Biographical History Marjorie Tuite, O.P. (Order of Preachers) was born in 1922 and raised in New York City. She was described as “a leading voice for an equal role for women in the Roman , an

Marjorie Tuite - 1 Women and Leadership Archives Loyola University Chicago advocate for the poor and an educator on a broad range of social justice issues” in the program for her memorial service. She played a “prominent role in the civil rights, peace, and women’s movements as an activist, educator, organizer and author.”

Tuite was a member of the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs Order in Columbus, Ohio. She made her profession of vows in 1942. In addition to her degree from Fordham University in New York, Tuite received a Master’s Degree in Education Theology from Manhattanville College, also in New York, and a Doctor of Ministry from St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Chicago.

She worked in a variety of administrative, educational, and advocacy positions. From 1960-1966, she worked as an administrator at St. Vincent Ferrer High School in New York. Then, in Chicago Tuite served on the staff of the National Urban Training Center and The Archdiocesan Center for Religious Education. Finally, between 1973 and 1981, Tuite was a faculty member at Chicago’s Jesuit School of Theology.

Her organizational participation strongly reflects her commitment to social justice. Tuite served as the Director of Citizen Action for Church Women United as well as a leader within the organization. Church Women United is an ecumenical action movement in which women from different Christian denominations work together for social justice and the dignity of women. In addition, Tuite worked as the national coordinator of the National Assembly of Church Women and the National Assembly of Religious Women (previously known as National Assembly of Women Religious). In 1971, Tuite was one of the founders of NETWORK, a national Catholic justice group stressing social change through legislation. In 1982, she founded the Women’s Coalition to Stop Intervention in Central America. Over the course of her life, Tuite served on boards of nine national peace and antipoverty programs.

In the 1980s, Tuite traveled extensively through Central America in a variety of capacities. In particular, she visited Nicaragua fourteen times. Tuite met with Nicaraguan government officials, grassroots leaders, Christian atheists, and women’s groups throughout the country and bore witness to the destruction of agricultural cooperatives. She also traveled three times to El Salvador and served there in 1984 as a delegate to the First Congress on Human Rights. Back in the United States, Tuite voiced her opposition to U.S. policy in Central America through the Catholic Church and other American forums.

Tuite was also the recipient of several honors and awards: the Catholic Committee Urban Ministry Award for commitment of social justice (1978), U.S. Catholic Magazine Award for work with women in the church (1979), the Mary Rhodes Award from the Sisters of Loretto Community (1985), and the Boise Idaho Peace Quilt for her contribution to peace and justice (1985).

In 1984, Tuite and other women religious called for a dialogue within the Roman Catholic Church on sensitive moral issues. They signed an advertisement in The New York Times that called for dialogue on a woman’s right to choose to abort a fetus. A range of groups and individuals supported the advertisement. It proposed that Catholics held multiple views on the ethics and legality of abortion; however, such a statement ran contrary to the position of the Vatican, which held that abortion was immoral. Nearly eighty lay and religious people signed the New York Times advertisement in support of abortion discourse. Nevertheless, the Vatican censured the

Marjorie Tuite - 2 Women and Leadership Archives Loyola University Chicago twenty-four women religious who contributed their signatures by forcing them to recant their stance or face dismissal from their orders.

Following surgery for a pancreatic tumor, Tuite passed away due to heart failure on June 28, 1986. Her friends brought her remains to Nicaragua at her request for burial alongside the country’s heroes and martyrs. Tuite received a Christian burial in Managua, Nicaragua, in March 1987.
