Annie Oakley Topic Guide for Chronicling America (http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov) Introduction Annie Oakley (1860-1926) was an American sharpshooter and exhibition shooter born in Darke County, Ohio, as Phoebe Ann Mosey. When she was five, her father died, and Annie learned to trap, shoot and hunt by age eight to help support her family. In 1875 (though some sources say it was in 1881), Annie met her future husband, Frank E. Butler, at the Baughman & Butler shooting act in Cincinnati, while beating him in a shooting contest. They were married a year later, and in 1885, they joined Buffalo Bill’s Wild West where she was given the nickname “Little Sure Shot.” Considered America’s first female star, Oakley traveled all over the United States and Europe showing off her skills. Oakley set shooting records into her sixties, and also did philanthropic work for women’s rights and other causes. In 1925, she died in Greenville, Ohio. Important Dates . • Butch Cassidy Roamed Incognito in Southwest New Mexico
Nancy Coggeshall I For The New Mexican Hideout in the Gila Butch Cassidy roamed incognito in southwest New Mexico. Hideout in the Gila utch Cassidy’s presence in southwestern New Mexico is barely noted today. Notorious for his successful bank Butch Cassidy roamed and train robberies at the turn of the 20th century, incognito in southwest Cassidy was idealized and idolized as a “gentleman out- New Mexico wilderness Blaw” and leader of the Wild Bunch. He and various members of the • gang worked incognito at the WS Ranch — set between Arizona’s Blue Range and San Carlos Apache Reservation to the west and the Nancy Coggeshall rugged Mogollon Mountains to the east — from February 1899 For The New Mexican until May 1900. Descendants of pioneers and ranchers acquainted with Cassidy tell stories about the man their ancestors knew as “Jim Lowe.” Nancy Thomas grew up hearing from her grandfather Clarence Tipton and others that Cassidy was a “man of his word.” Tipton was the foreman at the WS immediately before Cassidy’s arrival. The ranch sits at the southern end of the Outlaw Trail, a string of accommodating ranches and Wild Bunch hideouts stretching from Montana and the Canadian border into Mexico. The country surrounding the WS Ranch is forbidding; volcanic terrain cleft with precipitously angled, crenelated canyon walls defies access. A “pretty hard layout,” local old-timer Robert Bell told Lou Blachly, whose collection of interviews with pioneers — conducted PROMIENT PLACES - between 1942 and 1953 — are housed at the University of New OUTLAW TRAIL Mexico. What better place to dodge the law? 1.

  • Women's History Is Everywhere: 10 Ideas for Celebrating in Communities
Women’s History is Everywhere: 10 Ideas for Celebrating In Communities A How-To Community Handbook Prepared by The President’s Commission on the Celebration of Women in American History “Just think of the ideas, the inventions, the social movements that have so dramatically altered our society. Now, many of those movements and ideas we can trace to our own founding, our founding documents: the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. And we can then follow those ideas as they move toward Seneca Falls, where 150 years ago, women struggled to articulate what their rights should be. From women’s struggle to gain the right to vote to gaining the access that we needed in the halls of academia, to pursuing the jobs and business opportunities we were qualified for, to competing on the field of sports, we have seen many breathtaking changes. Whether we know the names of the women who have done these acts because they stand in history, or we see them in the television or the newspaper coverage, we know that for everyone whose name we know there are countless women who are engaged every day in the ordinary, but remarkable, acts of citizenship.” —- Hillary Rodham Clinton, March 15, 1999 Women’s History is Everywhere: 10 Ideas for Celebrating In Communities A How-To Community Handbook prepared by the President’s Commission on the Celebration of Women in American History Commission Co-Chairs: Ann Lewis and Beth Newburger Commission Members: Dr. Johnnetta B. John Henry ‘Doc’ Holliday (1851-1887) was a man devoid of fear, reputed to have killed up to fifty men (‘Caught in Denver’, 1882). Yet journalists were astonished to discover he was also a genteel, frail-looking ‘consumptive’ living with incurable tuberculosis. Holliday’s consumptive body fascinated contemporaries – partly because this impairment was traditionally associated with a Romantic, sentimental disabled identity quite incongruous with his brutal reputation, and partly because he seemed physically incapable of violence: one journalist even marvelled that his slender wrists could hold a gun (‘Awful Arizona’, 1882). Yet these early descriptions emphasised above all the elective aspects of his physical presence – his polished manners and exquisite dress and grooming – and presented his consumptive body not as a passive object of pathology or pity but, rather, as an essential component of a persona defined by self-possession, neatness, and ‘a suavity of manner for which he was always noted’ (‘Caught’, 1882). Holliday’s contemporaries delighted in the debonair consumptive gunfighter, but this delight did not last long after his death.
