[email protected] Western Coordinators Linda Peter/Larry DeGennaro One last item of interest for you, I’m sure most of you know that Joe Lombardi writes the [email protected] cover article every year for our April newsletter. Last April Joe wrote about running into [email protected] in Sag Harbor. The article said Jimmy told Joe he was ready to retire, NJ Coordinator Tracey McGowan especially after the fall in Australia, and in the future would probably only be playing in [email protected] his Margaritavilles. Well, I sent that newsletter to Jimmy, like I occasionally do, and it 732-668 -1620 seems to have made the rounds in Jimmy’s office and caused quite an uproar. Jimmy’s Ticket Liaison Tom Dalton manager ran into Joe a few weeks ago and said that everyone was upset that Jimmy [email protected] would retire now, and couldn’t believe that he wouldn’t have told them first, including (631)-979-8337 his manager. Great job Joe can’t wait for next April. Webmaster Larry "Squid" Kiewra [email protected] Dave Pohorylo

ROAD CLEAN-UP/ SAG HARBOR CRUISE

The fall road clean-up of Highway 114/ Boat Cruise is on for Saturday

October 1st (with Raindate October 2nd).

The boat ride will be a 2 hour sunset cruise around Sag Harbor and

Shelter Island. It will pass close to Jimmy Buffett’s house and beach and neighbor,

Richard Gere’shouse. We can bring our own coolers with food and drinks and

Parrot Head tunes will be playing. We can also make stops at Murph’s Pub for drinks

& darts and/or The Corner Bar for lunch. The boat only takes 30 people so the first 30 people who volunteer for the road clean-up and send in a check will be on the boat. Clean-up volunteers that do not want the boat ride are welcome to help too. The boat will leave about 5pm so the road clean-up can start around noon.

As usual, we'll meet in the parking lots in front of King Kullen in the Bridgehampton

Common Shopping Center a little later than usual 11:00.

Last year's cruise was a sellout! So, if you don't want to miss the boat, please e-mail me at [email protected] if attending and send your check (payable to MPHC) for $26pp as soon as possible.

Stamford Grammy-winning musician earns surprise honor Ralph MacDonald

Longtime Stamford resident honored during final concert in July jazz series

STAMFORD -- With family surrounding him onstage and even more admirers watching from the wings and in the audience, Grammy Award-winning percussionist, composer and Ralph MacDonald was honored with a day all to himself Wednesday, just before entertaining the crowd on the final evening of the Jazz up July music festival.

MacDonald, a 35-year Stamford resident, was emotionally overcome by the surprise honor, which came in the form of a proclamation by Mayor Michael Pavia.

"We have the greatest resources in the world and we are about to see one of them, live and in person," Pavia said. "Ralph MacDonald, today is your day on behalf of the citizens of Stamford."

Speaking for her family, MacDonald's daughter, Nefra-Ann, 25, thanked all those in attendance, noting, "My dad has dedicated his life to making great songs and making people happy and that has made him happy all his life."

It was the kind of night that gave him a boost, MacDonald said, after a year of significant health problems, including the discovery in September of lung cancer. It was the first time this year, for instance, that the 67-year-old has taken to a stage.

He and fellow Stamford resident Dennis Collins, a 19-year resident, performed a set of songs at the start of the concert, the finale of the Stamford Downtown Special Services District's first such monthlong event, paving the way for the evening's headliner Roberta Flack. The award-winning singer has worked with both men during her career.

"To have Ralph and Roberta both on stage is heaven to me," said Collins, who sang several of MacDonald's songs, including "Just The Two of Us," which brought on more emotions during a night where tears and smiles were plentiful.

For most of MacDonald's career, he has worn many hats, from percussionist to composer, songwriter to producer.

He has recorded or performed with some of the top names in business, including James Taylor, Billy Joel and Grover Washington Jr. MacDonald also has worked with Harry Belafonte, with whom he got his start, Paul Simon ("Graceland" and others) and many other artists. In the recent past, he has toured as a member of Jimmy Buffett's band and has performed with the Toph-E and The Pussycats.

As a producer, performer and songwriter, he has earned multiple Grammys, including those for "Calypso Breakdown," which was included on the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack, and "Just The Two of Us." And, along with songwriter Bill Salter, he wrote "Where is The Love," which earned Flack and Donny Hathaway a Grammy.

"She just sang it beautifully," MacDonald said.

During the course of his career, MacDonald has been nominated for a Grammy eight times.

He was born in Harlem, N.Y., to parents who had immigrated to the from Trinidad. With a father who was a percussionist (the Calypso performer "Macbeth The Great"), MacDonald said it made sense that he would pursue the craft.

"I do a little bit of everything," he said, which over his career has included contemporary jazz, funk, disco, R&B and pop, among other genres. "I've played with so many people."

"My parents were from the West Indies," MacDonald said. "I had no right to know only one kind of music. Music is music."

As for Stamford, it has served as a welcome home base.

"Stamford has been great," he said. "Nice and peaceful."

The evening had the element of coming full circle.

Joe Richichi, 65, who was standing off to the side of the stage, remarked that it was at about this time 35 years ago that MacDonald arrived in Stamford. Initially, Richichi had been introduced through a mutual friend to serve as MacDonald's attorney. By sheer happenstance, the two men learned they were soon going to be living across from one another.

"This really has me choked up," Richichi said.

Although Richichi did not have a proclamation to give 35 years ago, he did manage to get this sign on the Palace Theatre marquee: "Stamford welcomes Ralph MacDonald."

"I wanted the city to know who was joining our ranks," he said.

Buffett’s Been Partying in the Hamptons

Jimmy Buffett played a show at Jones Beach Theater on Friday night and then headed up Long Island to the Hamptons for a couple parties over the weekend.

On Saturday night, Buffett attended Apollo in the Hamptons, a fundraiser for the Apollo Theater, at the home of Ronald Perelman. Jon Bon Jovi and Jamie Foxx performed, among several others.

On Sunday night in Montauk a launch party was held for Chris Blackwell‟s „Blackwell Fine Jamaicain Rum.” Buffett was at the beach party and was asked what he‟s been doing on his summer break:

“You know what I did this year? Nothing,” he said. “I hung out, enjoyed my kids and the weather.”
