Reality is perceived as a great dream intentionally moulded by the Demiurge in order to forget the Light concealed in the creations. By consequence, the power of the Demiurge consists precisely in being the creator and keeper of a level of existence limited in space and time. Gnostic imagination plastically depicts the homicide and ignorant Demiurge with the features of an abnormous creature with the head of a lion and wings, enveloped in the coils of a snake. Thus, Gnostics reinterpreted a key figure in the syncretic pantheon of late Hellenism, i. e. AiŸn, the god of endless eternity, the Saeculum, the Iranic Zurw…n, the Jewish ‚Ol…m. This means that AiŸn involved contacts with two different visions: the AiŸnes are the creations that populate the gnostic pl‡rŸma, immortal and eternal entities, and outside the pl‡rŸma the demiurgic AiŸn arises as the result of a divine «fault», a monstrous being whose somatic features can be found in the Orphic and Mithriac iconography. The central idea of Gnosticism, as of all the mystery religions, is that of salvation; a or inner knowledge was offered to the elect, through which the soul might be delivered from its condition of bondage. Salvation, as understood by Christianity is fundamentally ethical or «religious» in its meaning (Gnoli 1967: 290), but in Gnosticism the ethical aspect of redemption falls almost completely into the background of a ritual praxis.

JEWISH INFLUENCES ON THE "HELIAND" BY GILLES QUISPEL Utrecht University When I last saw my good friend Erwin Goodenough, some weeks before his death, he told me with impressive courage about the nature of his illness and mentioned his intention to write now the book about St. Paul, which he ever had in mind when he was working at the Jewish Symbols. Few of us do not have such a last perspective for their work, a last and decisive word that is never spoken and inspires us during our whole life. So the present writer would like to write, but probably never will do so, a "History of the Churches". Not of the Church, but of the Latin, Greek and Syrian Churches. In such a book conventional labels would be avoided. Calvin would be just an extreme representative of African, Augustinian theology, Nestorianism nothing more than a reform, due to Barsauma, of the indigenous Syro-Palestinian Semitic type of Christianity, Messalianism nothing but an interesting and perfectly legitimate revival of a very old and very Syrian spirituality. Then a phenomenological description of these three varieties of re ligious experience would be possible. Latin Christianity was so practical and unspeculative as the Romans always were, only interested in the great realities of existence, guilt and grace, sober and efficient in its cult as the Old-Roman pagan Prayerbooks once were, stressing order, obedience, stability, all good, old, conservative Roman virtues, aiming at a theocratic order of society, the rule of God's commandment over the whole world. But there are several different, conflicting versions of the story, including two-person (1977), seven-person (1979) and eight-person (1981) versions. Disagreements include the name of the person who ﬁrst found the jar. Martin Krause and Rodolphe Kasser both questioned these stories in 1984, and their scepticism is corroborated by the Channel 4 (UK) series, The Gnostics (1987), which features Muhammad ‘Ali himself, in his only known appearance in front of camera, offering his account of the discovery. Several major points of divergence from the earlier reports raise questions about the reliability of ‘Ali’s testimony. It may be safest to conclude that the earlier account of the discovery offered by Jean Doresse in 1958 is more reliable than the later, more detailed, more vivid versions that are so frequently retold. The Coptic Gnostic Texts from Nag Hammadi
THE COPTIC GNOSTIC TEXTS FROM NAG HAMMADI Andrew Helmbold From the second until the fourth century the Christian church was engaged in a life and death struggle with a hydra-headed heresy known as Gnosticism. Out of this struggle came at least three important results: (1) The canon of the New Testa- ment, (2) The creeds of the early church, (3) catholic Christendom. Until, recently our resources for the study of early Christendom's great rival were exceedingly meager. They consisted of fragments of Gnostic works found in the church fathers, the statements of the fathers themselves, and three Gnostic codices: (1) Codex Brucianus of the 5-6th century, containing the two Books of Jeu and an untitled work, (2) Codex Askewianus, of the 4th century, containing the Pistis Sophia, and (3) Codex Berolinensis 8502 of the 5th century containing The Gospel of Mary, The Apocryphon of John and The Wisdom of Jesus.1 From these sources scholars have endeavored to reconstruct the origins, the theology or mythology, and the praxis of Gnosticism, and to evaluate its relationship to orthodox Christianity and other re- ligions. New light has been thrown on these subjects, as well as on many related topics, by the discovery in 1945, of a complete Gnostic library at Nag Hammadi in Upper Egypt.2 This discovery has been hailed by some as the greatest manuscript find of the century, while others a little more cautious say it is at least as important as the Dead Sea Scrolls.3 Because most of the texts are still unpublished, the importance of the find has not yet reached the general public, or even most of the scholarly world.

Ethan Goss The Profanity of Materiality: Gnostic Theology and the Struggle for the Sacredness of Social Justice Advisor: Mark Schaefer, Philosophy and Religion University Honors Fall 2012 The Profanity of Materiality: Gnostic Theology and the Struggle for the Sacredness of Social Justice “Orthodoxy is thus whatever is taught in any epoch by the majority of bishops and to be catholic is to concur with this majority.”1 Often the best way to define something is by pointing out those things which it is not. This is so in the case of Christianity whose orthodoxy developed alongside the development of the heretical Gnostics. The Gnostics may be all but gone today, but their influence lasts. My thesis is that it lasts in more than one way. While Christianity was first defined in juxtaposition to this system of beliefs, it contains within its modern form traces of Gnostic theology which, while antithetical to the Biblical message of Christianity, are common nonetheless. The importance of these traces has implications beyond simple tedious academic discussions of theology; I believe that it has a diminishing impact on the importance of social justice that should be so central to Christian belief. Introduction to Gnosticism To begin with, it is important to note that speaking of the Gnostics as if they were all of a like mind is just as deceiving as speaking about Christians all sharing the same theology and worldview. There are, however, some key points shared by most if not all groups that self- identify as Gnostics or who have been identified by academics as Gnostics.

Analysis of two case studies (the Apostolic Johannite Church and Jeremy Puma) shows how academic discourse legitimizes, chal- lenges, or reforms Gnostic identity in the twenty-irst century. Transformations and inventions of ancient Gnostic religion in the twenty- first century take place in a crowded field of discourse.1 here are dozens, per- haps hundreds of organized Gnostic churches in North America.2 Prominent artists, writers, and intellectuals claim to be Gnostics and produce works that 1. On the occasion of the eightieth birthday of Gilles Quispel, the nestor of hermetic gnosis, on 30 May 1996, a symposium was held in his honour at the University of Amsterdam. The lectures presented at the symposium by Roclof van den Broek, Peter Kingsley, Jean-Pierre Mahé, Carlos Gilly, and Quispel himself are inserted in this volume, together with eight other arti- cles written by the same authors, for the most part already published else- where but for the occasion translated from Dutch into English. The lion's share (almost 200 pages in total) is made up by six essays written by Quispel, preceded by three scholarly contributions by editor and introducer Van den Broek. The title of this book is somewhat misleading, since diverse - articles especially Quispel's essays cover a period protracted until Goethe and Novalis. Nevertheless the volume can be typified as a com- pendium of scholarly insights in the Egyptian and Hellenistic roots of the gnostic and hermetic tradition in the western culture.

Another Look at the Original Setting of the Gospel of Thomas
THOMAS IN EDESSA? ANOTHER LOOK AT THE ORIGINAL SETTING OF THE GOSPEL OF THOMAS Pierluigi Piovanelli Over the course of the last fifteen years, Jan N. Bremmer has constantly promoted, and made a significant contribution to, the study of Christian apocryphal texts, especially the second and third-century Acts of John, Acts of Paul, Acts of Peter, Acts of Andrew, and Acts of Thomas,towhich the prestigious series he founded in and still directs, ‘Studies on Early Christian Apocrypha’,was originally dedicated.1 In spite of the lack of external evidence, the anonymity of their authors, and the great fluidity of the texts, Bremmer was able to identify a plausible setting for at least four of these ‘magnificent five’ apocryphal acts of the apostles, originally written in Greek between the middle (Acts of John and Acts of Paul) and the end (Acts of Peter and Acts of Andrew) of the second century, probably in Pisidia and Bithynia (central and northern Asia Minor), the only exception being the Acts of Thomas, which was written in Syriac in the s, almost certainly in Edessa (Osrhoene).2 Asinthecaseofancient novels, the apocryphal acts of the apostles were particularly appreciated by upper-class and well-educated women;3 in contrast however, their 1 Previously known as ‘Studies on the Apocryphal Acts of the Apostles’, ten volumes have been published so far—J.N.
