It is fitting that we set aside this day to honor the men and women who serve our country in the Armed Forces. Their contribution to our freedom and safety is measureless. Our national security depends on the maintenance of alert military forces as a deterrent to any possible aggressor. I invite all citizens to learn more of our Armed Forces and their pre- paredness to meet any challenge. and as Commander-in-Chief, I urge all my countrymen to join me in honoring our servicemen and women on this Armed Forces Day, 1964. -Lyndon B. THE SCENE ON THE LEFT, despite a few quirks in costuming, has a familiar ring to it.the beginning of the hunt.before the show. In reality it's the moment preceding an event seen far too little in Guantanamo Bay.a Horse Show. Early in May a group of young men and women known as the Jumping Jacks and Jills gave a display of horsemanship that was highly entertaining to those who are familiar with the sport and out-and- out exciting to the uninformed. The reason for a good show lies in the hard work ano practice of the young- sters under the tutelage of Connie Dempsey, a horsewoman with no lack of experience and knowledge. The students are a credit too. The young lady on the right with her companion probably never had so much fun learning.

Spectator sports can be just as enter- taining as actually playing. Last week, the gun-buff was in his element watch- ing the finals of the ComTen rifle and pistol tournament. Incidentally, half the team which will represent the 10th Naval District in the stateside matches is from Gitmo. Indianapolis has it's "500" and Gitmo has it's Pinewood Derby, thanks to the Cub Scouts. Over 150 people gathered in Deer Park last Saturday to watch the races and witness the presentation of over 70 awards to the boys of Pack 401. Also on Saturday was the championship golf playoff between Ramon Carnet and LT Steve Kier of VU-10. The topping on a big week sports-wise in Gitmo was the excellent Horse Show which was held Sun- day at the Family Corral Show and Train- ing area. Nothing to do in Gitmo? Look around! The matches were held the second week in May and winners awards presented last Saturday.

BURNING UP THE TRACK, (almost), are some flashy entries in the Pinewood Derby which just goes to show that fun CAN BE FOUND in small packages. The hand-made cars, the heaviest of which can be no more than five ounces, are a product of cooperation between a determined Cub Scout and one or two parents. The track (right) is rigged only to keep the cars on the right course. The re- sults of these miniature "500's" are always the same.fun for everyone.
