Recently the American press has suffered a series of negative court decisions which have stripped the rights guaranteed them under the First Amendment. Professional and collegiate newsrooms have been searched and unpublished copy rumaged through. Courts have ordered that confidential sources be identified in more than 500 instances in 1978 alone. In the decade of the '60's there were fewer than a dozen such cases. Certainly the honeymoon-like relationship between the courts, the public, and the press has ended. There is increasing public opinion that the press must be regulated, particularly in regard to coverage of sensitive issues. One such issue is the ongoing H-Bomb controversy. Several small papers attempted to publish information containing details of how to build an H-Bomb. Their effort was aimed at asserting the threatened freedom of the press. One paper, the Progressive, was prepared to run an article last October by Howard Morland entitled "The H-Bomb Secret: How We Got It, Why We're Telling It". The article did not appear because of a court injunction. The author, publishers, and representatives of the government have been in and out of court ever since. More recently, Charles R. Hansen of Mountain View, California, submitted an In the Catbird Seat by Ross H. Miller 18-page letter describing several details of the H- Bomb. "O. K." you're saying, "so where's the X interview you promised last week?" Well, I've decided to tantalize you even more by saving it till next issue. In the meantime, you'll have to satisfy your curiosity by going to the Temple Beautiful, 1839 Geary, Fillmore, on Saturday night. In that large and faintly mystical place, you will hear L.A.'s finest punk band and be transported into that place Exene goes when she is wrapped in her music. Below X on Saturday's bill are the Dils and the Mutants, two lovable local punk bands. Just keep your shirt on. Rick. Yes, I know that Pearl Harbor and the Explosions are opening for Talking Heads at the Fox- Warfield on the very same night. 1 also know that a second show has been added, and that both shows will be explosively exciting. But, see, I'm in love with Exene and 1 must see her again before she descends into L.A. Maybe I'll see P.H.and the E's at the early show, then go to Temple Beautiful for the X show, if I can get thc bucks together. Anyone want to buy some practically new textbooks?
