Match background

Chelsea FC have fallen behind in each of their four games in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League before their renowned team spirit and determination pulled them round and it has earned them another crack at familiar opponents in the shape of Liverpool FC who block their passage to a first appearance in the final of the competition.

• It was the Merseyside club who ended Chelsea's dreams two seasons ago in a tense and tightly-contested semi-final and in Chelsea's third last-four contest in four seasons, José Mourinho's team will be looking to make amends and continue their recent domestic superiority over Rafael Benítez's men.

• The tie mirrors that in the 2004/05 campaign when Chelsea staged the first game. They had to be content with a 0-0 draw after Liverpool's defensive organisation carried the day while the Anfield return two weeks later hinged on Luis García's fourth-minute goal which took his team on to glory in a memorable final in Istanbul against AC Milan.

• The teams for that first leg at Stamford Bridge on 27 April 2005 were: Chelsea: Čech, Johnson, Carvalho, Terry, Gallas, Makelele, Tiago (Robben 59), Lampard, Cole (Kežman 78), Gudjohnsen, Drogba. Liverpool: Dudek, Finnan, Carragher, Hyypiä, Traoré, García (Šmicer 90), Bišćan (Kewell 87), Gerrard, Alonso, Riise, Baroš (Cissé 66).

• The teams for the second leg at Anfield on 3 May 2005 were: Liverpool: Dudek, Finnan, Carragher, Hyypiä, Traoré, García (Núñez 84), Hamann (Kewell 73), Bišćan, Gerrard, Riise, Baroš (Cissé 60). Chelsea: Čech, Geremi (Huth 76), Carvalho, Terry, Gallas, Makelele, Tiago (Kežman 68), Lampard, Cole (Robben 68), Gudjohnsen, Drogba.

• The Premiership sides were paired together again in last season's UEFA Champions League group stage when two 0-0 draws maintained the close rivalry and ensured they followed each other into the knockout rounds, Liverpool as group winners and Chelsea one point behind in second place.

• So after four meetings in Europe's premier club competition, Chelsea are still to score against Liverpool let alone defeat them. It is in contrast to their recent results in domestic meetings with Chelsea winning five of their six Premiership encounters since Mourinho arrived at Stamford Bridge, including all three at home where they have not conceded. They were also in the ascendancy when the teams met in the 2005 League Cup final, winning 3-2 after extra time at the Millennium Stadium with Mateja Kežman's strike proving decisive.

• Liverpool gained a measure of revenge by winning last season's FA Cup semi-final 2-1 at with García again on target and John Arne Riise also finding the net, Didier Drogba pulling a goal back for Chelsea. Benítez's team also lifted this season's FA Community Shield against the same opponents at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff after a 2-1 victory.

• Overall the clubs have met on 145 occasions with Liverpool winning 66 and Chelsea 50, while 29 have ended in draws.

• Chelsea will hope they can lay the foundations for a passage to the Athens final via their home form. They recorded three wins with no goals conceded in the group stage. In the quarter-final they were held 1-1 at home by Valencia CF and won through by virtue of a 2-1 away win with Michael Essien scoring the late winner. Andriy Shevchenko had equalised on the night – as he had done in the previous round in the first leg away to FC Porto.

• The draw with Valencia, in which Didier Drogba took his goal tally in the tournament to six, means Chelsea have lost at home only once in 15 UEFA Champions League outings under Mourinho – against Barcelona in last season's first knockout round. They have conceded goals in only three of their last ten home games in the competition although their defence has been breached at Stamford Bridge in each of the last two rounds.

• Having guided Porto to glory in 2004, Mourinho is looking to become only the third coach – after Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983) and Ottmar Hitzfeld (BV Borussia Dortmund 1997, FC Bayern München 2001) – to win the European Champion Clubs' Cup with two different teams.

• Compared to their London rivals, Liverpool had a much more comfortable progression to the last four, winning 3-0 at PSV Eindhoven to virtually end the Dutch side's challenge. A 1-0 home victory courtesy of Peter Crouch, who also scored in the first game, then sealed a convincing aggregate success. and Riise were the other scorers in Eindhoven.

• The five-time European Cup winners have suffered only one defeat on their travels this season, the 3-2 reverse at Galatasaray SK on 5 December which came when they were already confirmed as section winners. They have won three of their five away games with the other drawn and have lost only two of their last 16 away games in the competition, a run which includes last season's three qualifying rounds but not the 2004/05 final in Istanbul.

• It is the fourth successive season that Chelsea have been involved in games against English rivals in the UEFA Champions League. The first came against Arsenal FC in the 2003/04 quarter-final, Chelsea drawing 1-1 at home before winning 2-1 at Highbury. The next two campaigns brought them up against Liverpool each time.

• After defeating Arsenal, Chelsea were involved in their first UEFA Champions League semi-final and were expected to overcome AS Monaco FC. However, they lost the first leg 3-1 and then failed to hold on to a 2-0 lead in the return in London, with Frank Lampard scoring their second. The game eventually finished 2-2.

• Chelsea's only other tie against English opposition in UEFA club competition came in the 1970/71 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup semi-final when they won both legs 1-0 against the holders City FC, and went on to beat Real Madrid CF in the final.

• The defeat of Chelsea two years ago was one of only two Liverpool victories in eight games in UEFA club competition against English clubs. Their other matches produced four draws and two defeats with just three goals scored and five conceded.

• In the 1972/73 UEFA Cup, they drew the holders Tottenham Hotspur FC in the semi-finals. They took a 1-0 lead from the home leg to White Hart Lane where Steve Heighway's goal in a 2-1 defeat meant eventual winners Liverpool progressed on away goals.

• In the 1978/79 European Cup, Liverpool, the holders, met the English champions Nottingham Forest FC in the first round. Brian Clough's team won 2-0 at home and held on 0-0 at Anfield.

• This is Liverpool's eighth European Cup semi-final and they have a formidable record, suffering an aggregate defeat only on the first occasion they made it to the last four. That was in 1964/65 when they faced FC Internazionale Milano and after winning the first leg 3-1 went down 3-0 in Italy.

• Their other aggregate victories before beating Chelsea came in 1976/77 against FC Zürich, 1977/78 (VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach), 1980/81 (Bayern), 1983/84 (FC Dinamo 1948 Bucuresti) and 1984/85 (Panathinaikos FC). In their 14 individual matches their record is W8 D3 L3.

• The second leg will be played on 1 May at Anfield. The winners will face either Manchester United FC or AC Milan in the final in Athens on 23 May and will be designated as the away team.

• Two members of the Chelsea squad - Drogba and Kalou - are hoping to become the first players from Ivory Coast to win the UEFA Champions League.

• Chelsea's hopes of retaining the Premiership title suffered a significant setback at St James' Park on Sunday as they were held to a disappointing goalless draw by Newcastle United FC. In a game of few chances the visitors went closest through Joe Cole in the dying minutes, though they were indebted to a fine stop from Čech just before the hour to deny Kieron Dyer. The result leaves Mourinho's team three points adrift of Manchester United FC who drew 1-1 with Middlesbrough FC on Saturday.

• Chelsea had gone into the match with Ballack and Makelele restored to the starting lineup after missing the midweek 4-1 win at West Ham United FC. But it was to prove an unhappy return for Ballack who limped off with a leg injury after 18 minutes following a heavy challenge from Titus Bramble and was replaced by Salomon Kalou. Shevchenko also returned to the reckoning after shaking off a minor thigh injury though there was no Robben (knee ligament damage) or Ricardo Carvalho who was replaced by Essien at centre-back.

• "I don't think Carvalho can play while at the moment Ballack can't walk. We'll have to wait and see," said Mourinho. "Over the 90 minutes Newcastle deserved a point but we could have won. I cannot ask more of my players, though – what they're doing is amazing. We didn't win but at the same time our target was always to finish this period and go in to the last four matches, including three at home, in the condition of champions. And I think we are."

• Chelsea are now unbeaten in 21 matches in all competitions though the draw ended their run of nine straight Premiership victories.

• The Blues had travelled plotting to make it three out of three against the Magpies this season, having won the reverse league fixture 1-0, and then the quarter-finals of the League Cup at St James' Park, also 1-0. Drogba scored both winners.

• Chelsea have won 24 of their 34 Premiership matches so far this season - only Manchester United FC have gained more victories (26) .

• The club have opened the scoring in more Premiership matches than any other club (27), and failed to score in only two.

• Chelsea have kept 21 clean sheets in the league this season - winning 19 and drawing two of those games - and conceded the opening goal in only five Premiership matches, better than any other club on both counts.

• The Blues have conceded one goal in 972 minutes of Premiership football - Carlos Tévez's consolation for West Ham on 18 April.

• Wright-Phillips made his 50th Premiership appearance for Chelsea at Newcastle.

• Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has spoken about the future of manager Mourinho, saying: "I would like to be clear on one thing. We support José as manager and given the level of speculation, where we are now is an even bigger achievement. Whatever you have read or heard, no lists of candidates have been drawn up, no one has been offered the job. José has a contract to 2010 and he wants to stay. We are not going to sack him, he has the club's support."

• By reaching the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, Chelsea had reached the last four of three major competitions for the first time in their history, having already won the English League Cup.

• Their other semi-final was five days after the win in Valencia as they beat Blackburn Rovers FC 2-1 at Old Trafford to set up a meeting with Manchester United FC at the new Wembley Stadium on 19 May. Lampard gave Chelsea the lead on 15 minutes with his 21st goal of the season, but Blackburn equalised just after the hour through Jason Roberts to force extra time, which was decided eleven minutes from the end by Ballack.

• Mourinho, in his first FA Cup final at the third attempt, said: "I think there is not one Chelsea supporter who does not respect these players. In extra time, we controlled the game well and the players are heroes. After Valencia which was an incredible 90 minutes, to play now this 120 minutes is superb. The boys are fantastic."

• Chelsea are in their eighth FA Cup final, and the most recent of their three wins came in 2000 when they beat Aston Villa FC in the last such encounter at the old Wembley.

• Chelsea are keeping true to the English tradition of recording a cup final song, and have appealed to fans to submit their own entries. The club said: "Don't worry if you are not in a band or do not have a great singing voice as we are simply looking for the best song."

• Not only will Chelsea meet United in the FA Cup final and possibly in the UEFA Champions League decider, but the two Premiership contenders face off in the penultimate league game of the season on 9 May in a match postponed from 14 April due to their cup exploits.

• Chelsea ensured they stayed within three points of United as they won 4-1 at London rivals West Ham last Wednesday. Wright-Phillips opened his Premiership account for Chelsea in style with two first-half goals either side of Tévez's equaliser and Kalou and Drogba added to the lead after the break.

• "The feeling is really indescribable but I have got to put it out to the lads, they have believed in me since the start and that makes it easier," said Wright-Phillips. "It is only normal the more games you play the better you get and it is starting to come through as I wanted. We knew what we had to do. We are behind United and we have to win every game to put them under pressure. It was another bridge to cross and the determination is unbelievable."

• Tévez's goal was the first time the Chelsea defence had been breached in nine Premiership games. Čech was last beaten in the 18th minute of Chelsea's 2-0 defeat at Liverpool on 20 January and, with Tévez scoring for West Ham in the 34th minute, had not conceded a league goal for 826 minutes.

• Drogba now has 31 goals for the season, the same tally as club legend Peter Osgood in his two best Chelsea seasons. Jimmy Greaves holds the record with 43 in 1960/61.

• Kalou came off the bench for his 50th appearance of his debut Chelsea season. His 19 starts are the fewest ever for a Blues' player reaching that particular half-century.

• Drogba was among the six nominees for the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year award, voted for by professional footballers in England, but finished second to Cristiano Ronaldo at the London ceremony on Sunday night.

• John Terry said last week that although he is not currently in talks about extending his contract from 2009, he is committed to the club. "I said to the club that I want to stay for life and it is as simple as that," the Chelsea captain said. "Negotiations have broken down, like they do. It is still widely open but who knows when we are going to be speaking again. I've got so many more important things on my mind. It is more important for me to be on the pitch and making sure everyone is ready going into these games. That is my role as captain and Chelsea player.”

• Ashley Cole and Geremi recently launched a Football in the Community Scheme along with Positive Futures and Battersea Early Intervention Team in south-west London, attending a five-a-side tournament as part of a project to divert young people from drugs, guns and anti-social behaviour. Cole said: "In London, especially at the moment, there are many problems with crime and young people. It is up to the individual as to how they want to live their life, but I hope by me coming here having fun with them as a group it will help them to enjoy each other's company."

• Three Chelsea players are in the England squad for the UEFA European Under-17 Championship finals in Belgium from 2 to 13 May - midfielders Michael Woods and Tom Taiwo, plus defender Nana Ofori-Twumasi. Meanwhile, Chelsea's Adam Phillip is in the England U16 squad to meet Spain at Wembley on 28 April.

• Lampard is the only Chelsea player to start all 34 Premiership matches in 2006/07. Drogba has also played some part in each league game, starting 31.

• If Lampard appears four more times this season, he will beat Ed de Goey's Chelsea record of 59 games in one campaign, set in 1999/00. John Hollins in 1971/72 set the record for an outfield player with 58, though like De Goey they were all starts while Lampard has come off the bench three times in his 56 appearances.

Liverpool

• Liverpool have reminded all interested media that the cut-off point for accreditation requests for the second leg against Chelsea on 1 May is 18.00CET (5pm local time) this Thursday.

• Nine of Liverpool's squad all played when AC Milan were beaten in dramatic circumstances in the 2005 final: Jerzy Dudek, Steve Finnan, Sami Hyypiä, , Harry Kewell, Xabi Alonso, Steven Gerrard, John Arne Riise and Luis García. Of that list, only the latter - who scored the only goal of the semi-final tie with Chelsea two years ago - has no chance of featuring in the final for a second time because of injury.

• Alonso is the only Liverpool player to have featured in all 12 UEFA Champions League matches to date, including qualifying.

• Carragher featured in all six Group C games for the Merseyside club, playing the full 90 minutes on each occasion. He then did the same in both legs against Barcelona and in the first game with PSV, although he then sat out the return. Jermaine Pennant and Peter Crouch have also made eleven appearances in the competition this season.

• Carragher became the first current Liverpool player to reach 50 appearances in the UEFA Champions League in the first leg against PSV. The English international defender has played one more game than Riise, who is on 49, and five more than Dudek. Hyypiä has featured on 42 occasions.

• January signing Álvaro Arbeloa featured for the first time in UEFA club competition in the first leg with Barcelona and kept his place for the return, playing 90 minutes on each occasion and although he missed out in the first leg against PSV, he returned for the second match.

• Gerrard's goal in the first leg with PSV was his 15th in the European Champion Clubs' Cup, taking him past Ian Rush's club record. "I'm a bit embarrassed to be honest," the Liverpool captain said. "Ian Rush is someone I've watched as a kid and I never dreamt I'd break one of his records. I don't think I'll be breaking any of his other ones. I'm flattered but it's not really important to me. What's more important is how well the team is doing."

• Crouch is one of four players on six goals in this season's competition, one fewer than Kaká and the same total as Didier Drogba. García - who will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury - and Gerrard have three goals to their names, one more than Fowler and Riise. Craig Bellamy has also scored in this season's competition.

• Finnan has set up four goals so far, one fewer than the competition's leading assist providers Juninho Pernambucano, who is no longer involved, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs. Bellamy has set up three goals to date, one more than Kuyt and Pennant.

• Gerrard has managed 12 shots on goal so far, one more than Crouch but seven fewer than Kaká who has had the most. The Liverpool captain has had eight shots wide, one less than Kuyt and two fewer than Crouch with Francesco Totti - who is no longer involved - leading the way in that respect on 15.

• Kuyt has been caught offside nine times, three more than Bellamy but eight fewer than Mohamed Tchite, Jefferson Farfán and Francesco Totti, the competition's most flagged players who are all no longer involved.

• Only Manchester United FC, with 66, have had more shots on target than Liverpool's total of 63. Liverpool have also had 58 shots wide, the joint lowest total together with United.

• The Merseyside club have therefore had a total of 121 shots, more only than Chelsea's total of 117 among the four teams in the semi-finals.

• With 17 goals in their first ten games, Liverpool have scored fewer goals only than United's total of 20.

• With 131 fouls committed Liverpool have been penalised least of the four semi-finalists.

• Liverpool won 38 corners in their first ten matches, the lowest total of the sides left in the competition.

• A Liverpool player has been flagged offside on 25 occasions, also the lowest total among the semi-finalists.

• Kuyt will return from suspension against Chelsea having picked up his third caution of this season's competition in the first leg with PSV. Pennant is one caution away from a ban.

• Gerrard, Carragher, Fowler and all took part in the UEFA celebration match between Manchester United FC and a Europe XI on Tuesday 13 March at Old Trafford, Manchester.

• Finnan was 31 on 20 April, four days after Rafael Benítez celebrated his 47th birthday.

• González is hoping to become the first Chilean footballer to win the UEFA Champions League.

• Liverpool confirmed a place in the third qualifying round of next season's UEFA Champions League with a 2-0 defeat of Wigan Athletic FC at Anfield on Saturday afternoon, a victory that took them four points clear of fourth-placed Arsenal FC with three games left to play. Kuyt, who started up front with Crouch, headed the home side in front a minute before the half-hour and wrapped up the points with his and Liverpool's second of the match in the 67th minute.

• "It is important for us to have qualified for the Champions League next season with three games to go and we can now concentrate on the semi-final," said Benítez. "We had to be patient but controlled the game and I am pleased for Kuyt. He always works hard for the team and is a very good finisher, as he showed with his two goals. I wanted to rest some players for this match and it was an almost perfect day for us because we have no injuries."

• Alonso returned to the starting lineup having missed the midweek win against Middlesbrough FC with a slight strain, while Bellamy was available again after suffering a knee injury in the second leg against PSV and came on for Crouch just past the hour.

• Gerrard began the match on the bench, the first time this season he had not started a Premiership game, although he did feature as a late substitute. In his absence, Carragher took the captain's armband.

• Liverpool were without only long-term absentees García (knee), Aurelio (achilles) and Kewell (septic arthritis).

• Riise made his 300th appearance for Liverpool against Wigan, the 55th player to achieve that feat. Pepe Reina, meanwhile, featured for the club for the 100th time, the third Spaniard to reach that landmark after Alonso and García.

• Liverpool are unbeaten in their last eight games in all competitions, winning six and drawing twice since losing to Barcelona on 6 March, scoring 14 goals and conceding only two.

• The club have won 14 Premiership home games, fewer only than Manchester United who have won 16 matches.

• Liverpool have kept an unparalleled 13 Premiership clean sheets on home soil this season.

• Three days after the second leg with PSV, Liverpool returned to Premiership action with a goalless draw against Manchester City FC at the City of Manchester Stadium, Carragher and Pennant missing the best opportunities in the first half. Carragher, Gerrard, Finnan and Kuyt all returned having sat out the PSV match.

• "I'm disappointed with the result," said Benítez. "We started well, were moving the ball around and going forward and had a number of clear chances. We were talking before the game about the need to win this match. Now we have one point more but one game less to play."

• Liverpool did secure three more Premiership points on 18 April with a 2-0 defeat of Middlesbrough, a victory that moved the Merseyside club back into third place in the table. Gerrard was the architect, opening the scoring with a precise long-range shot three minutes before the hour and sealing the points from the penalty spot seven minutes later after Crouch had been fouled.

• "We know the qualities Steven Gerrard has and he can change games with his shots from distance," said Benítez. "He did just that for the first goal and that was the key to victory. We deserved to win but had to be patient and work hard. Middlesbrough came to play on the counterattack and get men behind the ball and sometimes it can be difficult to create clear chances when the opposition play so deep."

• Bellamy again missed the match with a knee injury suffered in the second leg with PSV, so Liverpool fielded Crouch as a lone striker with Gerrard in a supporting role. Mohamed Sissoko and Zenden returned to midfield.

• Polish international goalkeeper Dudek was an ambassador in Poland/Ukraine's successful joint bid to host UEFA EURO 2012™. The decision was announced by UEFA President at the City Hall in Cardiff, Wales on Wednesday. The UEFA Executive Committee reached its verdict by a majority of eight from the 12 votes cast after examining the three bids on the final shortlist to stage the tournament in six summers' time.

• Gerrard was once again nominated for the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year but lost out to Cristiano Ronaldo of Machester United FC. The Liverpool captain, who won the award in 2006, was included in a six-man shortlist along with Chelsea's Didier Drogba, Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs, and Cesc Fabregas.

• Kuyt has become a father for the second time after his wife Gertrude gave birth to a baby boy named Roan last Wednesday. The striker, who already had a daughter named Noelle, said: "He's very well and we're obviously both delighted with our new arrival."

• Pennant, who joined from Birmingham City FC last summer, believes he is now showing his best form at Anfield, saying: "I'm in good form at the moment, but that's as part of the team. When the team's performing it's easier to play well. Your best comes out then and at the moment I'm really enjoying my football. It's pleasing to have found a consistency level. I feel I'm having an impact on the games."

• Benítez, meanwhile, has called on his players to show their best for the rest of the season, explaining: "If you want to win the league, you need players who are going to perform for nine months and not just one or two months or three games. We only want players who are committed for the whole nine months. They must be ready to play every game. We need players who are competitors in every game and every training session."

• The manager has also reiterated his commitment to Liverpool, saying: "This is a project with my team and my club with the supporters behind us, and I am really happy with all those things together. I'm pleased with everything; we’re going in the right direction. The atmosphere here in Liverpool is fantastic. You know that at this club you can work and improve. For me, the future looks brighter here than anywhere else."

• Benítez was at Anfield on 16 April to watch Liverpool lose 2-1 at home against Manchester United FC in the FA Youth Cup final first leg. In front of 19,518 spectators, Craig Lindfield put the home side ahead early in the game but a second-half own goal from Robbie Threlfall restored parity and Sam Hewson then converted a penalty to give United a one-goal lead to defend in the second leg on 26 April.

• Anfield will once again be the venue for the FA Sunday Cup final, which will be held on 6 May. Coundon Conservative will take on Lebeq Tavern Courage in the final of a competition which was first contested in 1964/65.

Head coach profiles

Chelsea FC: José Mourinho Date of birth: 26 January 1963 Nationality: Portuguese Coaching career: SL Benfica, UD Leiria, FC Porto, Chelsea FC

Tactically astute and a superb motivator, José Mourinho has carved a reputation as the best and most scientific young coach in Europe. In 2005 he was declared a high officer of the Order of Infante Dom Henrique by Portuguese president Jorge Sampaio. The Order is the highest honour that can be bestowed upon a Portuguese citizen, recognising his achievements as manager of FC Porto and Chelsea FC.

Mourinho started working life as a teacher before being lured into football by Sir Bobby Robson as part of his staff at Sporting Clube de Portugal, Porto and FC Barcelona. After a brief nine-game spell at SL Benfica and a highly successful tenure at UD Leiria he became Porto coach in January 2002. In his first full season, 2002/03, he won the UEFA Cup and a domestic double. The next year Porto retained their league title and claimed the UEFA Champions League with a 3-0 defeat of AS Monaco FC in Gelsenkirchen.

Replacing Claudio Ranieri, Mourinho moved to Stamford Bridge on 2 June 2004 and went on to mastermind the club's first domestic title in 50 years with a record points total and just one loss, adding the League Cup. The Portuguese agreed a new five-year contract in May 2005. Twelve months later, he was celebrating a second successive Premiership title although, after seeing Chelsea again fall short in the UEFA Champions League, it is Europe which will take much of his focus in 2006/07. Liverpool FC: Rafael Benítez Date of birth: 16 April 1960 Nationality: Spanish Playing career: Real Madrid CF B, CP Parla, CD Linares Coaching career: Real Madrid CF (youth coach), Real Valladolid (assistant coach), CA Osasuna (assistant coach), CD Tenerife, CF Extremadura, Valencia CF, Liverpool FC

Rafael Benítez has stamped his authority on Liverpool FC since his arrival from Spain on 16 June 2004. Former Primera División stars Xabi Alonso and Luis García blended perfectly with locals like Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher as Benítez immediately guided the Reds to UEFA Champions League glory. Liverpool's recovery from 3-0 down against AC Milan and subsequent penalty shoot-out victory was one of the greatest finals ever. Although the holders were eliminated in the 2005/06 first knockout round, Benítez still oversaw an FA Cup triumph.

After spending his playing career in the lower leagues as a midfielder with Real Madrid CF B, Benítez coached youth players at Madrid before taking charge of CD Tenerife and CF Extremadura - impressive spells which earned him his big break at Valencia CF in 2001. He led the club to their first league title for 31 years in 2002, repeating the trick in 2004 when they also won the UEFA Cup in Gothenburg.

That 2-0 victory against Olympique de Marseille was his final game before being lured to Liverpool, a club starved of league honours since 1990. The Reds' continental glory in 2004/05 has yet to be matched in the Premiership with fifth- and then third-placed finishes but there was an FA Cup triumph last May. Benítez again masterminded a dramatic comeback, with Liverpool recovering from a two-goal deficit against West Ham United FC to draw 3-3 and then prevail on penalties.

UEFA information

Violence in football UEFA President Michel Platini continues to speak out vehemently against the problem of violence in football. In his column in the latest edition of the official UEFA publication uefadirect, Mr Platini said: "Football is not war, nor is it a battle. It is not a matter of life or death... any act of violence, cheating and contempt must be punished with the utmost severity. There is no room for tolerance of such behaviour."

Calling on the game itself to do all it can in tandem with others, he said: "Football's leaders absolutely need the help of the public authorities, which is why we are doing everything we can to ensure effective cooperation with and between police forces throughout Europe. Even if it cannot overcome violence single-handed, football does have full responsibility for its own area of activity... there is no excuse whatsoever for seeing players fighting on the field, club officials tolerating racism in their stadiums, or coaches creating a climate of hatred by making inflammatory statements."

Manchester celebration Last month's Celebration Match at Old Trafford, Manchester not only provided a night of excitement for fans and TV viewers – it has also generated much-needed funds for charity causes. The 13 March game between Manchester United FC and a Europe XI, which marked the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome and United's half-century in European competitions, raised £1.3m (€1.9m) for the Manchester United Foundation.

The foundation's aim is to influence positive change within communities, empowering young people through innovative and educational programmes, and developing greater understanding of social issues through education. In addition, a partnership with UNICEF and nine UK charitable partnerships makes a significant impact on a local, national and international level.

Final accreditation UEFA has released details of the media accreditation process for the UEFA Champions League final, including a new registration and accreditation process. The final of the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League will take place at 20.45CET at the Athens Olympic Stadium on Wednesday 23 May. Media representatives wishing to cover the final must apply directly to UEFA, and can do so as of now via the online accreditation service on uefa.com. The deadline for accreditation requests is 4 May.

UEFA is only handling accreditation requests and is not responsible for ordering telephone lines, ISDN lines or any other form of communication facilities that might be required by media representatives. All international media are asked to make telecom requests via their national telecom company as soon as they receive accreditation confirmation from UEFA. In case of cancellation due to unforeseen circumstances, please immediately advise UEFA Media Accreditation Services by email on [email protected].

Draw/match dates The draw for the remaining rounds of the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League took place at the Megaron International Conference Centre in Athens, Greece on 9 March. It featured a straight draw involving all eight clubs without seedings or country protection. As well as the quarter-finals, the draw was also made for the semi-finals, meaning teams knew who they would meet should they progress. The ceremony coincided with the official trophy handover from 2006 winners FC Barcelona to UEFA, with the European Champion Clubs' Cup being passed on to city mayor Nikitas Kaklamanis for display until the 23 May final at the Olympic Stadium in the Greek capital. uefa.com recognised uefa.com, which provides extensive online coverage of the UEFA Champions League, has been recognised in the 2007 Webby Awards, the leading international accolade honouring excellence on the internet. The official UEFA website has been chosen as an Official Honoree in the Best Home/Welcome Page and Podcasts categories. Established in 1996 and described as the "Oscars of the Internet" by The New York Times, the Webby Awards' executive director David-Michel Davies said: "uefa.com's Official Honoree selections are a testament to the skill, ingenuity, and vision of its creators."

Competition facts

UEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know?

• Teams have come back from a first-leg deficit to go through to the next stage on 18 occasions. The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in 2003/04 when the Spanish club fought back from a 4-1 defeat at AC Milan to win 4-0 at home and progress to the semi-finals.

• Fifteen ties, including three in this season's first knockout round, have been decided on the away goals rule, including five where the triumphant team lost the first leg.

• Manchester United FC hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 4-0 home success against FC Porto in the 1996/97 quarter-finals, eventually going through by that margin after a goalless return.

• Only five ties have gone to penalties. Four of these were finals – 1996, 2001, 2003 and 2005. The only two-legged tie decided on spot-kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win against on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw.

• In all, eleven ties have required extra time, including AC Milan's meeting with Celtic FC in the first knockout round this season. Along with the five ties mentioned above, four quarter-final and two first knockout round encounters have also needed an additional 30 minutes in an attempt to determine a winner.

• Real Madrid CF set a new record for knockout stage qualification in successive seasons. This was the tenth straight season since 1997/98 that they made it to this stage, moving them ahead of United, who appeared nine times in a row between 1996/97 and 2004/05. Overall, they have now played in the knockout stage eleven times, one more than United and FC Bayern München.

• Had FC Bayern München beaten AC Milan in the last eight, it would have meant the first time the UEFA Champions League final four had no representation from at least one club from either the Primera División or .

• The last European Champion Clubs' Cup season that featured not one semi-finalist from either Spain or Italy, or English for that matter, was the 1990/91 campaign.

• England's success has been matched on two other occasions in European football's premier club competition since 1992/93. In 1999/00, Valencia CF, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid CF all made it through, again with Bayern as the odd one out, with Madrid ultimately going all the way. Then, in 2002/03, Madrid gate-crashed the Italian semi-final party, as eventual winners AC Milan, FC Internazionale Milano and Juventus all contested the penultimate round.

• Teams from the same country have contested the final on two previous occasions. Madrid overcame Valencia 3-0 in Paris in 2000, and three years later Milan defeated Juventus 3-2 on penalties after a goalless draw at Old Trafford.

• In terms of semi-finals, the biggest winning margin in a single game has been three goals. AFC Ajax recorded a 5-2 home success in the 1994/95 second leg against Bayern, while there have been 4-1 victories on three occasions. Juventus did it twice at home against Ajax (second leg) and AS Monaco FC (first leg) in 1996/97 and 1997/98 respectively, and Valencia at home to Barcelona (first leg) in 1999/00.

• On four other occasions, teams won 3-0. In the 1993/94 semi-finals, played as one-off matches, home teams Milan and Barcelona beat Monaco and Porto respectively. The other instances were by Ajax at Panathinaikos in 1995/96, the only time a team has lost at home and gone through, and Valencia at home to Leeds United AFC in 2000/01.

• That 4-1 win for Juventus against Monaco in 1997/98 was part of the biggest aggregate semi-final score. The principality club won 3-2 in their home return to make it ten goals in the tie.

• Looking back to the history of European Cup semi-finals, Madrid's 6-0 second-leg win against FC Zürich in the 1963/64 edition remains the biggest victory. Eintracht Frankfurt's 12-4 aggregate success against Rangers FC in 1959/60 is the biggest two-leg total overall.

• The 2004/05 first knockout round encounter between Lyon and Werder Bremen featured more goals (12) over its two legs than any previous UEFA Champions League knockout tie – as Lyon defeated Bremen 10-2.

• United's 7-1 victory against Roma is the biggest victory in a UEFA Champions League quarter-final match. The previous best were Barcelona's 5-1 second-leg defeat after extra time of Chelsea (1999/00), RC Deportivo La Coruña's 4-0 return victory against AC Milan (2003/04) and United's 4-0 first-leg success against Porto (1996/97).

• Roma-United featured eleven goals over the two legs, a quarter-final record shared by Chelsea's 6-5 aggregate victory against Bayern in 2004/05 and Madrid's success by the same margin against United in 2002/03.

• The biggest European Cup quarter-final victory was Madrid's 8-0 first-leg defeat of Sevilla FC in the 1957/58 edition.

• There has never been a knockout tie ending goalless after two legs. Eight have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Milan's narrow victory against Celtic after extra time in this season's first knockout round.

• Clarence Seedorf is the only player to win the European Cup with three clubs (Ajax 1995, Madrid 1998 and Milan 2003). Had Bayern gone all the way, Ottmar Hitzfeld would have joined Liverpool FC's Bob Paisley – 1977, 1978 and 1981 - as the only coach to win three times, having won with BV Borussia Dortmund in 1997 and Bayern in 2001.

• Hitzfeld and Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983) are the only coaches to win with two different clubs, an exclusive club that José Mourinho (Porto 2004) could join if Chelsea go all the way.

• All four of the coaches involved in this season's semi-finals have already lifted the European Cup; Sir guided United to glory in 1999, Carlo Ancelotti's Milan claimed a sixth title at Old Trafford in 2003, the following year José Mourinho led Porto to victory and in 2005 Liverpool, under Rafael Benítez, overcame Ancelotti's Milan in Istanbul.

• Players from 28 countries have appeared in this season's competition from the four clubs in the semi-finals.

• Three of those countries – Chile (Mark González, Liverpool), Ivory Coast (Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou, Chelsea) and Korea Republic (Ji-Sung Park, Manchester United) – have never produced a winner. China is not one of those 28 countries as Dong Fangzhuo is yet to appear in the competition for United, although the forward and team-mate Park are striving to become the first Asian player to lift the famous trophy.

• Twenty-one English players have appeared for the semi-finalists this term, six more than from Italy. France (7), Brazil and the Netherlands (6), Portugal (4), Argentina and Spain (3) are the next in the list, followed by Czech Republic, Ivory Coast, Norway, Republic of Ireland and Wales (all 2). Australia, Cameroon, Chile, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, Georgia, Germany, Ghana, Korea Republic, Nigeria, Poland, Scotland, Serbia and Ukraine (all one).

• If Chelsea go all the way, it would be the first European Cup success for London. Only five capital cities have been successful in this way: Madrid (Real Madrid CF), Belgrade (FK Crvena Zvezda), Bucharest (FC Steaua Bucuresti), Amsterdam (AFC Ajax) and Lisbon (SL Benfica).

• England manager Steve McClaren, who as assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson in the 1999 triumph would particularly have enjoyed every minute of United's 7-1 victory against Roma, will be a particularly happy man. Nine of his first-choice starting UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying eleven could all be involved in the semi-finals, with Tottenham Hotspur FC goalkeeper Paul Robinson and Bayern midfielder Owen Hargreaves the only exceptions.

• Athens was awarded the 2007 final after a decision by the UEFA Executive Committee at its meeting in Tallinn, Estonia in April 2005. The Greek capital will play host to its first European final on 23 May since the venue was rebuilt to stage the 2004 Olympic Games. The stadium previously provided the backdrop to the UEFA Champions League showpiece of 1993/94, when Milan were 4-0 winners against FC Barcelona. Prior to 1994, Athens also saw the European Cup lifted in 1982/83, the year after the venue was first inaugurated. On that occasion, Hamburger SV beat Juventus 1-0. The ground also staged the 1986/87 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final when AFC Ajax were 1-0 winners against 1. FC Lokomotiv Leipzig.

Chelsea FC

UEFA club competition milestones • Although having emerged as a major force in recent years, success in the European Champion Clubs' Cup has eluded Chelsea. Their best campaigns to date in the UEFA Champions League came when they reached the 2003/04 and 2004/05 semi-finals, although the club have won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup on two occasions.

• Their first victory came at the end of the 1970/71 season where they defeated Real Madrid CF 2-1 in a final replay in Athens after the sides had shared a 1-1 draw. Chelsea will hope for similar success in the Greek capital in May 2007. Chelsea won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup again 27 years later when overcoming VfB Stuttgart 1-0, thanks to Gianfranco Zola's 70th-minute goal in Stockholm.

UEFA club competition honours • UEFA Cup Winners' Cup: 1970/71, 1997/98 • UEFA Super Cup: 1998

Ten-year record (includng current season) • Chelsea are competing in their fourth successive UEFA Champions League campaign having reached the semi-final stage in the first two seasons of that run. Overall, this is Chelsea's fifth time in the competition, and to date, every appearance has resulted in qualification for the knockout stages. This season, four victories and a draw from their six outings provided a first-placed finish in their group, two points clear of last season's European Champion Clubs' Cup winners, FC Barcelona.

2005/06 season Domestic record: Chelsea followed up their first league title for 50 years by defending their English Premiership crown in style. They finished eight points ahead of Manchester United FC to again earn direct entry into the UEFA Champions League group stage.

European record: Chelsea finished behind Liverpool FC in their group after a 1-0 defeat by Real Betis Balompié. It meant they played a group winner in the first knockout round, namely eventual winners FC Barcelona. After a 2-1 home defeat, they went out after a 1-1 away draw - their 50th European Champion Clubs' Cup match.

Competition information

UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Away goals rule: For ties in the first knockout round, quarter-finals and semi-finals, the team which scores the greater aggregate of goals in the two matches qualifies for the next round. If the two teams involved in a tie score the same number of goals over the two legs, the team which scores more away goals qualifies for the next stage. If this procedure does not produce a result - i.e if the two teams score the same number of goals at home and away - extra time of two periods of 15 minutes shall be played at the end of the second leg. If during extra time both teams score the same number of goals, away goals count double (i.e. the visiting club qualifies). If no goals are scored during extra time, kicks from the penalty mark determine which team qualifies.

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced that the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA club competitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2006/07, at least four places on this list will be reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubs from within the same association of the said club. The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the club for two seasons. In 2007/08, the number of locally-trained players in a squad will increase to six before rising to eight in 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the club between the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at least three seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21. UEFA is concerned some clubs are not training enough of their own players, but simply taking them from elsewhere. The proposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubs from simply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locally-trained players would be given a greater opportunity to play regularly in club sides - ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as a consequence.

• Financial information: UEFA says the estimated budgeted income for the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League is €750m – higher than the 2005/06 campaign revenue which amounted to CHF943m (approx. €610m). Under the competition regulations, 75 per cent of the total revenue received from television and commercial contracts concluded by UEFA, up to a maximum of €530m will go to the 32 clubs taking part in the group stage of Europe's premier club competition. The remaining 25 per cent is earmarked for European football and remains with UEFA to cover organisational and administrative costs, as well as for solidarity payments to associations, clubs and leagues.

It is also stipulated that participating clubs will receive 82 per cent of any revenue received from the same stream in excess of €530m, with the remaining 18 per cent allocated to UEFA for European football. In addition, 50 per cent of the revenue received from new media contracts concluded by UEFA will also be available for distribution to the clubs, and the remaining 50 per cent will be allocated to the above-mentioned European football portion/quota.

The gross income for 2006/07 is estimated at €750m, and according to projections, will be made up of €743.3m from TV and commercial contracts and €6.7m from new media contracts. The fixed amount to the clubs is €276.6m. Each of the 32 clubs in the group stage will receive a starting bonus of €2m. In addition, they will receive a match bonus of €400,000 per match. Performance bonuses will amount to €600,000 for a win and €300,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive €2.2m, the eight quarter-finalists €2.5m each and the four semi-finalists €3m each. The UEFA Champions League winners will receive €7m, and the runners-up €4m.

This means that a total minimum amount of €4.4m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive, at best, up to €22.7m, not counting the market pool share and gate receipts. The remaining €270.4m will be distributed according to the proportional value of each TV market represented by the clubs taking part in the UEFA Champions League, and to be split among the number of teams – four, three, two or one – participating from a given association.
