  • THE ALL-IN-ONE AUDIOBOOK Debut Novel Has Wanted to Become a Writer
Starred Review. “Canny, seductive and utterly transfixing.” — Booklist These stories are all true, but only somewhere else. As early as he can remember, the hopelessly unreliable—yet hopelessly earnest—narrator of this remarkable THE ALL-IN-ONE AUDIOBOOK debut novel has wanted to become a writer. From the jazz clubs of Manhattan to the villages of Sri Lanka, Kristopher Jansma’s irresistible narrator will be inspired and haunted by the success of his greatest friend and rival in writing, the eccentric and brilliantly talented Julian McGann, and endlessly enamored with Julian’s enchanting friend Evelyn, the green-eyed girl who got away. After the trio has a disastrous falling-out, desperate to tell the truth in his writing and to figure out who he really is, Jansma’s narrator finds himself caught in a never-ending web of lies. As much a story about a young man and his friends trying to make their way in the world as it is a profoundly affecting exploration of the nature of truth and storytelling, The Unchangeable Spots of Leopards is a warm, witty, and inventive literary tour de force that heralds Jansma as a bold, new American voice. About the Author Read by Edoardo Ballerini Kristopher Jansma is a Edoardo Ballerini is an lecturer at Manhattanville award-winning narrator of College and SUNY Purchase audiobooks and has appeared and writes a monthly column in over 40 films and television for Electric Literature’s blog series, including recurring The Outlet. For each of these topics, students will examine the challenges and changing nature of entrepreneurship and innovation that are unique to the arts. • Iterating Between Tools to Create and Edit Visualizations
Iterating Between Tools to Create and Edit Visualizations Alex Bigelow, Steven Drucker, Danyel Fisher, and Miriah Meyer visualization in B a generative Initial A Visualization visualization visualization in C toolkit a drawing tool Non-transferable Non-transferable elements (code, elements (swatches, UI components, etc.) blends, etc.) B A Changes through Changes through A interaction drawing B Non-transferable Non-transferable C C changes changes Merged A Visualization B C Fig. 1: An example combining edits to a visualization from two different tools. (Left) A visualization — initially a pie chart — is edited with a generative visualization toolkit on the left, such as D3, as well as with a drawing program on the right, such as Illustrator. Changes from both tools are merged into the final visualization. (Right) For such a process to be possible, we propose a bridge model that describes out edits from two tools can be combined. This model identifies edits that can be shared, as well as those that cannot, and merges them together with a careful consideration of potential conflicts. The resulting visualization can then reintegrated into the two tools, supporting further iterations. Abstract—A common workflow for visualization designers begins with a generative tool, like D3 or Processing, to create the initial visualization; and proceeds to a drawing tool, like Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape, for editing and cleaning. Unfortunately, this is typically a one-way process: once a visualization is exported from the generative tool into a drawing tool, it is difficult to make further, data- driven changes. In this paper, we propose a bridge model to allow designers to bring their work back from the drawing tool to re-edit in the generative tool.

  • THE CUTTING EDGE in the Early Hours of a Quiet, Weekend Morning in Manhattan’S Diamond District, a Brutal Triple Murder Shocks the City
READ BY EDOARDO BALLERINI DANGEROUSLY GOOD. DISTINCTIVELY DEAVER. Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs return to New York City to confront a killer terrorizing couples at their happiest — and most vulnerable. THE CUTTING EDGE In the early hours of a quiet, weekend morning in Manhattan’s Diamond District, a brutal triple murder shocks the city. Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs quickly take the case. Curiously, the killer, known as the Promisor, has left behind a half-million dollars’ worth of gems at the murder scene, a jewelry store on 47th Street. As more crimes follow, it becomes clear that the killer’s target is not diamonds, but engaged couples themselves. The Promisor vows to take the lives of men and women during their most precious moments— midway through the purchase of an engagement ring, after a meeting with a wedding planner, trying on the perfect gown for a day that will never come. The Promisor arrives silently, armed with a knife or gun, and a time of bliss is transformed, in an instant, to one of horror. Soon the Promiser makes a dangerous mistake: leaving behind an innocent witness, Vimal Lahori, a talented young diamond cutter, who can help Rhyme and Sachs blow the lid off the case. They must track down Vimal before the killer can correct his fatal error. Then disaster strikes, threatening to tear apart the very fabric of the city—and providing the perfect cover for the killer to slip through the cracks. JEFFERY DEAVER is the #1 international bestselling author of more than thirty-five novels, three collections of short stories, and a nonfiction law book.
