RUSSIA Art and Power in Putin’s Russia BY SASHA PEVAK The separation between art and power in Russia’s recent history has never been clear-cut. Soon after the fall of the USSR, contemporary art, namely actionism in the 90s, openly criticized society and entered the political sphere. This trend continued after Vladimir Putin’s election in 2000. Russian identity politics in the 2000s were based on four pillars: state nationalism with the Putin’s “power vertical”, the vision of Russia as a nation-state, Orthodox religion, and the myth of the Unique Russian Path, reinforced by the notion of “sovereign democracy” and the idea of the omnipresence of a fifth column inside the country 1. The will to consolidate society around these values provoked, according to political scientist Lena Jonson, tensions between the State and culture, especially as far as religious issues were concerned. These issues were the cause of the trials against the exhibitions “Attention! Religion” (2003) and “Forbidden Art – 2006” (2007), shown in Moscow at the Andrei Sakharov Museum and Public Centre. The latter staged temporary events and activities based on the defence of Human Rights. For part of the national opinion, the Centre symbolized democracy in Russia, whereas for others it represented an antipatriotic element, all the more so because it was financed by foreign foundations. In 2014, the Department of Justice catalogued it as a “foreign agent,” on the pretext that it carried out political actions with American subsidies 2. In 2003, the exhibition “Caution, Religion!”, organized by Aroutioun Zouloumian, was vandalized by religious activists several days after the opening 3. -

Ze praten te snel, te slordig en vooral te monotoon, zo luidt de klacht. Zou dat wijzen op een verandering? Wordt de Nederlandse zinsmelodie inderdaad steeds vlakker? Twee onderzoeken bieden meer duidelijkheid. Ik heb twee zoons in de adolescente leeftijdsgroep, zo tussen de 16 en de 20. Toen ik ze nog dagelijks om me heen had (ze zijn inmiddels technisch gesproken volwassen en het huis uit), mocht ik graag luistervinken als ze in gesprek waren met hun vrienden. Dan viel op dat alle jongens, niet alleen de mijne, snel spraken, met weinig stemverheffing, en vooral met weinig melodie. Het leek wel of ze het erom deden. Een Amerikaanse collega, die elk jaar een paar weken bij mij logeert om zijn Nederlands bij te houden, gaf ongevraagd toe dat hij in het algemeen weinig moeite heeft om Nederlanders te verstaan, behalve dan mijn zoons en hun vrienden. Een paar jaar eerder was ik in een onderzoek beoordelaar van de uitspraak van 120 Nederlanders, in leeftijd variërend van puber tot bejaarde. Mij viel op dat de bejaarden zo veel prettiger waren om naar te luisteren. Niet alleen spraken ze langzamer dan de jongeren, maar vooral maakten ze veel beter gebruik van de mogelijkheden die onze taal biedt om de boodschap met behulp van het stemgebruik te structureren. -

Russian Museums Visit More Than 80 Million Visitors, 1/3 of Who Are Visitors Under 18
Moscow 4 There are more than 3000 museums (and about 72 000 museum workers) in Russian Moscow region 92 Federation, not including school and company museums. Every year Russian museums visit more than 80 million visitors, 1/3 of who are visitors under 18 There are about 650 individual and institutional members in ICOM Russia. J. Kohnstamm LL.M. Curriculum vitae Jacob Kohnstamm has served as chairman of the Dutch Data Protection Authority from August 2004 until August 2016. Between 2008 and 2010 he also served as the elected vice chairman of the Article 29 Data Protection Working Party (WP29). He was subsequently elected chairman of that body in 2010, and re-elected for a two-year mandate in 2012. WP29 is an independent advisory body composed of representatives of the various data protection supervisors in the European Union. Between 2011 and 2014 Kohnstamm was chairman of the Executive Committee of the International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners. As a preparation for hosting that Conference in Amsterdam in 2015, he initiated the Privacy Bridges project in 2014. The Privacy Bridges project united twenty U.S. and EU privacy specialists to find pragmatic and workable solutions to overcome the differences in privacy legislation in all parts of the world; solutions that have as primary goal to improve the control of users over their data. Since his retirement as chairman of the Dutch DPA in August 2016, Kohnstamm serves as vice-chair of the Royal Commission on Parliamentary Reform and as chairman of the Dutch Euthanasia Review Committee. Between 1999 and 2004, prior to his appointment as chairman of the Dutch DPA, Kohnstamm was a member of the Senate of the States General for D66 [Liberal Democrats]. He also was chairman of a large number of organisations and committees, including the Police IT Control Board. He was state secretary for Home Affairs between 1994 and 1998, in particular responsible for Urban Policy. -

The deceptive art deal of Van Beuningen Koenigs Collection Wednesday begins the lawsuit by the heirs Koenigs at Museum Boijmans A case that shows the less attractive side of patron Van Beuningen. • Arjen Ribbens October 18, 2016 at 16:55 A great art collection often occurs at the expense of previous collectors. This is showed once again by the documents of the lawsuit that was filed Wednesday in Rotterdam against Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Six heirs of businessman Franz Koenigs demand the return of hundreds of Old Master drawings, which are given to the museum on loan in 1935. This loan was part of a previous, much larger loan which was partly donated to the museum? That is the question at the present proceedings. The history of the great loan - 46 paintings and 2,000 drawings - is worth telling. She makes clear to which behaviour an obsessive collector is capable of. The protagonist in this story is Daniel George van Beuningen (1877-1955), director of the Coal Trading Association (SHV) and one of the Rotterdam harbour barons who before the war ruled the city and its workers. It starts in April 1940 In April 1940, when the Nazis set Europe ablaze, Van Beuningen does an art purchase that will be central to the next trial. The Jewish owners of the Amsterdam banking Lisser and Rosenkranz want to flee to the United States. In all haste they try to liquidate their bank. Part of their property is the loaned art collection of Franz Koenigs to Museum Boijmans, which the businessman pawned to the bank after the stock market crash. -

Four hundred years later, Christie’s joins the celebrations of the anniversary of the master’s birth. An important group of fifty-five etchings by the artist from the collection of Dutch industrialist and patron, G.A.H. Buisman Jzn. will be offered alongside the 29 March sale of Old Master, Modern and Contemporary Prints in London. “This superb private collection lends a fascinating insight into the technique and mastery of the artist’s graphic oeuvre and with estimates starting at just £1,500 offers an excellent opportunity to collect an original by this famous artist in his 400th anniversary year,” said Richard Lloyd, Head of Christie’s Print Department. Rembrandt was a multi-talented artist, acquiring international fame not only as painter and draughtsman but also for his graphic works. He explored different forms, styles and subjects throughout his artistic life, with his first etching dating to circa 1626 and his last from 1665. The strength of his reputation as one of the most important graphic artists remains to this day. The collection to be sold at Christie’s reflects the broad range of subjects that Rembrandt addressed from portraits, and self-portraits, to landscapes, allegorical scenes, mythological and biblical stories as well as animal studies. -
