The Sunday Independent was an unusual beast. Owned by mining magnates Lang Hancock and Peter Wright, it first hit the news stands in 1969 and, at times, it posed a realistic threat to the more established Sunday Times. At its peak, it sold about 80,000 papers each weekend and its sports focus made it a favourite of WAFL supporters of the era. It was a sad day when it closed its doors in 1986, just a few years before both the Western Mail and Daily News disappeared forever. What makes the Sunday Independent of interest to WAFL collectors is the set of posters it issued for grand finals. Unfortunately, they show up so rarely that Within 24 hours, club president Vince it’s difficult to work out whether they were Pendal had called to find out whether the issued each year from 1969 through to 1986, barrel might be sold back to the club, offering and whether they released posters for both a generous three-figure sum for its return. grand final teams. Each is worth from $20 to $50, if the recent sale prices are anything to go by. Regular readers might remember the Perth raffle barrel that appeared in this column a few weeks ago after it was purchased for $60 from a collectables shop. Well, it turns out the barrel may not have left Lathlain Park consensually, to put it delicately.

Club: East Perth Age: 27 First year of captaincy at this club: 2013 Previous captaincy experience: East Perth reserves What it means to you to be given the captaincy role: To do it with (Craig Wulff) Wulffy is something I will cherish into my later years. I am really glad I had the opportunity to do it with him. East Perth has allowed me to meet a lot of great people – and I will always be grateful that I was asked to lead the playing group. What makes a good captain: The difference between your best game and your worst game shouldn’t be too far apart. Hardest thing about leading a WAFL team: Paul Johnson continuously pushing for a leadership spill for the captaincy. Best thing about leading a WAFL team: Playing good cop bad cop with co-captain Craig Wulff. Craig always plays the good cop because he likes to be liked. Philosophy/quote you like to live by: If you put in the work the game will slow down for you. When did you start playing football: When I was five years old. Other sports you played as a child: Cricket, mostly basketball. Sports idol: – I also happen to be really good mates with him Ideal 3 dinner guests: Roger Federer, Warren Buffet, Shane Warne. Teammate who would spend the most time looking at Facebook: Freddie Clutterbuck. Loves a Facebook rant. Your Twitter handle: @BrendanLee41. 41 was my old number. I used to be on an AFL list.
