winchestercityfc 6 “THE CITIZENS POST” DAVO’S DIARY

Really disappointing day and to bow out against Kidlington in the manner we did was not what we wanted!

To be honest we didn't really get our game going today, from the very first minute we didn't have that bit of zip about us that we have had so far this year. First half was largely a non event and whilst they shaded it we came in 0-0.

2nd half carried on in a fairly flat manner for both sides, we then created the best chance of the day with a great move but their Keeper made a miraculous save from Coxy when it looked like 1-0. We then lost Oli Bailey to injury which was a blow but Chalky came on and looked to create a bit for us. Fairly quickly though they went up the other end and got ahead with a well worked goal. We made a couple more tactical changes to get back in the game and we had our best spell at that point and deserved our equaliser when Josh Harfield bundled over the line after good work from Rob Carr. Looked like only 1 winner at that point but a momentary lapse allowed them into score and go 2-1 up! We gave it a good go to get back in it again, we lost Adam Tomasso to a sending off late on and they got a 3rd as we had to throw men forward.

Disappointing to lose! Have to say the way you won the game was far from dignified, totally unnecessary! Also the performance of the officials today was not great that's for sure and only added to the frustration we are feeling right now!

Gutted to go out, we now have to bounce back in an extremely tough game next weekend against 2nd place Bristol Manor Farm! Big weeks training to prepare for that ahead.

Up the citizens.

Davo 7 “THE CITIZENS POST” CHAIRMAN’S COMMENTS

This afternoon a welcome return to the league following two cup exits. Firstly, we fielded a very young team against AFC Totton in the Southern League Cup. Our up and coming stars played well and were just 1-2 down against a strong Stags side until late in the game when Totton overpowered them with two late goals. And secondly, we played our full first team last Saturday away against Kidlington in the FA Trophy. They are a team who impressed us when they beat us at home early in the season and once again they put in a committed and competitive performance to beat us three one. Our goal came from Josh Harfield, a reward for his hard work on the day. Our visitors today played Cinderford in the Trophy and were convincing four one winners and go on to the next round. And so to the league today, which is now our only priority. This season there are unusually three promotion places, two automatic and one play off place. We therefore need to take advantage of this situation and are currently doing so as we sit on fourth spot in the league with one game in hand. Bristol Manor Farm are also near the top in second place and so we are two places and one point behind them with one game in hand. Today’s match therefore is of great importance to both teams and so expect a close and exciting game! We are at home on Tuesday night to Paulton Rovers in a rearranged game following their success in the FA Cup, after putting us out of that cup at their place. They have gone on to the Fourth Qualifying Round tie this Saturday against Sutton from the National League. Who can forget Sutton’s run in the FA Cup last season ending in that fantastic home match against the might Arsenal? Enjoy the game this afternoon! Regards

Paul Murray Chairman Winchester City Football Club 8 “THE CITIZENS POST” IN THE OPPOSITION DUGOUT… BRISTOL MANOR FARM CLUB HISTORY

Bristol Manor Farm Football Club was formed for the 1960/'61 season before disbanding and reforming for the start of the 1962-63 campaign.

Our ground here at ‘The Creek’ used to be the site of the Port of Bristol Authority Sports & Social Club. In 1965 when the authority moved to new premises, Manor Farm took it over, making it our permanent home.

Having a base of our own enabled the club to apply successfully to join the Somerset Senior League where we made good progress through the divisions. In 1977 the club decided to step up to the Western League, joining the First Division for the start of the 1977-78 season.

The Club were crowned Division 1 Champions for 1982-83 and since that promotion to the Premier Division of the Western League we have played most of our football at that level.

The last decade at the club has certainly been the most ambitious period of our history.

The club went into the 2009-10 campaign with reasonably high expectations for an improvement on the previous season's fifth placed finish but sadly the 'Farm never really looked like challenging for the top spot. It was a different matter in the FA Vase, however, where the club enjoyed our best success for years, making it to the fourth round proper before going out to eventual semi-finalists Whitehawk.

An exciting run during the 2010-11 FA Cup competition saw us win a penalty shoot-out against Almondsbury Town and hold Basingstoke Town to a draw before being pipped by a single goal in the replay. The club were the proud winners of the Premier Division's 'Best Match day Hospitality' award, no doubt due to all those home-made cakes! 9

2011-12 was the most successful season in the history of the club to that date. We won the GFA Challenge Trophy after beating Shortwood United 5=0 in a thrilling final and this was followed three days later with another cup triumph when we beat Willand Rovers in extra time to finally lift the Les Phillips Cup.

We lost the GFA Trophy Final to Bristol Academy in 2012-13 however and finished third from bottom of the Premier Division. After good service to the club, Manager John Black decided it was time to stand down.

The start of the 2013-14 season saw the beginning of a new era at Bristol Manor Farm FC when current boss Lee Lashenko took over the Manager's job. Fresh from winning the title with Bishop's Sutton, Lashenko quickly made an impact with Manor Farm.

An FA Cup run that saw us put nine goals past Oldland Abbotonians and then seven past Lymington Town quickly brought us to the attention of the national press. The tabloid photographers had a field day down at The Creek photographing the team with the FA Cup and a variety of 'farmyard' accessories and costumes – it was a brilliant and fun day that everyone here will never forget! The First Round Qualifying Round tie against Corsham Town then ended in a 4-4 draw with Manor Farm winning the hard fought replay 1-0. We then also held Bridgwater Town to a 4-4 draw in the next round before narrowly going out 2-1 in the replay.

The club continued to fight for top spot in the league and also applied for promotion to the Southern League. We finished the league season as Runners-up but were unsuccessful in our promotion bid when Larkhall Athletic were accepted ahead of us. It was the highest-placed finish in the club’s league history, however, breaking club records for goals scored and fewest goals conceded.

In 2014-2015 Bristol Manor Farm missed out on promotion to the Southern League by 3 points, allowing Slimbridge to go up instead. We did win the GFA County Challenge Trophy however with a 2-0 win over local club Shirehampton.

During an epic 2015-2016 season an heroic run in the FA Vase took us to within sniffing distance of Wembley with a notable comeback win in the fifth round, overcoming Sunderland RCA 3-2 and a long return trip to the North-East for a Quarter Final showdown with Morpeth Town. On a heavy pitch The Portwaymen were unlucky to go out with Morpeth scoring a breakaway goal in the dying seconds after Farm had laid virtual siege to The Highwaymen's goal throughout the second half. Morpeth went on to beat Hereford FC 4-1 in the showpiece Wembley final.

We finished third in the Western – missing out narrowly again on promotion but winning the GFA County Challenge Trophy for the second season in succession with a record 9-2 win over Lydney Town in the final. On a happy night at Ashton Gate our former Exeter City and Truro City striker Dean Stamp also won the Bristol Post 'Footballer of the Year' award for his astonishing tally of 59 goals in all competitions.

The many highlights of Manor Farm's triumphant 2016-17 season will be forever woven into the fabric of the club's history as we finally secured that elusive promotion to the Southern League in emphatic style, amassing 102 points and scoring over 100 goals on the way to being crowned as Western League Champions.

We also unluckily missed out on a second FA Vase Quarter Final in succession with another narrow 2-1 defeat in a fifth round tie in front of 1,500 partisan fans at Bromsgrove Sporting FC.

An extraordinary unbeaten league run of 21 games between September and March (19 wins and 2 draws) went a long way to securing the coveted league title for Manor Farm however, which was eventually clinched with three games to spare following a 2-0 win at local rivals Hallen on Good Friday. 10 “THE CITIZENS POST” IN THE OPPOSITION DUGOUT BRISTOL MANOR FARM PLAYER PROFILES

18 MALCOLM’S REPORT

KIDLINGTON 3 WINCHESTER CITY 1

Winchester went out of the F A Trophy losing 3-1 to a Kidlington team that had already beaten them in the league.

Winchester started with the line-up that had helped them enjoy convincing league wins against Mangotsfield and Barnstaple in recent weeks, although with Danny King injured Andy Jenkinson filled the left back role. Kidlington's team consisted mainly of Kidlington based players, although local soccer enthusiasts may recall Anaclet Odhiambo playing for Eastleigh alongside Craig McaLLister and David Puckett, and his brother Eddie being on Southampton FC's books, with both brothers being in the home team's line up.

Early on Rob Flooks and Pat Cox for Winchester had shots blocked, while at the other end good play by Lewis Coyle and Mark Janes put Anaclet Odhiambo in a good position, but his effort was off target. Sam Warrell in the home goal just beat Olly Bailey to the ball, but generally the first half saw both teams break well from defence, but with their attacks being cut out before any damage could be done to the opposing defence.

Kidlington introduced Darius Browne as substitute and he quickly made an impact as a lively wing back with his pace and energy. He won a free kick on the left and this eventually led to their goal with captain Tom Franklin setting up Lewis Coyle for his second goal against Winchester this season. Shortly before this Sam Warrell who had also performed heroically at Winchester made an excellent save from Pat Cox after good work by Rob Carr and Olly Bailey.

Shortly after the goal Bailey's whose pace looked threatening at times had to go off injured. However Winchester did draw level when following a goalmouth scramble with several players from both sides involved, it was Josh Harfield who finally bundled the ball over the line, although members of the Kidlington contingent thought the ball had never actually crossed the line.

Having drawn level it was disappointing to concede three minutes later when Browne crossed for fellow substitute Lance Williams to score. After this Kidlington looked the more likely team to score a further goal and Elliott Osborne-Ricketts had a powerfully struck shot only just off target.

In added on time Adam Tomasso gave a free kick away which led to Coyle setting up Browne for the third goal.

It is fair to say that some members of the Winchester contingent felt the rub of the green in the referee's decisions did not go their way, but overall Kidlington who are at home to Slough in the next round were the better team on the day, with our performance not being as good as those in recent weeks.

Even though more than half of the teams in our division will go out of the F A Trophy in this round it is disappointing to go out of the competition, but minds must now be focussed on Saturday's home game against a Bristol Manor Farm team that have made an impressive start to the season following promotion. Following Saturday's game the club are having a Race Night at the club. 19 “THE CITIZENS POST”

21 Western League XI 2 - 2 FA XI 125th Anniversary Match

Wednesday 11th October 2017

The Western League’s 125th anniversary celebrations got under way on Wednesday night when the representative XI took on an FA XI at Oakfields, home of Melksham Town FC, and the excellent 532 crowd were treated to 90 minutes of faced paced football fitting of such an occasion, writes Kerry Miller.

The driving rain and wind which threatened to drown out the whole night thankfully abated early enough to entice a crowd to watch the match at the newest ground in what is the third oldest league in the country. Guests from many clubs, leagues and FAs attended as England C team manager Paul Fairclough brought a side picked predominantly from Southern League clubs based in the south and west. Gosport Borough, Salisbury, Basingstoke Town, Dorchester

Town, Wimborne Town and Winchester City were represented as well as Mangotsfield United and Larkhall Athletic more locally and both teams showed what they could do in a fast paced opening on Melksham’s immaculate playing surface which is made quick passing football.

TV and media were also well in attendance and a scattering of club flags showed allegiance to individuals, many of whom had important league and cup matches just three days later.

The FA XI had early much of the possession and looked to stretch the Darren Perrin’s Western League side’s defence and Larkhall’s Joe Tumelty tested Bradford Town’s Jamie Bartlett from distance to warm up the crowd, many of whom would rarely have seen football played at such pace and with such accuracy. The Western League then broke from the initial shackles and imposed themselves on the game and following a defensive error, Melksham’s Dan Demkiv found himself free around the edge of the penalty area but Salisbury’s keeper Charlie Searle was equal to his effort at the expense of a corner. Bradford’s Dan Cottle then tried his luck but was denied by Searle, but he could do nothing on nine minutes as the Western League took the lead. Demkiv’s ferocious pace took him clear on the right and his low cross was converted with a lack of fuss by Demkiv on his home turf.

With their next attack the Western League almost made it two when Bitton’s Joe McLennon brought a fingertip save out of Searle and it forced the FA XI out of their shell briefly and Salisbury’s Tom Whelan and Wimborne Town’s Luke

Holmes both went c lose. The Western League always looked faster to the ball and the FA were having real trouble in coping and after McLennon had fired just over it was 2-0. Demkiv expertly beat the offside trap two yards inside the FA half and having clear of the defence he slid home the second on 22 minutes.Basingstoke Town’s Sam Smart then attempted to ignite a revival on the half hour when his whipped cross was just cleared away from Wimborne’s Toby 22

Holmes but the speed of the game was beginning to tell and referee Sam Allison cautioned Mangotsfield United’s

Jake Elliot, Luke Holmes and Salisbury’s Elliot Wheeler in a short spell before the break, all for foul which were clumsy without being malicious. Searle made the final save of the half to keep out a Demkiv effort and the Western League XI were well deserving of their half-time lead.

Fairclough reacted at the break by introducing Gosport Borough keeper Matt Cafer, Winchester City’s Josh Harfield,

Dorchester’s Billy Lowes and Basingstoke’s Jack McKnight and it seemed to work as his side took over in the main and had much more of the ball. Unsurprisingly the pace eased but Elliott went close with a shot which went just over and McKnight was wide with another and Perrin then rested some of his hard working squad, introducing Luke Alden from championship-chasing Willand Rovers, Asa White from Odd Down and Clevedon Town’s Ryan Gissing.

The FA got stringer as the game went on and it was no surprise when Basingstoke’s Dan Bayliss drove home their

first from the left with around 12 minutes left to set up a grandstand finish. Melksham’s Mike Perrott twice went close to clinching the win but in the end it was denied them as Smart slung in a cross and final substitute Callum Bunting from Basingstoke converted to make it 2-2 for a fitting climax to what was a fine game and an occasion worthy of a

fine league.

Western League squad:

Jamie Bartlett, Dan Cottle, Ricky Scott (Bradford Town), Warren Maidment, Mike Perrott, Dan Demkiv, Luke Ballinger and Rob Brown (Melksham Town), Luke Alden, Luke Mortimore (Willand Rovers), Jack Packer (Chipping Sodbury

Town), Jake Hodgson, (Cribbs FC), Ollie Barnes and Ryan Gissing (Clevedon Town), Asa White (Odd Down).

FA XI squad:

Matt Cafer (Gosport Borough), Elliott Wheeler, Jake Wannell, Tom Whelan, Charlie Searle (Salisbury), Dan Bayliss,

Sam Smart, Callum Bunting and Jack McKnight (Basingstoke Town), Jake Elliot (Mangotsfield United), Billy Lowes

“THE CITIZENS POST” AROUND THE LEAGUE – NEWS The EVO-STIK League's clubs were trending on Twitter on Non-League Day 2017!

After regularly making the social media platform's UK 'heat maps' on matchdays since the start of the season, a host of the EVO-STIK League's clubs were lighting them up again on Saturday despite stiff competition from the Rugby League Grand Final at Old Trafford and the Japanese Grand Prix.

In the Buildbase FA Trophy, hashtags linked to the preliminary round ties between Scarborough Athletic and South Shields, Bamber Bridge at home to Brighouse Town and Cleethorpes Town and Hyde United were all trending along with those connected to Stalybridge Celtic and Warrington in the EVO-STIK League Premier and the big derby day clash between Stourbridge and Halesowen Town at the War Memorial Ground. The EVO-STIK League's stats have already been soaring on social media over the last four weeks thanks to the Emirates FA Cup with the Twitter account expected to break through the 17,000 followers mark within days after attracting more than 1.9 million views during a September that saw clubs competing in three qualifying rounds.

Impressively, no matchday so far this season has failed to attract less than 100,000 views on Twitter and 10,000 or more on Facebook, peak audiences often far out- stripping those figures.

The EVO-STIK League's new Vole account also continued to outstrip the Premier League's big guns on the new social media platform from Europe having grown to 2,272 followers within weeks of being set up despite being initially targeted at fans of the pro game. Four EVO-STIK League clubs have also created their own accounts after signing up to a platform dubbed the Instagram of football. The popularity of the EVO-STIK NPL Show's podcasts also played their part in boosting an increasing online presence after returning for the 2017-18 campaign to build on their best ever listening figures last term.

We welcome Bristol Manor Farm to Winchester for this afternoon’s game. Today’s opponents are performing well following promotion last season and at the time of writing were second in the table despite a disappointing home loss to Evesham, who sit just below them.

I first heard of Bristol Manor Farm when they were a Western League club and they joined Division 1 of this league in 1977/78 which was the second season in which the league operated with two divisions. After six seasons in which they never finished in the lower half of the table they were promoted to the Premier Division. Last season they were Premier Division champions having finished in the top four in each of the three previous three seasons. They have also made an impact in the F A Vase in the last two seasons reaching the quarter finals in 2015/16 where they were beaten by eventual winners Morpeth Town and the 5th round last season.

I have had no previous first hand experience of Bristol Manor Farm football club, but note that in the 1984/85 F A Vase they played Eastleigh three times before winning the second replay. In the era when second replays were permitted rather than have a penalty shoot out after a first replay it was a lot more common for teams to play each other three times in a week.

After the game a race night is taking place in the club and it is also physio Jo Brocksom’s birthday and we wish a her a very happy birthday. My school reunion is also taking place in the nearby Cart and Horses pub just before the game and I have in fact named one of my horses for the race night after our former school headmaster. Interestingly enough we had a subbuteo league in my school days and one of my colleagues named his team Winchester Albion and he was a better player than me which meant I played for a 0-0 draw from the outset when we were in direct opposition. With their impressive goalscoring record to date in this league I have no doubt that Bristol Manor Farm will play with a greater degree of adventure when playing against a Winchester team than I did at subbuteo all those years ago.

The good face of soccer was shown on a couple of times last month. Firstly in relation to the East Cowes Vics match in which I mentioned Alan Reed and Joe Reed in my programme notes. The current secretary of East Cowes Vics is the nephew of Alan and the grandson of Joe and he forwarded his comments on to his sister. The second was the fact that despite having had a difficult season to date and been beaten 3-0 the majority of the Mangotsfield contingent all stayed behind for a drink or two afterwards

Congratulations to Oli Bailey and Josh Harfield on their representative selections. I understand that Oli is currently a student at Exeter University, so he has shown great commitment to our cause in turning out for us every week and he is well supported by his family and friends who come to cheer him on.

Bristol Manor Farm were only formed in 1961 and began life in the Somerset Senior League.and quickly progressed through the divisions of this league prior to joining the Western League. They play at The Creek former home of Port of Bristol Authority Sports and Social club. Amongst their former players are Alan Crawford and Dave Mehew both of whom played over 240 games in the football league, and in Alan’s case over 400. 28 “THE CITIZENS POST” CUP HONOURS FA Vase: Winners (2004)
