I am pleased to participate in this new edition of Canadian Sailings magazine, a genuine refer- ence in the realms of logistics and maritime transport, fields whose vitality is attributable to the know-how of stakeholders such as you, the members of the Grunt Club. The St. Lawrence River is a strategic maritime route used by shipowners and cruise companies from around the world. It offers a wealth of opportunities that we must grasp to promote a mod- ern maritime economy. It is also a vast ecosystem whose integrity must be protected. For this reason, we must pave the way for a genuine blue economy based on sustainable, intelligent maritime transport, and the acquisition and pooling of new knowledge and business and tech- nological solutions. I am convinced that we will achieve this end by relying on education, training, research and in- novation. Accordingly, the colleges and universities in the Réseau Québec maritime, maritime industry stakeholders and clusters of excellence in the realms of digital technology and naviga- tion intelligence, security of supply and freight logistics will be called upon to responsibly develop the St. Lawrence River as an economic driving force. I am indeed eager to work with you on these projects. I would like to pay tribute to the members of the Grunt Club, who are unquestionably con- tributing to the vitality of the Canadian and Québec maritime economies. This 84th Annual Gala affords an excellent opportunity to discuss the exciting challenges that maritime transport poses. I am delighted that it has become a tradition. Welcome to Montréal, and have a pleasant evening! François Legault

In memory of Bruce Allen Field

With the passage of time our memories tend to fade, but with the recent passing of Bruce at the age of 86, a member of the Grunt Club for several decades, we are left with a huge physical loss, but retain the legacy of his goodwill and service to community. Bruce attended nearly every event and function of the Grunt Club for many years as our official photographer leaving an unprecedented trove of photos and videos, primarily of the marine industry, dating back to the sixties. His photos, seen on the huge screens in the dining room during the annual Grunt Club dinner, tells a story of long days and hundreds of hours, editing and preparing this montage, expounding his love for all of us. We are grateful and graciously thank the family of Bruce Allen Field for sharing him with us. We will truly miss Bruce and wish him eternal rest.

20 2018 ANNUAL GRUNT CLUB ISSUE 2018 GRUNT 1-71.qxp 2018-11-27 2:54 PM Page 21 THE GRUNT CLUB INC. – HISTORY MONTREAL’S MARINE COMMUNITY

The history of The Grunt Club dates back to the early 1930’s when a small number of marine-oriented men decided to form a nautical organization primarily to foster the spirit of good fellowship throughout the industry in the Port of Montreal. The name of the Club was allegedly derived from the grunts and groans which bellowed out from the group in response to the suggestions offered by each in attendance. The late Barney Bolan was elected the first President and from those humble beginnings The Grunt Club has grown to over 350 members – all associated in some way with water transportation and who can meet in an atmosphere of friendship and congeniality.

The Club held its first general meeting at the Queen’s Hotel on February 2nd, 1934. Those present at that meeting voted unanimously to incorporate The Club under the laws of the Province of Quebec and to secure the necessary charter – the appropriate action being taken by a committee consisting of members who had arranged the group’s early functions.

Since that time The Grunt Club has become exceedingly well known to most people concerned with shipping. An ever popular Annual Dinner is held each December at which approximately 1,350 members and friends attend from all parts of Canada, the and even overseas. During the year The Club organizes golf tournaments, a picnic, a children’s Christmas party, a curling bonspiel and a Mariners’ House of Montreal Benefit Luncheon. The Club regularly donates to Mariners’ House of Montreal, Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation and Hôpital Sainte-Justine. As well, three bursaries per year are given to L’ Institut maritime du Québec à Rimouski.

THE GRUNT CLUB DONATES

The Grunt Club’s support of various institutions is well known. This support has generally been in the form of annual donations and this year is no exception.

Our long-standing relationship with the Mariners’ House, who is our largest recipient, to date, has received funds well in excess of $390,000 from the club.

For the past 22 years, we are proud and fortunate enough to be able to donate funds, in the form of annual bursaries, to the Institut maritime du Québec à Rimouski.

Additionally, with the continuous support of our membership at the various events throughout the year, we have been able to add both of the children’s hospitals to our list of beneficiaries.

The Montreal Children’s Hospital and l’Hôpital Sainte-Justine have both received donations in upwards of $20,000 each over the past nine to ten years.

The Board of Directors of the Grunt Club is pleased to assist these selected recipients in this noble fashion and will continue to do so with the response from our generous members.
