Create in me a clean heart, O God,

and put a new and right spirit within me. welcome to the ‘de-cluttering’ issue Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me. (Psalm 51. 10-11) I don’t know about you, but when the mood takes me, I sometimes attempt a spot of de-cluttering. Everything comes out from some cranny, I spend a happy hour or three looking it all over (again), how to set about it and then it’s time to cook the next meal, so the whole lot goes hastily P 9 back. It’s a bit easier to do the job for someone else, but even then… After my father died, I found an orderly pile of all his bank statements, dating back to 1946 (my father was an accountant). It seemed outrageous to dispose of a collection so religiously preserved—but I did.

In asking for a clean heart, the Psalmist trustfully handed over his internal de-cluttering to God. I wonder if he knew what a rigorous process that might turn out to be. Most of us have hidden stores of guilt, unresolved issues, irresistible temptations, resentments, and words of apology we’ve never brought ourselves to utter. Who said de-cluttering was painless? what to do with it And yet how wonderful to be freed from these things by the loving God p19 who said: I know the plans I have for you: plans to prosper you and not 11 p10- to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29.11) where to re - stock And there were two things above all other that the Psalmist trusted God never to take away: his presence, and his Spirit.
