We launched this year’s Awards scheme at The Charleston Trust’s Barns and Galleries, a beautiful restoration of Sussex Barns juxtaposed with contemporary new gallery spaces in the iconic centre of the Bloomsbury Group. A winner of a 2019 Sussex Heritage Trust Award, friends and supporters heard from the Director of Charleston, Nathaniel Hepburn and Trustee of Charleston, Jolyon Brewis. Matthew Larkin, Simon Knight and Stephen Herrington Of course, in February, none of us could at The Charleston Trust’s Barns and Galleries have known the unprecedented times we would all face in just a few months and as to the prestige and regard the Awards we approached the original deadline for scheme commands across the whole of the Awards, at the end of March, that we Sussex, including Brighton & Hove, and would shortly be in lockdown. The Trust much further afield, that we received 69 revised its timetable for the year with an expectation that Award entries would be entries this year. Every year we are thankful lower this year. It therefore is testament for the continuing support of our sponsors, judges and all those who enter the Awards scheme, but never more so than this year.
Like many businesses and charities, we face an uncertain financial future, with our 2020 events and fundraising schedule cancelled. We were therefore extremely grateful to the generosity of Lord and Lady Gage, who hosted our biennial black- tie dinner at Firle Place at the end of 2019. The dinner raised over £19,000 to support the Trust’s charitable aims and objectives. In 2021, we shall be hosting our biennial dinner at Parham House at the kind invitation of Lady Emma and Mr James Charles Anson, Dr Anne Keay and Simon Knight Barnard, and I look forward to updating at the Biennial Dinner at Firle Place you on this at a future date. The dinner also sadly marked the retirement of Dr John Godfrey, who had officially stepped down as Chairman at the Annual General Meeting. Our President, Lord Egremont took the opportunity to thank John for his tireless and unending support of the Sussex Heritage Trust and presented him with a plaque to represent his six years as Chairman. I am delighted to announce that John continues to support the Trust as Patron.

DAVE WILKIE FOR WORK TO REAR LEAD DOME, HIGHMEAD MANOR, EASTBOURNE A four-storey residential Victorian building which was converted into flats. The work was to renew the existing rear lead dome, incorporating insulation and replacing timber decking and any other decayed timber, retiling the pitched tiled roof slopes and flat roof adjoining the dome.

The original tired and dilapidated flat mineral roof canopy was to be re-roofed with an ornamental lead work design. The new roof was hand bossed with welded corners and sand casted lions’ heads were added for a striking visual eect.

LIAM O’NEILL FOR WORK TO COMPTON HOUSE, CHICHESTER The brief was to fully re-roof Compton House, a late 18th-century house which was being fully renovated at the time. The resulting roof included new rafters, lead work for dormers, gutters and cast- iron pipe collar, slating the roof and turret and preserving the oak panels as part of the original fabric of the building.

Work included hand nailing riven chestnut lath and hand whittling timber pegs to fit the random sized holes of the peg tiles supplied. All tile cuts were by hand with the use of hot lime for the bonnets, ridges and verges.

PETERSFIELD FORGE FOR WORK TO WESTERTON HOUSE, CHICHESTER Petersfield Forge (Traditional Blacksmiths) were approached to design and build a series of galvanised structures to complement the flint walls, stone terraces and Georgian style house. The two trellises and three rose arbours are characterised by galvanized bars forming open panels so that no part of the garden is obscured.

RICHARD SOAN ROOFING SERVICES FOR LARGE HOUSE IN EAST SUSSEX A character country home dating back to possibly around 1914. Work included replacing peg and nibbed tiles with handmade clay tiles, eco-friendly sheepswool insulation with a specialist stonemason employed to replace the stone copings. This project was voted as the winning project for workmanship at the UK Roof Tiling Awards 2019.

Additionally, regenerating North Street, knitting into the historic Lanes, improving wider linkages and the public realm were other key aims.

THE OLD STABLES HOME FARM, PIPPINGFORD PARK, NUTLEY TN22 3HW To repair an 1850’s disused farm building and repurpose whilst changing the appearance of the original building as little as possible. The conversion to o¡ce use used oak beams produced on the estate and using new handmade peg tiles since none of the originals had survived.

RESHINGLING OF CHURCH SPIRE ST ANDREW’S CHURCH, THE TYE, ALFRISTON, POLEGATE, BN26 5TL BEFORE The Grade I listed church was built around 1360. Reshingling was urgently required to the central Tower with broached Spire, clad since in cedar shingles last replaced in 1966. Many shingles had warped, been blown away or been attacked by woodpeckers and were replaced with hand-split oak shingles which were interleaved with stainless-steel strips.

By 2010 the original 60-foot-long peach house was in serious disrepair. The restoration included using Ironko timber, fixing the cast iron winding gear and the glass was hand cut with a beaver tail, in the original style.

PARSONAGE FARM KIRDFORD The brief was to restore a listed Sussex barn dating back to the 18th-century. RINGMER PASSIVHAUS RINGMER A new build dwelling, replacing a redundant asbestos dairy barn. The three-bedroom house is formed from a structurally insulated panel system frame which stands on an insulated raft, ensuring a thermal bridge free construction. The walls and roof are clad in Siberian Larch, with feature galvanised steel verges and rainwater downpipes completing the detailing.

The former Police Sergeant’s house, built in BEFORE the 1970s within the remaining parts of the walls of the infamous Petworth House of Correction was an uninspiring collection of dark, cold, small spaces. The brief was to create a contemporary, light-filled, energy e¡cient space, and provide an entrance which aorded more privacy to the residents, without compromising on natural daylight.

Terry Adsett FRICS The winner of the Sussex Heritage Person of the Year Award 2019 was Terry Adsett, who has practised in Sussex for over 40 years as a Chartered Building Surveyor. He also, unusually, is RIBA Part 1 Qualified, bringing a technical clarity alongside architectural design to schemes from conception to completion. Terry ran his own successful architectural practice in Petworth for 27 years before joining Savills (Smiths Gore at the time) as a partner in 2000. He retired in 2013, standing down as the head of Architectural & Building Surveying Department. Projects on which Terry has worked in Sussex include the Coultershaw Heritage Site, the major restoration of a 16th-century Grade II farmhouse on the Glynde Estate and Petworth House Tennis Court Extension. The last two projects both won Sussex Heritage Awards, the Tennis Court extension recognised in 2019 as “a superb result, meeting all the aspirations of the interested parties and making extensive use of locally sourced materials”. In addition, Terry has been Chairman of the RICS Awards (South East Region) alongside an accomplished career as a watercolour artist, having exhibited at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours in London. On presenting the Award to Terry last year, former Chairman, Dr John Godfrey said “Terry has made an invaluable contribution to the conservation and enhancement of the built environment of Sussex and South East England over many years.
The winner of the 2020 Sussex Heritage Person of the Year Award will be announced at the Awards ceremony on Wednesday 25th November 2020.
