Programming & Speakers Guide 2016-2017 | 5777 uhsjh vk vrcuja rhgf vhubcv ohkaurh “ the built-up, like a city that is joined together”

Dear Friends, Our Sages teach that “Jerusalem was not divided amongst the tribes” and so all of the city’s dwelling places — even the “private” ones are considered public property. (Yoma 12a) Jerusalem belongs to each and every Jew, no matter where he or she might live; it is the great unifier of the Jewish people.“Jerusalem the built-up, like a city that is joined together.” In only a few months from now, on Yom Yerushalayim, Jews all over the world will mark the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Jerusalem, and the six miraculous days that changed the course of history. Multitudes of Jews from radically different cultural and religious backgrounds will gather together, as brothers and sisters, to celebrate the reunification of our holy city — and the unique bond of unity that the city represents. In this spirit of unity, we at Suburban Torah will dedicate this coming year to the theme of Ahavat Yisrael, of love and appreciation for our fellow Jews. For Ahavat Yisrael is not simply an important Mitzvah; it is, in the words of Rabbi Akiva, the “Klal Gadol b’Torah” — the great underlying principle of the Torah. This year, we will dedicate special Shabbatot to celebrating the incredibly diverse communities and customs of Jews, each of whom have contributed so much to the vitality of Am Yisrael. And we will devote ourselves to the study of Ahavat Yisrael, exploring the mystical bond that unites the Jewish people and the practical ways through which we must express our love for one another. Finally, if possible, please join us in Jerusalem for Yom Yerushalayim! Book your tickets now — the 50th anniversary will be an “Am Yisrael experience” that is not to be missed! May 5777 be the year when we, and all of Am Yisrael, merit to walk as one people, together, in the streets of Jerusalem!
