WHAT WE OFFER j

PRE-SCHOOL DIVISION

Creative Pre-Ballet and Junior Ballet (Ages 3-5) These carefully designed classes allow young dancers to explore body awareness through various creative movement exercises. Musicality, listening skills and a sense of rhythm and readiness are developed through age appropriate songs and nursery rhymes. Students are introduced to preliminary through exercises and dance combinations.

Pre-Jazz (Ages 4-5) Pre-Jazz is enjoyed by all young dancers in its contemporary form. Students enjoy discovering their own sense of movement and rhythm while learning coordination, flexibility, steps and strength combinations. Classes consist of a warm-up, travelling steps and a dance combination at the end of class. All pre-jazz students are encouraged to also study ballet.

JUNIOR DIVISION - LEVELS 1 TO 4, PRIMARY ITP AND JUNIOR ITP

SENIOR DIVISION - LEVELS 5 TO 8, SENIOR & ADVANCED, SENIOR ITP, & ALL LEVELS OF PPP

Classical Ballet (Ages 6+) Our teachers are highly skilled and trained dance professionals. Beginner students will receive a rewarding and exciting experience in the technique of classical ballet, from the study of basic arm and body positions to the introduction of the "". Here, the fundamentals - ballet exercises, core practice and dance step combinations - reinforce traditional classical ballet. In the senior levels, students develop the technical, artistic and performance skills of adagio, pirouette and allegro, the prerequisites for eligibility into WSD's advanced pointe classes.

Pointe (Ages 11+ by Evaluation) Pointe is the most highly disciplined and physically challenging extension of ballet. Only technically proficient senior level ballet students who have mastered the skills of basic and advanced movement and positions will be selected to study pointe work. Physicality, stamina, stability and coordination will all be considered criteria. It is highly recommended that all new pointe students attend a minimum of two ballet classes per week in order to keep up with the technical demands.

Society of Russian Ballet Examinations (Ages 6+ by Evaluation) WSD offers the opportunity for students to take SRB certified examinations. Selection is based on a student's physical and artistic suitability, their commitment and dedication to dance, together with their suitability for exam work and the demands of classical ballet. Pupils must attain and maintain high standards in their levels in order to qualify for the certified examinations. Each year, examiners from the Society visit the school to mark and grade students on their dancing skills. WSD candidates consistently receive excellent grades and worthy recognition that is acknowledged around the world. The school also offers teaching certifications through the SRB, and many WSD graduates who have attained these high scores teach at WSD today.

Jazz (Ages 6+) WSD is proud to present a jazz program that is spirited, contemporary and comprehensive, designed to give students the technique, rhythm and style basics to progress to advanced combinations and explore different jazz styles. From warm-ups to traveling steps and combinations. Jazz is most enjoyable if students also study ballet.

Tap (Ages 6+ by Evaluation) warm-ups to traveling steps and combinations. Jazz is most enjoyable if students also study ballet.

Tap (Ages 6+ by Evaluation) WSD offers a detailed and comprehensive tap curriculum that teaches students how to use the body as a rhythm instrument. Emphasizing footwork and sound, our tap classes help to develop agility, musicality and stylized movement. Each lesson includes all the basic exercises, movements, time steps and razzmatazz, making tap an ideal dance choice. Pupils are encouraged to also study ballet and/or jazz as they make perfect companions to tap. All tap levels are determined on an individual basis according to student's ability, not age.

Musical Theatre (Ages 6+) For everyone who loves to sing, dance and act, WSD offers one of the best musical theatre programs in Canada. Students will learn to develop their performance skills and nurture the unique relationship between performer and audience as they study the choreography of many popular musical productions like Cats, Newsies, Suessical, Annie, Chicago and High School Musical. It is highly recommended students in the Primary and Junior levels enrol in a ballet and/or jazz class to keep up with the dance requirements of the Musical Theatre program, as it is a requirement in Intermediate, Senior and Advanced levels.

Hip Hop (Ages 6+) Stylized and distinct, hip hop is high energy attitude on the dance floor. WSD offers hip hop training to a strong beat, helping to build stamina, improve physical fitness and coordination. With its emphasis on body isolations, freestyle movement and rhythm, hip hop combines today's best music with the movements of the hottest music videos.

Acro (Ages 6+ by Evaluation) A combination of dance and gymnastics, WSD's acro classes target the artistic and controlled use of movement, strength, agility, balance and flexibility. Students will learn the key techniques to execute accurate movements and assure safety. It is highly recommended students in the Primary and Junior levels enrol in a ballet and/or jazz technique class to keep up with the dance requirements of the acro program, as it is a requirement in Intermediate, Senior and Advanced Acro levels.

Contemporary (Ages 10+) For students 10 years and over who are currently registered in or have completed Level 5 dance. Contemporary dance is a name given to a group or mix of Modern 20th century theatre dance styles, thus is not characterized or limited to one specific dance technique per se. The study of movement as it relates to the human body and body/mind inter-relationships will be explored. It is a non-story dance, which means it is open to interpretation. It's fresh, stimulating and risk-taking.

Acro Technique (Ages 11+) Acro Tech focuses on conditioning for dancers looking to increase their flexibility, strength, and balance while refining the fundamentals of acrobatic technique. Each student works at their own pace and within their skill set, to improve on their acrobatic tricks. This class is recommended not only for students currently enrolled in Acro, but students of any discipline who are looking to further their training.

Ballet Technique/Pointe Prep (Ages 10+) This class is designed for students to progress their ballet technique. It is also an excellent pre-requisite for students wishing to pursue pointe work. With a focus on training muscle memory, core stability, ankle strength, weight placement, and alignment, this class blends ballet specific exercises with strength and flexibility training in a progressive manner. It can be difficult for students to isolate and feel which muscles they should be engaging. With the specificity of this training, students gain a greater awareness of their body, will learn to feel each correct muscle group working and is key for injury prevention and rehabilitation.

Please note: Due to the nature and content of all senior level dance classes, a student may be required to spend two years in each level. In order to progress through senior levels, students must be able to meet the minimum technical/dance requirements of the particular class, regardless of their discipline of choice (this incudes acro & musical theatre). 2021/22 FEE SCHEDULE
