. Even visiting a garden or open space can really help us to put our thoughts and emotions into perspective. As we begin to come out of the lockdown each of us will no doubt be experiencing many different thoughts and emotions. We may feel relief at having more freedom or feel quite fearful about mixing with more people. We may still be missing many of the routine things we used to be able to do, and maybe wondering if we will ever do things in the same way again. We may be frustrated that things can’t just go back to the way they were, or we may have got comfortable with a new way of living. Many of us will be worried about our finances, family, friends, work. Things will take time to get back to some kind of normal and as they do we will experience, in ourselves and in others, a whole variety of mixed emotions. Taking time to be with nature, to ponder the miracles that take place every day, can help us in turn to be gentle and understanding with ourselves and with those around us. With this thought in mind I’d like to share with you the Prayer of St Francis, the Patron Saint of the Environment. Lord, make me an instrument of your peace Where there is hatred, let me sow love Where there is injury, pardon Where there is doubt, faith Where there is despair, hope Where there is darkness, light And where there is sadness, joy O Divine Master, grant that I may Not so much seek to be consoled as to console To be understood, as to understand To be loved, as to love For it is in giving that we receive And it's in pardoning that we are pardoned And it's in dying that we are born to Eternal Life Amen

Yours in Christ, Revd. Jackie Buck 01933 631232

BIG BUTTERFLY COUNT - Friday 17th July to Sunday 9th August Watch the butterflies for 15minutes in your garden , park or countryside. Information on how to take part at www.bigbutterflycount.org. Unfortunately they can’t accept counts of sightings on paper, email, text or phone, but can online & on smart phone apps. If you can’t access these I’m sure you have a family member, friend or neighbour who can send your counts in for you. LONG GRASS Leaving an area of long grass through the summer, autumn & winter will help as butterflies & moths lay eggs there & caterpillars stay there throughout the winter. Long grass is good for some bees, frogs & hedgehogs, so they can hide from predators. BUT PLEASE CHECK there are no frogs or hedgehogs in your long grass BEFORE you mow or strim. Hedgehog rescue centres receive many hedgehogs with horrific injuries caused by strimmers/mowers. Charlotte Eley.
