September 2017, SGVR Big Bear-Oak Glen Tour

Enjoy sweeping turns and glorious mountain views. We’ll take Rim of the World Highway (Rt. 18) up to lunch in Big Bear then Rt. 38 down to Oak Glen. Rt. 38 is Southern California’s least known, and probably best driving roads. It’s also the highest.

This had been planned for Saturday, 23 September 2017 which is the day of the Arrowhead Porsche Timeline. Maybe we’ll try Sunday, 17 September 2017 which is Drive Your 356 Day.

San Gabriel Valley Region Calendar for Your Smartphone

The San Gabriel Valley Region calendar also comes in a “Comma Separated Values” (.csv) format and can be imported into Microsoft Outlook and then synchronized to your smartphone. From the Planning Meeting

A number of ideas came up at the planning meeting on Saturday, 5 November 2016, including (but not limited to):

Open Houses--Visits  Tour of Emory Motorsports in North Hollywood, probably in Summer to see—among other things—the 356SL that took Porsche’s 1st class win at Le Mans in 19512  Nethercutt Museum  Norton Simon/Rusnak  Getty Museum/Getty Villa  Griffith Observatory  USS Midway, San Diego  USS Iowa, San Pedro  JPL  Automobile Driving Museum, El Segundo  Porsche Experience Center, Carson

Driving Tours  After Breakfast Meeting Tour to Mt. Baldy (15 April 2017)  Mulholland (Mullin Museum?)  Poppy Fields (Spring)  San Diego  San Juan Capistrano via Ortega Highway  Reagan Library  Santa Paula Airport  Santa Ynez Winery  Taco Truck Tour—probably late Spring of 2017.  A breakfast trip up Angeles Crest Highway to Newcomb’s Ranch instead of Mimi’s (after May 2017)  Big Bear-Oak Glen, probably 23 September 2017

2 This is not just wishful thinking—Rod Emory has offered to host us. We just need to work out the logistics.

sgvr.pca.org 8 of 44 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 9 May 2017

 Overnight Tour to Monterey, possibly 30 September-1 October 2017 to go through Cholame on the anniversary of James Dean’s crash.  Tour of Angeles Crest Highway to Wrightwood—Grizzly Café (date and details TBD—could be after breakfast).

Dinners  Zone 8 Awards Banquet at the Queen Mary, 21 January 2016  Saturday, 11 March 2017: Mission Inn, Riverside  June (41st Anniversary): Progressive Dinner  September: Cal Tech Athenaeum  December: 2017 Holiday Brunch

Dad Wouldn’t Let Ed Justice, Jr. Race, so Jr. Hit the Track with a Camera

From Hagerty.com, by: Aaron McKenzie, 1

Hagerty’s on-line magazine features a profile of San Gabriel Valley Region’s own Ed Justice, Jr.

…In December 1947, a Daytona, Fla., gas station owner named Bill France Sr. assembled a group of racing enthusiasts for a meeting at the Ebony Bar in the local Streamline Hotel. Trying to organize the expanding scene in the postwar southeastern U.S., the men discussed everything from drivers’ payments to a coherent set of rules.

By February, after a series of meetings, the group emerged with a collection of rules, bylaws, and procedures that, in their totality, formed the National Association for Stock Car , “NASCAR.”

Among NASCAR’s founding fathers were the Justice Brothers: Zeke, Gus, and Ed Sr., a trio of Kansas-born, California transplants who had landed in Northern Florida just as the region’s racing scene was transitioning from its bootlegging roots into an organized sport. The brothers brought with them sophisticated backgrounds in racing and aerospace, which used to great acclaim for men like Joel Thorne and Frank Kurtis (of Kurtis-Kraft), helping the Thorne Engineering team win the 1946 Indianapolis 500…

Porsche Driver Narrowly Avoids Car Travelling Wrong Way on A3

From The Sunday Times, Published 04 May 2017, by Will Dron:

A PORSCHE driver captured on video the moment he narrowly avoided a collision with another motorist who was travelling in the wrong direction on the A3.

Twitter user @Dmitry_Lo alerted police by calling 911, which redirects to 999, the emergency services number in the UK, using his in-car Apple CarPlay system. He later posted the video of the incident, which took place on Wednesday, May 3, copying in Surrey Police.

Judging by his Twitter profile picture (left), the incredibly calm and collected Mr. Lo might just gave some track experience.

Porsche 911 GT3 Sets a New Best Time at the Nürburgring Nordschleife

The new Porsche 911 GT3 has celebrated its first day on the Nürburgring with a lap time of 7 minutes, 12.7 seconds for the legendary Nordschleife. The 991.2 GT3, beat the time set by the previous model by 12.3 seconds. www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvSAPVwHvIY

7 minutes, 12.7 seconds: The 911 GT3 sets a new best time Porsche Press Release 4 May 2017

The new Porsche 911 GT3 has celebrated its first day on the Nürburgring with a lap time of 7 minutes, 12.7 seconds for the legendary Nordschleife. The road-approved 911, with specifications similar to its motorsport counterpart, beat the time set by the previous model by 12.3 seconds.

“By achieving this time, we have emphatically proven that the new 911 GT3 not only provides the best driving experience, but can also deliver an impressive performance on the Nordschleife. The focus was on optimising the driving quality and adapting to the slight increase in engine power”, says a delighted Frank-Steffen Walliser, Vice President Motorsport and GT cars at Porsche. “A few years ago, lap times like this could only ever be achieved by thoroughbred racing cars with slick tyres”, adds Andreas Preuninger, Director GT Product Line. “The new GT3 can now achieve this with comparatively modest power, but is still fully suited to everyday use.”

The 911 GT3 also relies more on pure racing technology than the previous model. Its 368-kW (500-hp; 911 GT3: Fuel consumption combined 12.7–12.9 l/100 km; CO2 emissions 288–290 g/km), high-rev, naturally aspirated engine can also be found in the 911 GT3 Cup racing car. Equipped with rear-axle steering, a seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) and Michelin Sport Cup 2 N1 tyres, the sports

At an air temperature of 8 degrees and an asphalt temperature of 14 degrees, the conditions for Porsche test driver Lars Kern were ideal for racing. The road-approved rear-wheel drive Coupé recorded its best time under notarial supervision. “If you can drive fast on the Nordschleife, you can drive fast anywhere in the world”, Frank-Steffen Walliser comments.

The Inside Track, by Phil Hill available in June 2017

Phil Hill (1927-2008) was ’s 1961 Formula 1 World Champion Driver – and the first, and to date only, American-born sportsman to win world-class motor racing’s premier road racing title. He was also three-time winner of both the Le Mans 24-Hour and the Sebring 12-Hour races, twice-winner of the Buenos Aires and Nürburgring 1000Kms classics, and twice-winner of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.

Through all his racing up to 1962 – when he saw his friend and protégé Dan Gurney win the French Grand Prix at Rouen-les-Essarts – Phil Hill used his favoured Leica cameras “… to show the folks back home” the motor racing scene he so loved in fantastic quality colour. Built around this very personal and

Complete with Phil’s first-person autobiographical text and highly anecdotal captions, ‘Inside Track’ is set to become a true publishing sensation, the standard by which all future World Champion Drivers’ books will be measured. Buy it (for a lot of money) at phil-hill-book.com

WEC Six Hours of Spa-Francorchamps

The second round of the 2017 World Endurance Championship (WEC), the Six Hours of Spa-Francorchamps took place on Saturday, 6 May 2017.

The Porsche 919 Hybrids both ran with low-drag “Le Mans” aerokits while two of the Toyotas used high-downforce aerokits. A third Toyota ran a low-drag “Le Mans” aerokit and finished way back.

34 of 44 San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 9 May 2017

Clearly, the low-drag Porsches were nearly the equal of the high-downforce Toyotas at Spa. It begs the question as to how Le Mans will go. We can hope the low-drag Porsches will continue their he advantage when all the Toyotas run in low-drag configuration.
