DESERT ROSE BAND~ACOUSTIC (biography) ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME MEMBER CHRIS HILLMAN AND THE DESERT ROSE BAND~ACOUSTIC TO PERFORM IN A RARE APPEARANCE Joining Chris Hillman in this acoustic appearance are John Jorgenson on guitar/mandolin, Herb Pedersen on guitar and Bill Bryson on bass. Chris Hillman was one of the original members of The Byrds, which also included Roger McGuinn, David Crosby, Gene Clark and Michael Clarke. The Byrds were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1991. After his departure from the Byrds, Hillman, along with collaborator Gram Parsons, was a key figure in the development of country-rock. Hillman virtually defined the genre through his seminal work with the Byrds and later bands, The Flying Burrito Brothers and Manassas with Steven Stills. In addition to his work as a musician, Hillman is also a successful songwriter and his songs have been recorded by artists as diverse as; Emmylou Harris, Patti Smith, The Oak Ridge Boys, Beck, Steve Earl, Peter Yorn,Tom Petty, and Dwight Yoakam. In the 1980s Chris formed The Desert Rose Band which became one of country music’s most successful acts throughout the 1980s and 1990s, earning numerous ‘Top 10’ and ‘Number 1’ hits. The band’s success lead to three Country Music Association Awards, and two Grammy nominations. Although the Desert Rose Band disbanded in the early 1990s, they performed a reunion concert in 2008 and have since played a few shows together in select venues. Herb Pedersen began his career in Berkeley, California in the early 1960′s playing 5 string banjo and acoustic guitar with artists such as Jerry Garcia, The Dillards, Old and in the Way, David Grisman and David Nelson.

1. Popular Avant-Garde: Renegotiating Tradition When studying the Grateful Dead—both the band and the wider cultural phenomenon—one should not be surprised if the image discovered is mixed or even contradictory: Was the Grateful Dead a rock band at all? If not, what was it? Jerry Garcia early on could claim that the band was not for “cranking out rock and roll” but “to get high.”1 Bob Weir stated that “we’re a jazz band. I won’t say we’re nothing but a jazz band, because our basic premise is rock ‘n’ roll. We just approach it from a jazz point of view.”2 Phil Lesh talked about the music that the band played as “electric chamber music,”3 empha- sizing that the “Grateful Dead is more than music, but it has always been fundamentally music . this ongoing experiment in collective creativity.”4 The three band members apparently agree that they did not form your aver- age rock band, but at the same time they formulate rather different visions of what the band is about. Even within the band, opinions differ on what must have been a central issue—but that issue could not be settled outside of the music, it could only be worked out, resolved in music. In that practice, positions could shift, often in just a few bars—Garcia searching for an Apollonian exactness and clarity, the definitive CD version or interpretation of a song, and Lesh pushing the music into the ecstatic unknown, promoting improvisation and madness, the Dionysian version of the Dead.

Jim and Jesse were among the bluegrass acts most revered by Jerry Garcia and picking pal Sandy Rothman during Garcia’s pre-Grateful Dead banjo years, and Rothman, along with guitarists David Nelson (New Riders) and Stu Allen (Jerry Garcia Band) had the chance to support McReynolds on this set of classic Dead songs penned by Garcia and writing partner Robert Hunter. Octagenarian McReynolds might seem like an unlikely choice to do an album of Dead songs, but his connections to the rock community go back to a 1969 session for the Doors’ Soft Parade album, and his wife Joy’s affinity for Garcia’s music led to this collaboration. On this album, McReynolds not only sings what might be termed ‘bluegrassy’ Dead songs like “Black Muddy River” and “Ripple, ” but fully electric performances of more rock based pieces like “Fire on the Mountain” and “Franklin’s Tower ” featuring various combinations of Nelson, Allen, and steel guitarist Tommy White.
