It’s about time to protect reporters Surprise passage of a reporters’ shield law by the House of Representatives raised the real possibility that a federal law protecting news people from being forced to reveal sources will be passed this year. And about time that would be. Courts have consistently refused to protect reporters from being ordered to reveal the names of sources in both criminal and civil cases. The journalist then has the choice of going back on a promise – or going to jail for contempt of court. Quite a few have gone to jail over the last 30 years rather than endanger someone who trusted them. So why is this a big deal? Because many important stories might never reach print without judicious use of confidential sources: stories of gov- ernment corruption, organized crime, shoddy consumer prod- ucts, you name it. If the subject is touchy, people don’t want to talk about it, at least not for publication, unless their name can be protected. A source’s job, even their life, could be in danger. Government lawyers might put them on the witness stand, even send them to jail. Take Scouts, add pickup, sprinkle No one particularly likes stories that cite unnamed sources, reporters least of all. Looking Far Into the Future At the start of play, it is usually very difficult to visualize what everyone’s hand will look like with just two or three tricks to go. Nevertheless, there are times when a declarer can foresee a suc- cessful end position. • Patrick Roberts Consider this case where West led the king of spades against five clubs. It did not take long for South to conclude that East was very likely to have the ace of diamonds on the bidding, so that normal play would almost surely result in losing three diamond tricks for down one. Declarer decided that his best chance to avert three diamond losers was to try to develop an endplay against East. So, after ruffing the spade lead, he drew three rounds of trumps, crossed to dummy with a heart, ruffed a spade, played three more rounds of hearts, discarding a diamond, and then ruffed another spade to bring about this po- sition:

Zits • Jim Borgman & Jerry Scott

South now led the three of diamonds, placing West in an untenable position. If he followed with the four, declarer would play dummy’s five and thus assure a diamond trick. And if West instead played the jack on South’s three, the outcome would be the same. Declarer would cover the jack with dummy’s king and East could take the A-Q, but South would then score the last trick with the ten. (c)2014 King Features Syndicate Inc.
